BufferMAN: Hack 80's style! by Akryllax

[raw]
made by Akryllax for LD 40 (JAM)

Hack through the buffer!

But in the 80s style! Neons and lasers! What else do you need?

BufferMAN is a retro-inspired plataformer prototype with the sights put into puzzle solving and speedrunning. The core mechanincs are simple enough, but mastery will be difficult.

Controls note:

  • There's NO air control (anoying and intended). Plan your moving.
  • The freeze gun freezes only movable objects. The purple/dark pink ones.

The prototype is in a proof-of-concept stage, but all the elements are there, and if it gets at least a few guys interested, I will continue the game polishing details and making more levels+mechanincs. I love this sutff :)

Feel free to give it a try and a review! I will take everything into account :D

The game has potential. The graphics are very good, a very tron vibe. The setting is insteresting too. But the controls are a bit hard. I think you tried something to ambitious to a game jam, hope you keep improving.

ps. The level 2 is too hard :)

I really liked the look and theme of the game. I had a little trouble with movement and understanding how my abilities factored into things but nonetheless I enjoyed it!

This game really misses a music.
Anyway, a well made game!

I was doing solo, so didn't even have to time to scramble through music libraries and checking licenses etc.

Had to cut down some content and drop some *cleaner* code for hacky versions. I am thinking about actually cleaning the project and add a few levels for the sake of it :D

It's cool what you achieved, I only dislike the "double jump" because some times it doesn't make the jump "double". I noticed that on the two crossing lasers zone. Good puzzles overall.

The movement is a bit wonky, but I liked the idea. The postFX was a little distracting (depth of field), but I enjoyed the look of the game.

Good graphics and overall look of the game. The movement has to get fixed, but the idea is fun.

Cool idea, I liked puzzle with moving blocks. But controls could be better and it have a little to do with theme.

The theme thing was that for every action you performed, you get penalty in vision (fog distance became smaller), but didn't make it in time. (Notice how the block you walk over, turn to Orange).

The above comments sum it up nicely, beautiful graphics but movement need a lot of work!

In all honesty, I'm not a huge fan of the movement or the motion blur/DoF/bloom effects, but this is very intriguing. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how this develops if you choose to work on it post-jam, it's a very interesting concept!!

Very nice visuals. Like the style very much. In these sorts of games I would expect a lot of movement with momentum, but it's opposite here, because you have to stop and think, which makes it interesting and hard.

The graphics are nice, the controls could use some work - jumping felt inconsistent with regards to how far you jump. I also didn't notice the penalty for actions.

Nice aesthetics, including the blur effect. Good variety of obstacles, and I enjoyed looking around level 2. The way it is right now, felt like breaking into a maximum security museum. I'd be interested to see further development on this game!

Nice job. Unfortunately, this seems to be a tragic case of source without implementation. I would rather have a level 2 than most of the extra stuff IN level 2. Good job though! It's pretty fun and the graphics are nice, although I would have liked a little sound. It's kinda blurry all the time, and I know this is on purpose, but it's not great.

This is awesome! To me, this feels like Portal or Antichamber, mostly because of the gameplay/looks but also because of the humor. The graphics and effects are nice, especially the "unfreeze" effect with the matching sound! Great job!

First of all, I truly love this genre of games. Although I am not a fan of the neon style, this game looks good especially the effects. The only thing I gave a low score was the theme since I was unable to find the relation. Overall, great work, I love it.

Nice graphics! I think I would have liked a bit wider-angle view of the room so I could tell where I was standing more easily.

Nice game, liked the Level 1 layout and how it teaches the player about the different controls and moves. Do think the movement could be tightened a bit further but for a jam game with a deadline I know it's always hard to get to the polishing stage. Level 2 was also an interesting surprise :) and glad you did what you did with the time you had. Was interesting to see the different things.
