LIFEBLASTER by gwinnell
INTRODUCING "Lifeblaster"!
The brand new '3000' model of your favourite resurrection, exorcism and health-sharing multi-tool.
- Move: WASD
- Shoot lifeforce: Left click
- Fullscreen: F
- Mute: M
Found some zombies or undead? Give them a blast and send them straight up to heaven. Watch out though, this new design saps your own health power in exchange, so don't get too trigger happy! (Subject to warranty period. We don't mind either way - we'll make more sales with more dead things running around.)
Hint: you can pickup and re-use life/health/ammo shots once they hit a target. Your life is currency.

Tools:
- Custom C++ game engine
- Photoshop
- Reaper
Post-mortem?:
- Concentrated lots on the movement/game feel - what do you think?
- Unfortunately it's just one room - I didn't get enough time to implement proper 3d collisions to enable walls/corridors/etc!
- For my first ever project and game jam with 3 dimensions, I'm very happy!
Post-compo changes:
- Fix fullscreen mode WebGL.
- Reduced player slipperiness.
- Reduced mouse sensitivity by 30%.
- Added controller support.
- Added reason for dying on the game over screen.
- Added mini-map.

* My previous Ludum Dare entries have been the same engine, but this is the first 3d game in it. Believe me, I spent way too long just getting the sprites to face the player/camera! ... and getting the 2d ortho overlay to switch correctly... and... well the list goes on!
* Sorry about the mouse sensitivity! I developed everything with laptop/trackpad. I'll see if I can research what values are more 'standard' in the post-ld version. Rotate is still available on arrow keys from debug but that's not helpful if shoot is still on mouse.
* I would have loved to indicate enemy 'closeness' better. I guess turning around a lot with that high sensitivity mouse would work as a strategy. Otherwise there's a sound that plays on enemy spawn, but again it's not 3d sound so not the best. Maybe the enemy getting close to you, stopping, and then 'punching' on a delay would have worked better than simple, immediate x/z circle collisions. With experience gained and engine features from this entry, I'll have more time for gameplay next time!
* The macOS version stretches to the fullscreen, that's a bug with my Emscripten export. I will fix as soon as I can.
I could only suggest lowering the sensitivity or having an option for a slider but apart from that its a very well done game!
I love how the characters kinda slip like in iceskating, makes the game even more skillfull to play.
The sound is tip top.
Great submission
Graphics and sound are a great composition in my eyes, and the collection aspect adds a lot to the classic shooter style!
Also, your own engine? That's cool.
However I don't really feel the theme in your game, it just seems like a normal shooting game, is there something I missed ?
btw I really enjoyed the music and the pixel style !
@gaming-night Ahh, I'm going to patch in controller support soon if that's any good?
Things I liked:
* A well executed 3D game with cool billboarded 2d elements! It reminded me of Doom!
* The high-tempo music was awesome and was an excellent fit for the gameplay.
* The minimal art style was great, the particles bouncing on the floor looked neat, and I liked the color palette you chose.
Thengs I would have changed:
* The player controls felt very "slidey" like I was running around on ice. It made it hard to play when it got harder.
* The shooting enemy hit really hard and killed me a bunch.
* Using health as ammo was a bit of a boring way to incorporate the theme.
Great job!
@klianc09 Thanks! Yeah, the red 'bullets' turn into health too, I kept that in intentionally so you could recover being hit from enemies. I should probably have capped that player health value though!
Loved the theme interpretation, the art and the feel/ overall mood, it was a little weird that the camera rotates only horizontally haha.
Keep that cool programming going!!! Cheers!
