ZOMBIE FOOD : A game by Ned Boulter made in 72 hours

Info and Instructions:

You are a gunslinger in a zombie apocalypse. You've realised that the zombies won't attack you if you give them brains.

Kill the other humans with guns, collect their brains (by walking over their bodies) and give them to the zombies, (just stand near a zombie).

A human is the lighter color entity, with the red top, a zombie is darker, and has a green top.

If you shoot a zombie accidentally, that zombie will attack you, and the zombie happiness will go down, if a zombie is shot by a human, zombie happiness will also go down (so keep them out of the crossfire).

If zombie happiness runs out, your only chance of survival is to get to the next wave very quickly.

You go to the next wave when all hostile humans are dead.

Controls

WASD to move player, and aim. Move mouse (when mouse is locked) to move camera (click on game to lock mouse). left click to shoot.

(you can also use space and arrow keys if you don't have a mouse)

Intro:

This game was made originally for the compo, but I didn't have time, so I switched to the Jam, all of the art, sound, and code is drawn/modelled/written by me within the 72 hours. It's made in C++ using OpenGL, Win32 and XAudio2 mainly, I didn't have time to write any base code, so every line in the project is written within the 72 hours.

Theme

The gunslingers view, is that he is trading other people's lives, so he can stay alive (hence life is currency, or... something...)

To setup project

If you want to run the code, download visual studio 2017, open the project. Right click on the solution and retarget it to whatever windows sdk you are using (click retarget solution). Right click on the solution and click on rescan solution. I am aware that code to do with zombie happiness and enemy AI is kinda bad, it was all done in about the last 3 hours.

Tips (if you want to get to wave 10 or above)

Shoot humans who are far-ish away, as they are easier to hit (because while you are moving forward you can adjust aim with mouse)

Don't stand behind a zombie when a human is shooting at you (don't let zombies be between you and humans as then humans will shoot them, and that will lower zombie happiness significantly).

Zombie happiness will not refill in a new wave, unless it is empty. If you are very low, let it empty before quickly moving to next wave (before the zombies kill you).

If you shoot a zombie accidentally, keep moving away from him, and he should lose interest.

If feeding zombies, stand near groups, as you will feed multiple simultaneously, filling the happiness bar much quicker.

Use trees as cover.

Interesting concept, liked the constant need to apease the zombies and worry about the humans at the time, also the fact that it's worst to attack the zombie. but the lack of a aim made me nearly miss a bit too much as well as having problems even to get them very close, the lack of movement in the main character also pulled down likeability to me.
But the game itself is pretty fun and the creativity in the concept was fun.

nice job!
the aiming of your game needs some rework cause its really really hard, but overall good job.
I will give you that 5 Stars in the graphics for that tiny file size! Very nice

@dark1knight yea, the aiming system was kind of an experiment. Normally aim lines up with the mouse in some way, I wanted to see what would happen if I had top-down shooter style aim in a third person game.

I do agree with you fully though, I didn't particularly like the result either, it's very annoying when enemies are too close. Glad you had fun :D

Good concept, even if at the beginning I try to kill everything by shooting everywhere: p

Well done!
the graphics and sounds are good, but it's somewhat hard to aim.
Also, sometimes when there are two zombies nearly, when i kill one, both die

Well done, I too found the aiming a bit hard. If the aiming was a bit easier than I probably could've completed much more levels/waves. Well done on the graphics!
