28/04/2017 - Finished work for the weekend so spent an hour just fixing two issues.
Fixed clipping/people floating issue.
Fixed placement bug.
Left original submissions in case people want to check those :D
25/04/2017 - WebGL version now available. I only submitted the windows version on submission day. Provide WebGL (tested) and Linux,Mac (untested) over at itch.io
Special thanks for @MrJoshuaMcLean for creating such a beautiful bit of music. Especially as my relevant input on it was pretty much please make me 'happy space music'.
A vastly different game to the original idea. Unfortunately due to some real life issues I lost a good chunk of time. Also a particular Vector2 masquerading within a bunch of Vector3.Distance calls left me banging my head against a wall for a long time....Lessons learned.
I set out to make a warlike tribe v tribe but due to time limits I swerved madly in another direction. Limited, but I've really enjoyed working on this Ludum Dare! I've also learned a lot.
I hope you enjoy this submission. I will defo be updating it in the future.
Also I'm aware they float..it was a cheap last minute hack to get around a clipping issue that threw them into space and then they bounce around the planet. :D
Instructions
Please note the little people will learn the map as they explore, as at first they only see around their first building
Mostly all information is provided on the UI.
Clicking P or S (or pushing keys P or S) will put you in sculpt or place mode. Left clicking in sculpt mode will raise land Right clicking in sculpt mode will lower land.
Left clicking in place mode will place the tribe (can only do once unless reset) Right click in place mode will plonk down a tree.
Placing people in water will cause them to go nuts.
mouse scroll zooms in camera. Arrow keys rotate camera. Backspace resets world. Escape - Quits.
Please note, the 'models' I made are the tree, and the boat and square sphere. The actual good models were unfortunately quick asset uses (little man and house) as I just wanted to replace the cube at the last minute. Future updates (after judging) I'll replace the model with my own.

I am a bad person.
I like the idea very much, and I'd love to see a further version with more variety. It's one of those games that relaxes the player :)
Would be awesome to see a post jam version with other resources like fruit tress, fish spawners, gold and stuff.
But this in 48 hs is impressive, keep it up!
Defo planning to add to it in my spare time :D
@Frodewin "How do the people learn the map?" - As they explore, any new nodes that are neighbours of the node they are on/in are added to a 'tribe brain'. Basically if one person sees it then it updates the tribe so they all see it. This isn't shared between tribes but in the jam there is only one tribe implemented at present. So basically over time they will want to explore new nodes.
The world as we know it: :mountain::ocean::house::man:
As it stands, it's like a neat sandbox tech-demo. I can see this becoming a game if there are some kind of objectives and you have to interact indirectly with the tribe(s) in order to achieve them. Or it can be just a sandbox, with more interactions and unpredictable stuff happening, that can be fun too.
It looks ok(3d models look really good, the terrain not so much), sounds good, I had fun interacting with it for about 15 minutes.
Good luck on the competition and, if you're going to expand on this game, good luck on that too.
@xmatos Alas the 3d models you were most likely talking about were the person and the house which were quick free asset additions to replace person cube and brown house cube :P I did make the tree and boat lol. A lot of the stuff is in the backend, I'm only just learning 3d modelling so I hope to use this as a good place to create my own models and see how that all works. I will defo be adding my own once judging has finished and I can upload the changes I've made.
Thanks!
I actually think your trees are pretty nice assets, but the world generation could use a fair few more polygons, so it matches the rough polycount/ detailsize of the houses and trees plus a bit more work into the lighting and materials could make this really appealing with little effort.
Also quaternions are tricky to work with, there are some issues when the camera works itself to the poles of the planet.
Nice entry!
cheers~
However I'm also a sucker for that kind of low poly graphics, so believe me when I tell you, I like those trees. lol
This is crazy impressive for just 72 hours! It's a nice original idea, well executed. Did you do the music too?
Hi @simonhutchinson! Thank you for the kind words. The music was provided by the awesome <twitter> @MrJoshuaMcLean. It actually helped a lot, as my original idea became increasingly difficult to get to due to time loss. His piece of music provided the creative juice that helped me go in another direction, and feel less defeated. Check out his soundcloud at https://soundcloud.com/joshuamclean17/ if you like his stuff. He's got some awesome tunes on there and I think he did a lot of music for different games during Ludum dare! So defo someone you should keep an eye on. :D
Controls felt a bit awkward to me at first. Sometimes I'd try to place a tree and wouldn't know why it didn't place. I'd definitely have switched mouse buttons for trees and villages. 3D models were perfect, really cute little villagers. Some more detailed textures could definitely have existed though. If the shadows were a little lighter that'd be nice.
Music was ok, quite atmospheric. Probably could have used a little light rhythm. No sound effects unfortunately. Didn't see any serious bugs; the people had interesting AI. I understand timeframes in this competition are tight and that can make it tough to finish those things you really want to add, but even a simple mechanic like - adding a consequence if people run out of wood or something - that would add a ton to the game.
It's a great idea anyway and a bit of a shame we didn't see more to it! But awesome effort anyway :)
I won't go into details about the features that I wish were there because they are not original and you probably didn't do them because of the lack of time. The only really annoying thing is the way the globe sometimes rotates suddenly 180° when I am pressing an arrow for some time.
And the sad thing is that once you built the world there is not much thing to do. You can't even drown the little people, they just turn into boats ! ;)
If it is a simply contemplative game a good thing would be to materialize the exploration more clearly. Here it just look like they turn into boats and run randomly, looking for trees. Still nice to look, especially with the nice relaxing music.
Well done!
Really enjoyed looking at my tiny people running around for a while, obviusly missing some kind of later "objective" or something, but nice nonetheless!
The "happy space music" is indeed quite nice.
There seems to be a problem with the camera if you want to rotate over the north / south pole.
I found a problem, you can zoom in the camera too much until it goes through the floor. Set a maximun zoom could be a good idea to avoid this.

* 'WASD' to move the planet (it was a bit uncomfortable to reach the arrows and use the mouse.)
* Hold to place/sculpt.
These aren't major things, but they pulled me out of the experience a little bit, which isn't ideal for an atmospheric game such as this.
Overall I'd say that this is a cool concept. It was fun to watch the tribe grow. Nice work!
" You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus." Agent Smith
If think about it - you could add tons of interesting features to it.
Like f.e when you surround a small piece of water with land it becomes lake and water is required for buildings to be created.
Great job.
I did a little video with my thoughts.
