Bridging the Gap by Bobok

[raw]
made by Bobok for LD 41 (JAM)

Puzzle Platformer and Bridging the gap between genres. Not so incompatible but with improper game mechanics it can be. Essentially you try to make a bridge but you know how tetramina are they tend to disappear if let’s say they are 3 in the same row so you must build a bridge that goes up down in a very unstable manner with an even more unstable way of moving the tetramina by applying forces from user input.

UPDATE It was to empty here so I decided to put a screenshot (sorry first JAM)

And a spoiler video of the whole gameplay as it is intented to be (if something doesn't work as seen below please report a bug).

CONTROLS

Use W, S, A, D or Arrows to apply force and move

Use 1, 2, 3, 4 to change the cube that force is applied

Use Space to place tetramino in slots (when on slotted game level)

May the force be with you

This my favourite game so far! I'd like to see more of it!

I liked the concept, it is pretty addictive! This would work really fine as a complete game. Also the graphics are cute.

It was a bit hard to move the tetrimino, it spins fluidly in all positions except when the three bottom blocks are on the ground, in that position it is a bit hard to give force to it, but it is funny to play it anyways.

By the way, the music is epic!

Thanks @joekickass @NikROD and sorry for the late reply. By now I am sure you 've seen more games to have as favourites. If you liked it we will give more Sextris to the people (after I totally refactor my 2-days crappy code πŸ˜‹). The next level can be on a kitchen (even multiplayer tetramina vs your beautiful rat πŸ™‚).

Thanks @AnaGF. Yeap the movement was designed to be annoying but yes with some play testing it can for surely improve. On a sidenote also your music on the hive attack was epic and on another sidenote I loved the Capitalist Shopkeeper!!!

Nice work on the environment and cinematics, the gameplay itself is okay, but I wish there was a little more to do with it. A few more levels would have been ideal.

The idea is fun, and the story is good. The controls makes the game really difficult to play. I would really like to see bit more developed version of this game.

If you don't like to share the source code, you do not have to do this, when you are a jam game.

Thanks @pogo and @jk5000! Yeap for the jam I did only one example level but after the jam would like to do a bit more after refactoring my code. Yes intentionally I left it intentionally to be a bit more difficult but with some play testing it can be more user friendly for sure.
Yeap I know about the code (only on compo) probably will remove the link

The presentation is great. I just wish the control scheme was better. I found it incredibly hard to move, even just going down the beach in the starting area. Pressing "up" always seemed to jump me backwards. My best attempt was jabbing "right" 9 times per second kind while randomly pressing 1, 2, 3, or 4.

I think difficulty should come from gameplay, not from the control scheme.

But if you figure that out, I think the game will work. Tetris blocks as people is a theme that should amuse plenty of people.

Your idea seems interesting but actual gameplay doesn’t do justice for it. Moving is painfully slow and annoying. You could have listed controls somewhere, LD entry page for example. At moment you leave player without any clue how actually play your game. Visuals are nice, an interesting idea could have been to make everything out of blocks as that is theme of your game. Are those songs in game made by you? That tetris metal remix sounds awfully familiar...

Thanks @alans-antics you are right there that the difficulty should come from gameplay not from control theme, but haven't realised that in the beginning (I assumed incompatibility also in controls). If I develop it further after ludum dare finishes will play test more on this

@Tuomo thanks for your feedback. There is a control button on the top right of the screen (or at least there should be one). Nope the songs are not mine (except the dialgo soundd effects) everything can be found on youtube (The tetris song is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy3kMOQ6UB4). Yes moving is annoying I get that a lot and if I do something with it after ludum dare will play test more and find a better balance.

Looks like cool idea, but I don't quite understand how properly to play :/

Thx @dcrdro! Yes no time for tutorial I am afraid but essentially you just try to go right build a bridge avoiding 3 blocks in a row (because they will dissapear) and save your beloved Tetramino lady :). Up Right there is a button with controls essentially W,A,S,D to move - 1,2,3,4 to apply force - space to build the bridge when on the appropriate game level
