Interdenominational BROwS by Ratherjolly

[raw]
made by Ratherjolly for LD 41 (JAM)

(LOCAL COOP / SPLIT SCREEN / 2D and 3D)

What do you get when you try to mix a 2d TopDown Farming Sim with a 3d first person shooter over a weekend? - This. You get this.

IB-LD41-sm.gif

STORY :D - P1 has been neglecting the Flower God. With the help of his interdenominational friend, P2, harvest the flowerbeds of the nearby AngryPeep Garden. If you're lucky, you will have enough flowers to appease the Flower God.

KNOWN ISSUES - If P2 tries to head-butt the lil Angrypeeps, sometimes it causes P2 to completely and utterly explode out of the garden into white nothingness (Must be a lot of negative energy between them) - This game is either called Interdenominational BROwS or Interdimensional BROwS. Either is correct.

UPDATES - (windows) For whatever reason, P1's Pickup wasn't working. I fixed that and added Resolution options (which will probably completely shatter my split-screen settings. Hooray!)

I enjoyed the look of this game and that one player is 3d while the other is in 2d. It gives the game a different feel. I thought the narration was a nice a touch.

This is a interesting little game, and the developer commentary was really funny. The way the split screen works is both super cool, but it is also super confusing. Overall a well made game.

Thanks, @BalladofSong! The Narration was sort of a last few hours decision after putting off UI till Sunday. I'm happy you liked it xD
@jk5000 I totally agree with you on the split screen. I wanted to see if I could do it and I feel like I succeeded in both proving that I could as well as attempting to follow the theme of "Combine two incompatible genres". Thank you for playing :D

Funny to see how every game in this JAM is so unique in some way :) Good job!

I'm not sure what happened but player 2 suddenly got thrown way off the map and I had to run around and try to pick flowers by myself with half the screen solid white. The narration was jarring at first but endearing and kind of reminded me of playing The Beginners Guide or Icey. More developers should play with that idea.

Thanks @EstacaoMarte! I totally agree haha The theme was so wild It's almost hard to imagine a totally normal game xD
Sorry that happened, @Lost Dutchman Software! Oh man, That's a bug for sure haha. At any rate, thank you for trying this out! I had an idea of triggering commentary audio whenever the player would perform a first action, but opted to keep it simple. Perhaps I'll play with this idea further...

Nice! I like the way you slit the screen. I had no one to play with me, so I was playing both p1 and p2. I don't know if that was the intention. Not that hard to play both sides of the screen (but not simultaneously ;)). I like that you put your voice over the beginning. It was different and felt more humane. I wish more developers do the same in the future. PS: I could only pick flowers after a monster had gotten over my head.

Thanks for playing, @Dyoni! playing as both P1 and p2 is definitely a challenge haha. Originally I had mapped the controls to make it easier to do both at once, but decided to change it at some point a few hours before submission (the best time to make ANY definitive change to your game). And you're totally right about the flowers! This is a bug... or a feature! Yes, let's go with that ;)

This was fun play through! Normally, the music would set the mood - but I actually honestly loved the commentary and the explanation of what's going on! I have no friends so I just played 2 players at once, but I managed to get all the flowers, awesome game :)

I thought the split screen was cool, I also had some ideas about combining 2d and 3d ... cool concept, good execution on the theme!

Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed it, @patvanmackelberg! The commentary was an idea that sort of came out of a necessity of time, but it was really fun to do. If I had another day I was thinking of adding several first action commentary triggers, but I'm alright with how it ended up :) I also hear you on playing by it by yourself (that was me all weekend haha). Originally the controls were going to be configurable to make it as easy as possible to play multi/solo, but opted not to go down that route since I was waste deep in Vector logic and crazy Quaternions from the split screen system xD

Thanks for playing @don.shinski! I learned a TON this Ludum Dare with that Split screen hoopla. It was a little intense, but I'm happy I was able to get it to work. My biggest goal was to embrace the theme and I feel like I could at least check that box off of my list of goals haha

Interesting game. 2d+3d+ split screen.

Your narration reminded me about "stanley parable".

It's very difficult to add split screen in game, I really appreciate it.

I like it.

Very interesting choice of theme for the game, wouldn't have thought of mixing 2d and 3d :D Loved the split screen! Good job

Lovely voiceover, unluckily for me on my first playthrough, before the voice managed to explain what I'm supposed to be doing, both characters have been somehow launched into outer space by the angry peeps. Second time was cool, definitely an interesting take on the theme. The rotating split screen was a bit annoying at times, but overall great job! (plus the controls are really simple and well placed, so you can play this even if you don't have any friends, that's a plus)

Thanks, @Velocity7! Awesome haha it was fun to make xD I'm happy you liked it!!

Thanks, @Johan nh! I've been noodling with the idea of drastic perspective shifts in local coop (maybe help with screen peek issues). I'm happy that you like the 3d/2d occlusion split screen!

Thanks, @Ballin! Sorry for the explosion into space! Oh man. That must have been a surprise... I appreciate that you gave it another try! I could easily pour more time into the split screen haha happy you liked it!

I'm not sure if you were able to see it, but I played your game on my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames tonight.

This is an interesting idea if it could be expanded on. I liked that the angle of the split screen was controlled by where player one was. The narration really detracted from the experience and was way too long though. We had completely finished the game before the narration ended.
🎤 Ratherjolly
07. May 2018 · 15:09 UTC
Thank you for your feedback, @saoi-games! Part of the intention with the narration was to have it go longer than the game would actually take to win, but I could see how this could easily get annoying haha.

I spend most of the time this jam working on getting splitscreen and parallel 3d/2d worlds. Looking back, it would have been a good idea to set some more time aside for Audio and probably having the option to disable the voice if you press a button xD

Excellently put together, love the concept all though I wish I could've played with a player/perspective of my choosing and leave the multiplayer as optional

Mine is single player only, not as good as yours but if you can give it a look :)

Ha! I had to play it as a singleplayer game (#sad) but still managed to get the hang of it while I listened to the dev commentary.

Regarding mechanics, it was pretty simple, much like a tutorial level, but there's quite some potential with the players having different abilities. In later levels (should you decide to keep working on it) I see some MC Escher like architecture for the top-down player, for example.

Maybe a mix of action and puzzling would be fun too, such as figuring out a way to progress, then some frantic shooting and then some exploration for both players.

Okay, I'll stop now before I try to turn it into a Zelda game ;)

Thanks for you feedback, @ian1337! That's a really great point! Originally the idea was to be able to hot-swap gaming perspectives between players as a mechanic (or toggle them in single player)
I'm looking forward to playing your game when I get back to my desktop PC!

@PhilStrahl! Thanks for playing and Great job on the play-through! I thoroughly enjoyed your commentary on this and super appreciate it :]

Also, Great Suggestions on advancing the design in the perspective shift of the game! There was SO much more I had hoped to add to it before I had to start cutting some major content. By the end, it really did become a bit of glorified tutorial level of a game, but at the very least, playable haha. Thanks again for playing :D

I played it with my brother. It's an interesting concept which matches the theme perfectly. It would work fine as a full game.
It's a bit weird to play with the player views changing from side to side, inclination... But once you get used to it it's not bad at all. Overall, a good game!

This was a fun experience, even if a little short! Your voice over, despite being a quick fix to no tutorial, I feel added a lot to the game and mood! I was particular impressed by the split screen mechanic - the rotating split screen that is. The concept itself is nice, was a bit tricky to play p1 and p2 with just one person - but thats not your fault!! Would have been nice if there was perhaps a larger level with my decisions to make, or perhaps a risk of death if p1 was overwhelmed by those mean old flower god minions!! <3
