Don't Go Flat by wh05herlock

made by wh05herlock for LD 39 (COMPO)

ld39.png

You are a robot.

WASD To Move. Point + Click to Fire.

You can't fire behind you.

Everything you do will drain your energy (even firing your own laser).

Getting hit by an enemy laser will drain your energy.

You are faster and have slightly longer range than your enemies.

Destroying enemy robots will cause them to drop batteries which you can pick up to replenish your energy.

To win, either collect 10 solar panel parts, which will give you constant energy regeneration, or destroy all enemies.

If your battery goes flat you die.

Good Luck, and don't go flat!

Made with Unity 5.6.0f3 Personal Edition, MonoDevelop 5.9.6, Gimp 2.8.18, and Audacity 2.1.3.

Hint: The minimap is very useful :).

Please let me know if there are any typos etc. in the game. I was in a massive hurry to finish at the end. Thanks :)

EDIT: Hey everyone. I recently made a newer version of the game, with the addition of an options menu, where you can change the camera rotation to be fixed in place if you want.

In the options menu you can also edit many variables in the game which affect difficulty etc. (e.g. you can make the robots do less damage).

This means you can change the difficulty however you like, and also fiddle with the options to the point of completely changing the strategy. (e.g. one change I like to play with is to make the robots turn really slowly, but have longer range than the player, and do more damage, so that you have to sneak up behind them to kill them).

You can also change the map generation e.g. I think the map looks a lot better with wall density set to 2, and wall size set to something small like 3.

You can access the new version here with this link: https://w05herlock.itch.io/ld-39-post and if you don't change any of the settings in the options menu it will still play almost exactly the same as the competition version.

Nice work! The game moves really smoothly and I like that the camera rotates with you. The mini map is super useful and looks great too.

I needed to get used to the camera, but it's kind of nauseous and needs tweaking. Overall, it's a pleasant, simple game.

This game seemed impossibly difficult at first but once I got the hang of kiting the enemy robots and shooting them while backing up it felt a lot more fun, though I still wasn't able to pull off a victory. I really liked the mechanic where you could kill the enemies but generally not recover enough power to have made it worthwhile

Fun game! Disorienting, but fun! haha My only problem was I couldn't really tell if I was shooting sometimes. The lasers should have a visible pathway somehow, in my opinion. Still enjoyed though! :)

@modalmodule The lasers should be visible. There should be lines appearing when you shoot them. What platform did you play the game on?

Btw, thanks for the awesome feedback everyone! :)

Really nice design balancing the need to kite enemies and keep distance vs. minimizing distance to the next battery pickup. But I also found it quite hard as well; perhaps stages of increasing difficulty would be helpful.

Interesting game, although very hard!

The graphics were clear enough to see what was going on, and the minimap was very useful!

Having to collect 10 solar panels was perhaps a bit much, considering how fast your power drains. A suggestion could be to lower that number a bit. Then it would be a viable strategy to try to avoid the enemies, instead of having to fight them for energy. I think I hit a bug as well: When I collected solar panels, and then died, the next time I respawned, I got the "victory" message (and restart-button).

The explosion animation was a nice touch :-)

>I must find panels,
>before my power runs out!
>Bzz! Destroyed by bots!

I liked this. The camera rotation was confusing because of the minimap being fixed, but was still found it fun moving around.

The fact that the maps are randomly generated makes this game unique !

Good controls and really like the addition of a minimap. The graphics and audio were clean and did their job well. I found the enemies a bit too hard to kill, would have preferred if they took fewer shots. The death animation was also a bit long. Still, great work!

This game was nice. I liked everything in it only one thing that made my head turning, the camera rotation ! It was really bad that the camera was tracking the position and the rotation of the player. You should make it only follows the position of the player, and this by using a standard asset script or by watching some tutorials like this one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFQhpwc6cKE Good game at overall !

The game was pretty cool and pretty enjoyable for such a simple game. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the camera, but it's interesting. Kill the enemies was kinda hard. But I played on a touchpad making aiming a bit harder. Overall pretty enjoyable!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! :)

I made a new version of the game recently trying to incorporate all the feedback I got from you.

The main change is that it has an options menu, which lets you play without the camera rotating with you when you turn.

The options menu also lets you change the difficulty by changing the amount of damage enemies do etc.

The other change is that the new version lets you restart without having to watch the animation of you exploding, because it's a bit annoying having to wait for it to finish before you can restart.

If you want to play it you can play it here: https://wh05herlock.000webhostapp.com/ld39-post/index.html.

Thanks :)
