Sheep It by anstabo

[raw]
made by anstabo for LD 44 (JAM)

Sheep It is a relaxing game about using sheep lives as currency for tools. You have to send more than 150 sheeps to complete the game.

Patch Notes

Update 1 :

  • Fixed a bug where a sheep would sometimes stare into space, wondering the meaning of life.
  • Reduced the chance of a sheep floating above the pit.
  • Increased the mass of the key and collector bots. This will prevent them from being thrown on the road from the reward pipe.
  • Fixed a bug where spamming pick up next to a pickable (Sheep, bot, lure ...) would get it stuck.

So cute!!! The animations are greatm, and the sheeps are so cute!!!
I was just a bit confused by what should I do with the orange "thingies" that come out when I sell the sheeps LOL.
Overall, pretty good and cute game!

@nyunesu Hi ! Sure thing, I can share sources via PM. Poke me on Discord with Fluffy_Kaeloky#0117.

@Wyatt Thanks ! And yeah we also happened to lose a couple keys like that. The reward pipes launch them a bit too strongly, but we didn't have time to fix it. I'll get a post jam fix for that ;)

This was absolutely gorgeous. I loved every second of it. I was extremely relaxed while playing and surprisingly was brought back to the feelings I had when playing Stardew Valley. I think my favorite part of the game though is the fact that you put in automation. Being able to explore the world you created was incredible. Astoundingly well done!

Lovely graphics and sound! I found the gameplay to be a bit inscrutable, though; one of my robots just grabbed a sheep and held it near the truck, the other would just keep wandering off. Getting automation into a game jam is ambitious, in any case, so I'm still impressed that it works as well as it does!

@killscreen Yep, we do have some issues with the AIs sometimes. (Well, ok, often x) )

If anything, in this jam, I've learnt that this is the last time I try to write AIs with multiple behaviours without behaviour trees x)

Very good game you got here. Love the graphics, but the camera gave me a headache over time, maybe make it less bouncy? I also experienced the AI issues that other people did, they got stuck on orbs and threw sheep into the street (that part was actually a rather amusing flaw). Overall, well done.

Maybe the most quiet game which I have ever seen for a LudumDare entry. The animations are amazing - smooth, cute and fun. The main gameplay is not really unusual, but I had fun playing. I love the banjo as a background track. You did a solid entry. Well done. Thank you. I wish you the best ++

Thats a quite solid and funny entry.

Never expected to see what proposes to be a relaxing game but includes some kind of automation mechanic. And it actually works (not only as the intented mechanic but along with the relaxing theme).

I was prone to comment about the sheep treatment until i saw the end, which also was quite the fun and surprise.

Somehow the graphics manage to be simplistic yet attractive. I guess its the minimalist aesthetic that is pleasant and fit the relaxing theme along the gently melody.

It just runs a little away from the theme when it's not your life that is the currency, but the sheep.

Anyway, excellent job making this game. Hoping to see more quality content in the next jams!

(is that sound from stepping the mushrooms ... huh ... farts?)

It was great! The animations are hilarious, audio fits the style (mushrooms were fun to step on), the art is fantastic and the automation mechanics work very well (after you figure out how to properly set up the waypoints). You really feel like your making progress by figuring out you to best get the sheep where they need to go. I didn't quite get the ending though and throwing sheep into the truck seemed unnecessarily challenging at time. A little anticipation animation before the truck leaves would've helped.
If you have some more ideas on automation and how to progress further, I'd encourage you to continue work on this, it might have some potential beyond the jam!

I got captured by the cool graphics so I had to try it. I think the color palette is really really nice: how do you guys choose such a good palette? I mean what is the process of choosing this wonderful colors? I would like to learn more about it. The game title is super super cool, I always struggle to find cool names for my games :( . I found the mechanic of throwing the sheep onto the truck quite annoying, I wish there was a better way to drive the player towards a clean linear progression while exploring this beautiful world. On the other hand tho, I spent 15 minutes jumping on the mushrooms to hear those juice sounds :) . Really good job on sounds and the music is very relaxing. Overall a really good experience. I think this game has already a lot of potential. Good work!

Man, the feel of this game is so cool. The graphics are awesome, and the animations just make it all come together. The background music is also perfect (and the sound effects are great, especially the mushrooms haha). It also just runs and feels really good mechanically. Seriously, the production value is so good for a LD game. The only issue I had is that, after awhile, I didn't feel that motivated to keep tossing sheep into the truck despite the tools and robots that came to help. It would be cool if there were some other elements to the game, like the ability to build things that could help you, etc. There's a lot of potential to this game as far as continuing to expand the concept. Overall though, such a good entry. One of my favorites so far. Nice work!

02. May 2019 · 02:39 UTC
@joe-bustamante I feel you on this one. Unfortunately, we ran out of time for adding content, and we prefered to polish what we already had on the last day instead of adding things. If anything, as the programmer, I could have gone faster if I made the AIs with behaviors trees. That's something I learnt this jam : not doing another semi-complex (multiple behaviors styles) AI by hand x)

Perhaps we should make the game a little easier on the sheep count, but once you manage to create all the relays for the sheeps, the truck constantly goes with 15+ sheeps. It's really a matter of if the player does automate or not for the game length ^^

Nice vegetation shading (apart of some trees showing the tip of the trunk on top of It), i would add some "see through" feature to avoid occclusion of the protagonist, robot, and sheeps.

