Poverty Farmer by Mightymaster99

[raw]
made by Mightymaster99 for LD 43 (COMPO)

You play as a family of four in a third world country. Naturally, your family is too poor to be able to sustain anything long-term. With minimal amounts of money, you will have to make sacrifices on both ends; your farm and your family, in order to survive and thrive. Can you do it? Or will you crumble under the pressure of the Poverty Farm?

Please run in Windowed Mode at a resolution of 1024x768. It'll look the best that way.

A few notes about the game before you start: - The tiles in the top left are your menu for shops. You can buy plants, tools, or animals. - The blue and pink cylinders are your family. You can click on them to interact with them. You'll want to, too. - The top right has a Play button, which will simulate a year passing in the game.

You have an amazing concept here! A resource management/business game with different ways of making income, where you start with virtually nothing. I am in love with it. Although, the mechanics are not obvious and the game is pretty unpolished. I would love to see you develop this further!

I couldn't get past turn 1. Idk if the build you uploaded for windows is bugged or not?
I love the idea of it.

A promising concept; it seems that the turn counter doesn't advance and the game can sometimes suddenly reset. Adherence to the theme is definitely unique and quite innovative nonetheless.

@jackson-makes-games Thank you very much! Unfortunately, Ludum Dare wasn't on my calendar, so my friend told me about it after Day 1 was over. That should explain it being unpolished. I tried to explain the mechanics in the description here, but I agree that it would be better to have something in the game. I think I'll add that in a later build, when I polish it some more.

@pandan The game may be bugged, but it IS meant to be hard. I'm glad you love the idea of it!

@carlpilot Thank you for letting me know of the bugs! I didn't have much time to extensively test this. Ludum Dare wasn't on my calendar, so I found out it was going on after Day 1 was over. This was a pretty rushed game.

you should finish it for the Jam deadline if possible!

Great effort, especially if you did it in a day (makes me sort of ashamed of what I did in two). I'd love to spend more time figuring out the best way to run my farm but I've got other games to rate.

@slashee-the-cow Thank you! And don't be ashamed. I've been programming with Unity for years, so I kinda got used to time crunches and knowing how to program some stuff. Though, I'm sure your game was great anyways! In fact, I just downloaded it.

Multiple times while playing I would click on the "Continue" button, and briefly see a flash of another menu and then the game would reset.

I suspect that after I got my report telling me that I had survived the year, it was popping up a 'failure' menu behind it, and since the "Continue" and "Start over" buttons are in the same place, my click on the "Continue" was also clicking on "Start over" in the instant that the success window disapeared.

Between that and the several legitimate first-year losses, I wasn't able to play the 2nd year despite quite a lot of attempts.

Made me sad, because I love the idea and I'm a sucker for punishing games.

@sargonius Thank you for the feedback! Unfortunately, I'm not an artist, so UI and UX weren't too high of a priority. Especially since I found out this started at the end of Day 1 and only had 24 hours to make it.

@jannick-larsen I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed the idea and mechanics! I'll continue testing and finding what caused the lag.

@bj-pucci Thank you for letting me know! I don't know what could be causing the crash, but I'll be sure to look into it.

I can see this being a game I'd get addicted to with more work. Was a little sad that the money kept reseting every other year for some reason. would of loved to see how long I could keep my family alive. XD

@jessicawall @Zanagi Thank you both for your feedback. I've been working on fixing the game and that constant reset bug. It's apparently harder to fix than I initially thought. Then again, that's what happens when you try to code a game in 24 hours (I found out about the game jam late by a day). Hopefully, this will be fixed soon.

@samuel-porter Thank you for posting the error code. I'll be sure to fix it at some point, once I get the rest of the game to work.

Really nice idea, but it is hard to see which actions have which result. For example, you cannot see which crop or animal earned you how much money. Also, I think there is a bug that after clicking "Try again" once, the "Next turn" button will always reset the game.

Hmm, I can't seem to get past Day 1 - I get a summary, says I get income, then back to Day 1 / $50 :(. Generally like this kind of game though!

@jimbly Hey, I'm glad you like this kind of game! I've actually been working on it. Per rules of the Ludum Dare (I think), I'm keeping the original (broken) game up. But I made a post linking an improved version of the game! Here it is: https://mightymaster99.itch.io/poverty-farmer

By the [rules](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/rules), you're allowed to fix minor "bugs" - being unable to advance the day seems like a bug, not a failure in design (although maybe I was just misunderstanding something in the game), so I think it'd be fine to fix that.
> Certain Bug Fixes are allowed. You can’t add new features, but if something broke or didn’t work correctly as you were finishing up, you can fix this after the deadline. You are asked to highlight the changes you make in your submission (a short change log).

When I've got some time, I'll try to check out your new one =).
