Piggy bank by Papaver

[raw]
made by Papaver for LD 44 (JAM)

Description

As a piggy bank, your life is all about money. You need money to get higher up. You also need money to extend your life, so choose wisely as you climb!

How high can you get? Please let us know your highscores. Comments are very welcome. :)

Goal

Try to get as high as possible!

Controls

  • Arrow keys: move around
  • Space bar: collect a coin you are standing on to increase your health
  • R: retry
  • P: pause
  • M: mute audio

Hints

  • You can see your health in the two side bars.
  • Collecting coins will increase your health, but you might lose some altitude.
  • Your health drops quicker and quicker, so climb as quickly as possible.
  • There are some small platforms on the sides for you to rest on while you wait for more coins to fall.
  • The direction of your jump depends on your position on a coin.
  • Not all coins are created equal.
Issues

Audio might not load the first time... Working on it! You could refresh, and then you might hear some music. (And you can use M to mute it :stuckouttongue: )

Aaaah I'm so bad at this game – but, to be honest, I really enjoyed being bad at it :D It took me a while to get used to the controls but once I did, I had fun. I would love to see how other players did in this game and how far they went but even having my own high score on the screen is a nice touch :) Thank you for this game!

Awesome! I love the mechanic. Especially the transitions between coins next to each other. I would maybe add some coins that are collectible without jumping on them and "consuming" them, as collecting coins partially prevents you from going up. Good job!

@Ryano @sillyman987 Thanks!

@firellon Well done! :)

@thesunshineraven How far did you get? After play-testing all weekend long, I forgot that it's probably quite challenging for new players. ;) A global highscore table would indeed be very nice, I still have to learn how to do that...

@banzi Thank you! Indeed, when you collect a coin, you lose some altitude. That's the price you pay, it's a trade-off. ;) If you're too greedy, you've got a problem! Did you notice the platforms on the side?

@papaver pheew, I'm afraid I can't remember ... a bit over 200 I think. not an amazing score but I tend to panic and just randomly jump when under pressure :D and I get what you're saying – we were also thinking about global leaderboards but haven't figured out a way yet :)

I liked the idea and the graphics were really good but the controls felt a bit weird

@pedro137br Thanks! Can you specify what felt weird about the controls? (Did you notice that the direction of your jump depends on your position on a coin?)

@papaver yes i notice but still my brain always tought that if i press the up arrow he will go up and not the direction he is facing on the coin

wow, very clever game! I've played lots of similar games (at first glance) on flash and mobile, so I thought it'd be standard fare, but you added 2 things. 1) manual movement, which made the skill floor/ceiling a lot higher since you could make crazier jumps based on what you were going for, and 2) more importantly the consume gold option is GENIUS. It completely changes the decision-making in this genre and makes each jump pretty thoughtful as you're weighing your life bar vs positioning+where you're gonna fall. Overall, I loved the simplicity of the game yet you were able to create so much depth with some small tweaks. Excellent game design and excellent execution!
