There is a tutorial in the game for keyboard controls. You can also use a gamepad. Here are the controls for an xbox controller:

Inspiration

When I saw the theme, I knew I wanted to make something about ethical choices involving the weighing of lives. In particular, I wanted to make a game that presented the player with a choice between the lives of strangers and the lives of their loved ones. Ultimately, the strangers are going to die, there is nothing the player can do about that. So, is it morally permissible for the executioner to kill the strangers, given that not doing so will result in the deaths of his family?

I intend to use the game when I teach students about theories of consequentialism next semester.

Wasn't sure what was supposed to happen after killing someone/dumping the body - it mentioned one sacrifice a day, but I couldn't even tell if time was passing (it still seemed to be day 1 by the time I got bored).

I ran into a bug on the 4th day or so where it wouldn't let me clear the table. Really cool mood and theme, but I never really understood what the end goal would be.

This seems like a good idea, with an interesting topic, clearly on theme. I would have liked to see more of the story, but after 15 days it got a bit too repetitive for me. It didn't seem to matter whether I sacrificed the right prisoner or not.

In a way, it reminded me of Papers, Please. But there weren't enough levers for me to change the outcome. The only two things I could find to do were sacrificing people, or stabbing the guards.

Graphics were pretty good, and fairly consistent though the blood effect seemed out of place. A few small glitches here and there (esp around the lever). Music was good, and thematic, but a bit repetitive.

@mcovert Perhaps I didn't make it clear enough. I was hoping people would think to walk up to the guard next to the prison cell, since there is a "door" looking thing behind him. He decides whether or not you are done with your work for the day.

@move127 Nice theme, nice idea, easy to understand (except the door but not that hard to figure out). But a bit repetive, we want to see more and riot in the jail :p

Nice ambiance! I spent some time stabbing people in this game! It felt so good! :smiling_imp:

What I liked most was the graphics and the controls which r easy to understand and to use.

Maybe u could improve the SFX including some screaming and begging noises. Btw, the stabbing sound is nice!

Got a little bored after day 15. Thought it would have been better to end it after the sacrifice of your family. Strong theming and message here but felt it was just going through the motions, and would've preferred some story element to shake up the gameplay. The graphics and SFX was spot on though and really reinforced the chilling mood.

Things that I liked:
+ Nice pixelart
+ Great idea of moral choices and take on the theme
+ Pop up tips for controls and actions which should be done
+ Ability to kill guards even if leads to gameover

What might be added:
+ Exit sign or something behind that guard
+ Narrative of some sort or telling the consequences of decisions that I have made would be nice
+ Ability to kill myself

Bugs/feature being noticed:
By stabbing 'R' the same victim repeatedly I can push up the score endlessly as well as my personal satisfaction from what I'm doing. 🗡

Have deep my respect for being compo!

P.S. Just jealous of your students: wish my teachers had make games for me to teach me something.

This was pretty fun! Not sure if there was an end to it, but it was definitely very interesting. The retro graphics and audio were really nice! I loved the dialogue between the cultists throughout the game. Also, I feel like the use of the theme was a little more effective than a lot of other games I've played, so good job on that! Overall, this was really good! It could be awesome to have a larger version of this with a few more features. :)
