Area 51 by jondalnas

[raw]
made by jondalnas for LD 40 (COMPO)

Hi. Thank you for trying my game.

I had some problems with the difficulty in level 4, just so you don't break your keyboard over it.

Enjoy

How to play:

You are a rouge Area 51 agent.
Your mission is to get out of the base.
You are armed with a prototype weapon.
The weapon regenerates bullets over time, but the bullets are heavy.
All the walls are covered in a special paint that allow bullets to bounce off of them.

Good luck

I really like this game, you'll got a very solid shooter if you iron out a few things.

1. The bullets don't fire towards the cursor. If you're looking exactly to the left, right, up or down they will go towards your mouse. But if you're looking kind of diagonally they'll miss it. This, along with the fact that bullets don't come from your gun but rather from the center of your body can make it very annoying to line up shots.

2. Trying to land sick calculated bouncing shots is by far the best part of the game, but you don't get punished at all if you just sit behind a corner and spam LMB at random trajectories until everything is dead. I think limited ammo would do miracles for this game.

3. The bullet heaviness mechanic makes no sense. This isn't a fast paced game where you have stuff chasing you, so moving a bit slower is at best annoying. You can take your time and approach enemies at your own pace, so having a lot of bullets stacked up isn't punishing at all. It feels like it's only slapped on top for the sake of the theme.

Other than that I really liked the game. I think you can turn it into a great tactical shooter if you work on it for a bit longer.

I agree with everything alexv said. The movement was also a bit too fast for me, but I still enjoyed the game. Good job!

Os gráficos são simples, os efeitos sonoros combinam e o gameplay é bem fluido e divertido

O unico problema que eu percebi é que a mira não é muito precisa, mas mesmo assim é um jogo bem divertido

Parabéns cara, é um ótimo jogo

@alex said it all ; the game is really cool and the mechanics are really nice, if it was a bit more polished it could make a great game :)

I love the Hotline Miami + a new cool mechanic feel to it. Still, I don't think that slowing down with each new bullet is a successful mechanic, since the movement at the beginning is too fast anyway, and whenever you get too much bullets you can just shoot them away to gain your speed back. Polish it, and call all of us to play it again - we definitely will.

The bouncing of the bullets worked very well. I liked your graphics escpally the when someone died and blood spilled at the floor that looked satisfiyng. It was a bit akward, that the bullets did not exactly fly in the direction where the mouse pointed.

I'd also agree with everything alexv said. The game is great and has a very cool feel to it and the bouncing mechanic is just a hell lot of fun. Though the slowing down mechanic seems slapped on top it could be developed into an interesting direction, because if you have to fire bullets constantly you also endanger yourself, but the downside of having many bullets is just not really punishing at the moment (maybe just make the player explode at more than 4 bullets, that could turn the game into a real adrenaline rush but would also pretty much eliminate the tactical element...)

Hi, here is some feedback,

 **What I liked:**
✱ Overall fun
✱ Nervous play
✱ Audio works well

:muscle: **What imo could be improved:**
✱ Very hard to predict what's gonna happen due to camera giving a very narrow view. Most of the time you preshot things out of screen and hope a bullet won't come back. Getting in action is too dangerous and not an option.
✱ The "slower with more ammo" mechanic is innovative but you don't really take advantage of it: no optimal stratgies or specific situation really benefit from it. As this is your core innovative mechanic you really should build the design of the game around it.
✱ Graphics are readable but we all like prettiness =)

:sparkles: **Overall**
✱ Had fun! Implementation is good, some promising ideas, Keep going! Thanks for the game!

I loved playing this game very much. It has a great idea and implementation was flawless too.

The problems I found was in game design. Like increasing the number of bullets made you slower which was a penalty but the way I could simply shoot all the bullets at an empty space and remove the penalty defied the purpose of it. Also, I didn't understand why you did it- I know about the theme of this LD but I didn't make sense of it in the game- like do you want the player to shoot more or move faster? Maybe you could make the shooting attract the attention of enemies and this way you will punish the player if he started shooting at empty space and so he will have to move faster so that he doesn't accumulate many bullets and get heavier.

I loved the graphics too and the sound effects; it felt very instantaneous. And the idea of killing yourself with the ricochet is brilliant. I killed myself too many times :D

Overall really amazing game. Congratulations :)
