Kenny Cockroach by bigsoutherly

[raw]
made by bigsoutherly for LD 38 (COMPO)

Kenny Cockroach claims to be a pretty good bloke. Life just ain't easy living on scraps near the bottom of the food chain.

It's been a big day and Kenny needs some help to get back to his roach hotel, so he can see the missus and catch a bit of shut eye. Along the way, he just needs to be wary of the neighborhood spiders; they are hungry and looking for an easy feed.

You can help Kenny Cockroach find his way home online here or find more about what is happening with Kenny at his ludum dare game page.

If your more technically inclined, the code base for Kenny Cockroach is on github. Feel free to build and expand Kenny's world as you see fit!

NOTE: Since the release some people have gotten a bit confused, with Kennys goal of seeking out a Roach Motel aka Cockroach Trap. All I can say is these people have obviously never lived with a German cockroach infestation. They dont mind traps in the slightest and even seem to seek them out!

Very hard game! Well, the first level. Then I reached fast till the 5th level, were I saw killed my a creepy venom spiting spider! Jokes aside, the game is cool, but very hard to play, as the spiders are huge, leaving no space to dodge the venom balls. And the spit sound was a little loud. Nice that the cockroach and spiders had animation while moving. Keep it cool, and clean ;)

Thanks for the feedback @nicro, i would have loved more time to balance the difficulty. Unfortunately the spider AI ended up being a bit of a time sink and I wasn't able to improve the flow as a whole.

This is so hard! It'd be nice if I could walk on a diagonal.

@cosine I had originally intended the player to be able to turn to any arbitrary rotation unfortunately it caused some issues and i couldn't get them all ironed out in the time frame so I cut it back to just the 4 directions.

I love the graphics! The first to times I started, I spawned right on top of a spider. Are the levels generated?

@jelch Yes the levels are procedurally generated so it will be different each time around. Could have polished the game a bit more if they were predefined but I really wanted to experiment with dungeon generation.

Nice entry, was quite fun to play, and a little stressing trying to avoid the large insects.

Nice entry! I like that you cant attack back, and the procedural levels are cool. The main game mechanic is exploring the level and finding the exit, maybe you could have expanded this mechanic a bit more by throwing around powerups around the levels so you are rewarded for exploring everything? I didnt notice any ~~bugs~~ glitches, only sometimes you spawn next to the goal and sometimes you get spawn killed. Anyways, congrats on making a cool game!

I like that the levels are procedurally generated. However the generation procedure seems not very well-constrained as sometimes it could be super hard while sometimes the destination is right next to the where you start with. One thing that makes it too hard is the lack of a general idea of where the goal is. Adding an arrow pointing to the direction where the goal is would help.

I like the randomly generated levels! Nice job!
A couple times right when I spawned, I immediately died though
