Black Friday Shopping by Evgeniya Zapolnova

[raw]
made by Evgeniya Zapolnova for LD 44 (JAM)

To be in time to buy more useless stuff on Black Friday, the hero is ready to make a deal with a daemon. He will pay with his life and the daemon will turn anything into a deadly weapon. No one dares to stand between the hero and the discounts!

screenshot.png

Changelog: * v1 - The actual submission. This version lacks proper game balance, there are no sound effects, crit attacks and weapon effects. And there is no tutorial. * v2 - Post-JAM version with a lot of improvements: fixed game balance, added tutorial, added sounds, fixed tons of bugs in the battle mechanic.

Check out video of the gameplay (v1):

https://youtu.be/jTOGLeETNIo

Art and sounds are from the Unity Store, only the free assets were used.

How to play

You fight versus 1-3 enemies that block you from buying useless stuff with great discount and then you stop at a shop to refill your supplies. In the battle mode you have three buttons: (1) the left one with the crosshair switches between enemies to select the one you want to attack; (2) the middle one with swords attacks enemy with your weapon; (3) the right one opens the inventory.

In the inventory menu you have three pages: weapons, throwables and food. Weapons can have up to three upgrades (represented with skull), with the basic weapon (no skulls) being very weak and each upgrade adding great power to it (power of the demon!) but you have to pay with your life points to get the upgrade! Hover mouse over the item to see its stats (note, weapon effects and critical hit are not ready yet). Clicking on the weapon in the inventory gives you options to upgrade it and equip it.

You can throw throwables into an enemy. Click on the item and choose "Throw" to do that.

Finally, the food is there to recovery your health points.

After each battle you stop in a shop to refill your supplies. You can buy throwables and food for money (you get money for killing enemies), or you can buy new weapons with your health points.

Note

WebGL build is very dark in some places and overbright in others (because of "Gamma" color space instead of "Linear" to support more browsers). Please try Windows or OSX executable if you can!

This had a super weird vibe. It looked like a frankenstein-game concoction of a bunch of unused game assets from mobile games 5 years ago. Not a bad thing that's just my note. I do like the gameplay and the rpg-like turn-based combat. Weird graphics though.

We wanted to see how far one can go with using only free assets from the Unity store. And I would say that was a challenge. I totally agree that the result is Frankenstein-looking, but hey, I hope you at least enjoyed trying to play it and the weird graphics didn't make you sick :)

We wasn't able to balance the game properly though before the end of the jam. So if you enjoyed the gameplay, come back in a day or two and we hopefully will publish an update with a much more interesting gameplay and more features (critical attack and weapon effects are still missing from the game, for example).

Have a nice day :)

Graphics, as mentioned by others, was definitely strange. However, the game felt decently cohesive for being a mash-up of mechanics. Innovative entry, well done!

Overall a really fun idea to be fighting off folks for useless goodies  I'd love to see more RPG style elements for attacking to keep things interesting

The voice acting had me laughing (in a good way). I really enjoyed the way it fit into the feel of the game (struggling to describe why it worked so well)

Well done dudes!

Hey I liked it. The first part was really great but it got repetitive qucikly afterwards. The humor was great. It's a shame that the banana seemed like the best weapon, there was no point in buying new ones or use anything else, which is a shame since it could have added a lot of depth.

@dev-dennis each weapon that you can buy or get from enemies is very weak. But you can upgrade it and have bigger damage. We didn't have enough time to show max damage in shop screen :(

Second level plunger is stronger, than third level banana ;)

Thank you for comment!! I collect feedback to make this game ideal in the future :)

Great entry overall, I think something that can be done to avoid "frankenstein" looking graphics is to use shader with a distict artstyle, like cellshaded, plain color, or something weird looking.

@ausstein Thanks for pointing that out! We'll fix it. In the mean time you can drag scrollable area with a mouse.

@josehzz Nice idea, we didn't think about it, but it sounds like it may really help. Thanks for idea!

Had a weird glitch where the player and all the enemies disappeared, and I couldn't do anything past that. So I didn't end up making it too far, but I still loved the game a lot so expect a high score from me. Great gameplay, sound, and graphics. Just excellent work overall.

"Oddly enjoyable" is the best way I can describe it. The art style is best described as "A tornado of assets", but somehow it ends up being charming through it all. The mechanics themselves were surprisingly deep once I got a feel for them, and the intro/tutorial explained everything in a clear/guided manner.

Great job!

@maakole Its disappointing that you had a glitch :( If you can give more details at what moment that happened (which map, was it your move or enemy move, was the inventory open), we could try to track down that bug and fix it. Anyway, I am glad that you loved the game!

@nikolay-zapolnov It was in level 2, the 3rd fight. I was fighting 3 of those crazy looking guys. When the 1st one is nearly dead, he throws a knife and then runs away. While running away he disappears. Then the 2nd one disappears while I'm in the middle of fighting him. Then the 3rd one throws a knife but doesn't run away, then he disappears, then I kill him while he's invisible. Then after the fight the player disappears and at that point I couldn't do anything else.

I was unable to make it past the first battle on the first try. I guess luck was not on my side. Afterwards I gave it another try and made it to the front of the store. I then bought a frying pan and lost the next battle. I felt that I didn't have much chance to get further in the game. I like the graphics very much like a 3d version of the river city ransom sprites. Fun and cartoon characters. Now I need some warm pea stew.

@tinykidtoo Was it original version or the post-jam one? We didn’t have time to balance the original one before end, so its balance is crazy. In v2 first battle is a tutorial and should be always passable (damage was tweaked to specific values), though of course there could be bugs.

Some nice visuals here that match together well. The audio side was lacking though... I've never used a banana as a weapon before, so nice work :)

When I got to the third level it seemed that all enemies had their health bumped up so much that it became very hard to kill them. After losing to the difficult enemies on the third level, it seems I got restarted back to the beginning of that level. Unfortunately, it then became impossible to be able to complete the third level since the same situation repeated in which I keep losing. Please find a better way for the player to restart the game or level. Overall a decent game.

@bustosman Thanks for the feedback! It is intended that enemies become stronger, so that you have to upgrade your weapons. Indeed we missed the point that you can't upgrade after death and so you get stuck in an endless dying loop. We will think how to improve this.

Hey there! I'm very sorry I couldn't feature your game on the stream, but thank you for submitting it, its super fun!
I think some of the stuff you can buy at the start is a bit OP (the rifle carried me through the whole shopping spree), but everything is super well designed, the UI works great, and the battle system is super well put together. Hope to see what else you'll do in the future.

As a simplified turn-based RPG, the battle system was easy to comprehend. The strategy of the game was clearly indicated, making it a thinking a game (a good sign). Since the instructions were pretty sophisticated, it may be worth putting a tutorial in at some point. I also feel that the battle system is too simple. It has a, what I like to call, "optimization problem" where the same strategy works in every single battle. It might be worth adding elemental weaknesses, new weapons/party members that support those weaknesses, resources, etc. to add variety to each battle.
