Insect Attack by SimplePotential
I totally trashed my idea for the card game I was working on and instead bring you this very crappy shooter! Aren't you excited? Other than the time limit, this entry would have qualified for the Compo but between life butting in and my other idea falling short, I had limited options.
I'm sure there are more than a few bugs. About 6 hours of work is all I put into this.
Tools: * Unity 3D * Bfrx for the lovely sound effects * Paint.Net for the even more lovely graphics
Your player is a bug spray can in the center of the screen, right clicking fires the sprayer once per click. Aim with your mouse in the direction you want to fire.
Shooting bugs (ants actually, never got a chance to implement anything else) increases your time limit and your score. Missing with a puff of spray completely removes 1 second from your timer. Bugs hitting you remove score as well as seconds from your timer.
Word of warning, bug spawning can literally occur anywhere within the camera's view, including right next to the player. If it immediately collides it just destroys the bug with no penalty but sometimes they'll be so close that you can't hit them.
If I have time over the next couple days I'll try to work out bugs but work will take up a lot of my time this week and not to mention I awoke this morning to some sort of crud.

Known Bug on Game Over screen, bottom left label should save "High Score"

Other Known Bugs:
Sometimes a bullet/spray puff will get stuck on the screen. It'll destroy itself after 5 seconds. Cause? Not really sure. They can only collide with bugs and should destroy immediately after hitting but my best guess is there is an occasion where that doesn't occur correctly and a bug spawns right at the location where the bullet is at creating some sort of conflict.
Bugs spawn completely randomly anywhere within the camera view. This should be changed to spawn either at the camera edges, just beyond the edge, or perhaps within a radius at certain points on the screen.
Planned Features:
More bugs. Bees are on the list. Perhaps a roach as well.
Weapons. A bug bomb is on the list. Also want to add some sort of cooldown to the current sprayer or a limited number of shots within a given time frame. Basically need to balance the game still.

But I know how it can be when you have to scrap your project and start something new from scratch, and this game's pretty impressive for six hours' work! Congratulations on finish a game for Ludum Dare!
It's not bad for a last minute creation. I was surprised when it went from one ant to suddenly like 20. Making use of the time as health was also a creative way to make variable scores.
But seeing the graphics and animations, rather simple but pretty effective, I think you did a good job if you managed to produce something that decent in only 6 hours, So RIP your card game and well done on this one !
If you want to make a better post jam game, you definitely need to create a safe zone around the spray can, where no bug can spawn. Also I would advise you to change the background from this monotonous dotted landscape to something more varied like a picnic table or something. As for the spawning of the bugs you could draw a growing shadow just before they spawn, so it would look like they are falling. And you should change the speed of the ants to be a random value, so it would make the game less predictable.
Also I think a some kind of leaderboards could help to make people play your game more!
Anyways nice game my best score was 6750!
It would be awesome to add more insects and add ones that increase the timer by more. The spawns are a bit much especially at the beginning (I had this problem with my game). I would of like to have seen the bugs broken down into waves. It would be nice to ease into the difficulty. You should add different power ups and stuff. If you add a little bit more music and stuff you could slap this on android or iOS!
Sorry about your card game, but congrats on making a game in 6 hours! :)
Hey now...this game *is* a major bug infestation. XD
I like the idea of linking the life to time, and shooting bugs gives more time. I didn't really think it was smooth enough to incorporate penalties such as taking away time for missing a bug. If you're going to do that, I would suggest starting with some bugs with bigger hitboxes, and then gradually adding in bugs with smaller hitboxes to make it harder. And I guess there's nothing wrong with using the right mouse button to shoot, but it's just like, *why*? Well I think maybe Mac users might have trouble. Also, the bugs spawning not on the outsides of the screen was quite irritating, but most of the time, I couldn't really tell what was going on.
Overall, it was an all right idea. It did feel a little rushed, but I can see that you were scrapped for time in this. At the very least, you have something playable, with sound effects to boot.
I think with some improvements (if you had more time), this could be an amazing game! With some music, a few more bug types, and maybe other weapon types, it could be really cool. Good Job!
Also, I wish there was a limit to the speed you could shoot (and then you could lower the ant spawn rate). This would make the game feel like it requires more skill.
The screen was kinda barren and with the ants just popping in it kinda ruined the immersion but that doesn't make it a bad game. The mechanics were solid and it had a goal and an ending with a saved high score no less. This was a good job for only 6 hours.
Your art is great and at first I didn't realize the ants didn't have a walking animation. It was only after a few playthroughs that I realized this. So it really didn't hurt the game in my opinion. Yeah I have to say I really liked the game. With some polish and balancing you'd have something really cool on your hands.
@kunonooni - Regarding the sound cutting off, you are absolutely correct. I have a single sound manager for the whole game with a single source. Usually I do this sort of thing with a sound manager but with each individual object having it's own audio source so that they can all play at the same time. It was a last minute addition though as I know sound is one of those things I count off for when playing a game if it doesn't have any.
@EveryoneElse - Thanks You!
Good try, but seems not finished. Understandable knowing that u have only 6 hours of work.
