LegDos by ChaosTheLegend

[raw]
made by ChaosTheLegend for LD 42 (JAM)

For LD42 I've made a small game about all difficulties windows user encounters. Annoying messages, crappy design and Worst of all: Running out of Disk space. You can say: "Dude, I've seen dozens games like this", NO you haven't, only in this game you can kill yourself because your hamster died. Also, I've added references to other LD games and if you've sent me title of your game, you should see it. Have fun and try to NOT RAN OUT OF SPACE!

I'll add LD winners into the game and upload a new version with them!

And here's some information I should've mentioned in the tutorial: (I may add this information into actual game later) 1. Your income is calculated depending on how many programs do you have (in work folder) 2. Your happiness is calculated depending on how many games you have (in games folder) 3. Messages are effecting your parameters (for example, getting a message "New boss! and he likes you..." will boost your working performance or getting "Update! some games have updated!" will make you happier faster when you play games) 4. You can pause the game by pressing escape.

Sorry for misunderstanding, I hope now you'll be able to play comfortably.

I think that's all, if you have other questions, send me them.

Here's some screenshots: Scr1.png Scr2.png Scr3.png

Fixed bugs: 1. Resolution bug (when the game runs in the wrong aspect ratio) 2. Wrong file display bug 3. Game breaking wrong multiplier bug (game becomes unbeatable if you games or programs outdated too many times) 4. (Web) wrong scene transition bug 5. (Web) exit button appears on end screen 6. Misspells, a lot of misspells

The idea of the game was pretty nice. But in my case, I didn't have to manage the space in the disk at all. I entered the games folder and didn't know how to exit, and for the rest of the playtime all I needed to do was pick between work and play games. It's ok, these kinds of games were resource management is involved are kind of hard to balance and in three days you just don't have enough room for playtesting. Also the popup notifications were often on top of that button and it was kinda of annoying.

The program names were pretty funny though. And by the way, the Linux build works just fine, thanks for porting the game to our OS.

It was a fun game idea, but on my first play through I got quite a few viruses in a row, and as such couldn't install and new games or software.

At least until I upgraded to a 20GB hard drive for $700, then ran out of money.

Fun game, 8/10 would use LegCord again.

I love the program names! I didn't really see the importance of the "running out of disk space" mechanic though; if I don't buy any new programs, I don't use any more disk space.Does buying more programs cause me to be able to work better or something? I eventually bought some anyway and then forgot how small my disk was so I lost, lol.

I think this game needed a bit more playtesting as I think some of the mechanics are overshadowed by others. I decided to buy a game which took up a lot of my hard drive. Ok, I bought the game, I'm not too sure what advantage it gives me but cool. Let me work a bit so I can get money and up my hard drive storage. I never seemed to gain money? I would get a good amount and then taxes would swoop in to bite me in the ass. So the whole experience felt... slow? My first LD game was actually a resource management game as well (a poor one at that) so I know it's difficult to balance these games in the time given, so if you want to keep working on your game I say first things first work on the balance and explaining the mechanics in a bit more detail.

This game does have quite a lot of charm though, with the spin-off names actual LD Jam games (my game is actually called DOS as well which I thought was pretty funny) and a familiar interface if the core
mechanics are worked on a bit this could potentially be really fun.

I don't think this game was balanced enough, unfortunately. I spent a lot of time just waiting around, and even though there were many humorous things on this, I got bored pretty easy. I like the graphical style and sounds though they have achieved good ratings for me!

Oh boy, that was fun.

The app names and the references on other ludum dare games was a nice twist.

Good job!

Worth playing for the work program names alone! The refereneces to other games was also a cool thing to do. I'm a fan of these make some decisions then sit back and see how your stats change style games. There is probably a catchier name for that lol

@chaosthelegend it was the 1152x864 resolution, on full screen. It's not a bug that interrupts gameplay, so I don't know if you'ree allowed to fix it during voting time, but you can make separate builds.

@jegus9 I think I fixed it in the new version, now the game can only be played in 16:9 aspect ration, so bugs like this shouldn't be happening

Game was cute for what it was. The game names were funny and I liked the references to popular software. Sometimes the notification popups were hidden because I was on another screen, and I had to click all the programs to see their costs. I think with a UI update to make it quicker to move around and some balancing this game could be a fun distraction. I wasn't really sure what I was working towards, and that made my investment dwindle.

I thought the music was a great loop and set the theme nicely.

I would have liked an option to speed up the game (something I wish more idle games had) so I could do more interactive things, like upgrade my hard drive, without waiting for a super long time. More interactivity in general would be good. But there's a ton of icons and programs in here, and I enjoyed the concept.

Also, FL Studio isn't that cheap. ;)

I really enjoyed the game, it feels like a cookie clicker but there is actually a depth to it that I really like, plus you dont really have to click as much. Sometimes the random events popping up are quite annoying, especially when I was about to get enough money for an upgrade and then there goes the electricity.. It feels a little bit unfair, but I guess it's a part of the game  . The humor was a nice touch, getting younity was one of the first thing I do after getting an upgrade LOL. Great entry, well done!
