Rat blasteroid by Massimog

[raw]
made by Massimog for LD 39 (JAM)

Rat blasteroid is an action platformer about shooting rats in space while maintaining your shield and weapon energy. It has deep social commentary, trust us. Move with A and D, jump with space, melee with left mouse, shoot with right mouse. Break an enemy's shield (blue bars) to stun them, then left-click on them to dash to them, with a chance to restore your health. Melee restores your gun-drone's power. Your shields regenerate, but will eventually disappear permanently. Thanks for playing!

I couldn't get past the first room which I was stuck in, so was just there shooting the same mouse over and over again. Definitely not the same as the screenshot. I tried to get anywhere else but couldn't work it out. Maybe something wrong with the build? Am I missing something?

I also had trouble getting to the second level. Nice quirky characters, gameplay not particularly intuitive.

@flipsy @didactylos Added a .gif showing how to get past. Sorry, it's a little unintuitive but we didn't have time to implement a better tutorial.

Once I figured out the teleporting melee mechanic, I quite liked it actually! It feels pretty cool to stun and then teleport for the kill.

Took awhile to get past that first room, I got stuck in wall once. Once past that the game was really fun, nice mechanics with shooting the shield then using melee. Fun, fast paced game.

It doesn't have any bugs. The enemies are kinda easier than should be though, at least at first, dunno if it gets harder. The mechanic of shooting an enemy twice then dashing to them sounds over the top, I don't see why I don't just melee everyone. Over all though its a nice game, not buggy and well made.

I was stuck in the first room until I saw the walkthrough gif T.T .
Nice game with nice pixel art. Could use a better tutorial too.

Fun game once I got to the meat of it! Had trouble getting past the second room. The first blue capsule saying to jump had me mistake it for being harmful and I ended up avoiding the second capsule in every way until I saw the description that popped up by being nearby. Just a little UI issue, but the game is otherwise good! :)

It took me forever to figure out the teleportation mechanic. Other than that the movement feels REALLY good and the sound effects are simple but effective. Good job.

Nice entry! I like the graphics and sound. Like a lot of the commenters above, I had a bit of trouble figuring out the teleport, but once I got rolling it was pretty straightforward. Good work!

I loved that double-tap combo of stun and melee teleport, I don't think I've seen skills combo that well in any of the other games yet.

I got a little bit lost on the tutorial, but its all good. Miss some background music and i find it a little bit hard to aim, hit and dodge but i have fun anyway. Good job

I scored 29. I really liked your tutorial, it was a nice way of integrating it as a lot of LD games tend to just leave you to figure it out! The teleporting mechanic felt pretty fun to use as well, and that could definitely be developed into something cool (maybe even with puzzles).

Well teleportation mechanic is really interesting.

I think shrinking the player or decreasing number of enemies would improve the game.

Had fun, but it gets hard really fast. As the post above mine mentions, it would improve with a little less enemies in the beginning while you still get the hang of the controls

Nice work