Increase the "breaks volume alittle more" and emit a "horn" sfx for the truck when it arrives to assist the user;

Some "grab" sfx like a protagonist "grunt" to add some weight to the sheep, some grunt to the throw action to add some force and stregnth, also a sheep feedback to maybe add the feeling of hugging It;

Change completely the orange balls that you use to lure the ships by something that looks like a bait (carrots, apples, lettuce);

Some Reverberance to increase the sensation of a more open space.

Really fun and professional game! You can tell that you guys are a serious studio with a big Steam game on the way! This deserves the attention it gets! The graphics are extremely stylised and cute, be it the art style, the shaders, or the animations. It's very cute. The premise is simple and you hit the nail on the head about it being relaxing. I will say it's not perfect. I had a few bugs where the robots were a bit confused and kept going in random directions and turning after a little bit, as well as the sheeps (^-^) going in circles in a corner by the little stream. However, on the whole, very good. Now, I will say, there is an issue with the web version. I believe I had 77 sheeps left to throw when I got this error: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/477349680586555392/573504608605831188/unknown.png I don't know if this is present on Windows as well, but it certainly is annoying. Nonetheless, fun game, well-made, extremely professional! Well done!

@wfmg We had the same bug delaying the WebGL release at first. We fixed it going from Unity 2018 to 2019 (and applying a couple bugfixes after that). Unfortunately, the window your are seeing is the result of the bug. If you have the window still open, the bug that actually caused that will have it's stacktrace printed in the dev console (Opened by pressing F12). With the screenshot you gave, I unfortunately can't make any conclusion from it :<

Anyway, thanks for the kind words and bug report, I'm glad you still enjoyed the game ! And sorry about that ruining your playthrough :s

Wow! This is the most polished and entry I have played. Everything has it's place and feels complete. The sheep, the soft music, the farting mushrooms, the squat-dancing idle character, the process of discovery as new items get shunted out of the tool pipe... it all fits together perfectly.

Highlights for me were discovering that the sheep orbs make you a pied-piper of sheep, and unlocking the first door only to have all the sheep get distracted by the pit of death.

It was a joy to play, and the mega-sheep ending was the cherry on top

Great graphics and funny sound effects (mushrooms and sheep)! I was worried that there wouldn't be enough sheep, since a bunch of them fell in between the truck and the bank of the road. However I noticed that they keep respawning, so that was no problem. The broken fence near the cliff that you can kinda fix with the movable fence was funny since sheep kept trying to jump down. The sheep also kept walking in circles and sometimes didn't react to the orange sphere (untill you walk into them). Sometimes the sheep form a very high stack of sheeps, this mainly happens on the bridge and the spawn area near the cliff. I thought that 150 made the game to long. The robots were a good addition, but the game kinda plays itself after that.

What a nice solid game! It was relaxing and very fun! I loved the musci, the animations, the graphics. Some sound fx were very funny. The truck animation is expecially good and it was fun trying to aim for it (playing with wasd wasn't very comfortable. If you just could add arrows!)

Really funny game.
I fell in love with those bouncing sheeps since the very first moment.
Music is relaxing and perfectly fits the global mood.
I'm one of the ones who prefer arrows to WASD, but it is really a minor issue! My only problem is that i keep hit E instead of W, throwing my sheeps everywere (and losing time to laugh at their bouncing behaviour).

I liked! I really enjoyed the game. The quiet background music is very good, the art is simple and beautiful and the design is clean. Hahaha I stole some sheep through the fence, I don't know if it is intentional that this can be done, but I found it funny. The behavior of the sheep is cute to see, the robots help a lot, even if sometimes they get stuck in something somewhere. The game itself even being repetitive can be a lot of fun, I spent a lot of time playing.

ps: Haha I didn't know that the sheep could be suicidal xD (in one of the times I wanted to get rid of some spheres, so I tried to play one on the cliff, but It didn't disappear, It stayed there and the sheep were jumping from there and I didn't know what to do, I didn't know whether to laugh or if I jumped too ~~you can't do that~~) The ending was unexpected hahaha. Great job!

Really awesome game! This is one of my favorites so far :)

The music, sound effects, animations and interactions all established a fun and inviting mood to the game. The first time I stepped on a shroom, I didn't know what happened. Then when I got to the shroom-filled area, I laughed as I frolicked through the fart field.

My only suggestion is really minor: try to fit the waypointing globes better within your setting.

Both the audio and the visuals are absolutely top notch. Initially I imagined collecting the sheep would be tedious, but it becomes strangely relaxing. The only gripe I have, is that the connection with the theme isn't quite there. There's also a bug where if you jump against a wall you consistently get stuck in the jumping animation, being unable to jump again or pick up anything until you somehow maneuver yourself back into the running animation. Other than that, the game is an absolute joy! Good job!

Well, I think I beat the game.^^" When I saw the Muscular Sheep I took a screenshot (with ShareX), the gamescreen went black and paf back to 150 sheep to put in the truck.

Anyway, the animations are great and really fun, especially the character's walk cycle.
The music suits well the game and is pretty relaxing.

I loved the robots and how they work. It really adds to the game and provide a fun thing that wanders around to grab sheep.

Nice job on the gameplay overall. :)
