Last Car Standing by quadtree

[raw]
made by quadtree for LD 41 (COMPO)

Be the last car standing in this Battle Royale/Racing game! Stay ahead of the blue wall of death and be the first to enter the end zone.

Controls: WASD/Arrow Keys to move, Space to fire oil bombs, R to restart.

The display in the upper left shows your position among all cars still remaining in the race. In the upper right is an indicator that appears if your oil bomb launcher is ready, and your speed. Your car's top speed is about 30, and you will slide on an oil slick if you go over one and are going speed 18 or higher.

The oil bombs are very unforgiving, they keep you spinning until the blue comes haha. I managed to win though, the walls were so narrow I got stuck in between while spinning, and the other car couldn't get past! Sometimes the audio would stop, usually when spinning. good job!

This was really tough - and then I discovered the trick of driving backwards, which makes the oil slicks no longer affect me. I don't go very fast, but I also don't spin out anymore, so I win everytime. Neat idea!

Nice job!
Can be a bit hard to tell which car is yours!

Seems like the best option on the last stretch is to just reverse (as you can't spin out when reversing?). I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. Car handling could use some more work, turning seems to slow you down. Nice little game.

Now that's my kind of crazy  - the road can get pretty much covered in oil slicks when you get near the end, but like @Budaniel and @Pete said, drive backwards  - about the only improvement I can think of is an audio indicator for when my oil bomb is recharged so I don't have to take my attention away from my car to know when I can fire it again

Absolutely, lovely! Though the idea is simple, it is one of the best games I played this jam so far.

One point worth mentioning is that the oil bomb is nearly useless since there is oil everywhere which makes the main target is to avoid the ones in front of you so maybe you can find a better way of utilizing the oil bomb. Also, I found it very strange that the cars could launch oil bombs so far ahead of me. I found it a bit illogical :)

Great job on the fun and innovation :)

Good entry, the concept is super simple, but it works well. The road getting smaller is a nice idea to force some confrontation. Winning is a bit random I think, and using your weapon not very effective. I managed to win after a few tries, it was fun. Keep up the good work!

This is a good concept. It somehow captures the battle royale aspect so well, I can hardly call this two incompatible genres! Since the blue zone pushes the racers forward in ever tighter spaces, it's so apt as a battle royale. It would be better though if the blue zone had more leeway and oil is less heavier.

So this game is pretty fun! I actually like the melodic ramp-up of the engine sounds, which sounds like a weird thing to say. At some points I would have liked to maybe have a circle icon or something surrounding my little car as it can get pretty sucked into the visuals of the other cars, but ultimately this is a great submission. :)

Nice cool game. The oil puddles did not activate while reversing which meant in the end where there was a lot of it, you could just drive over everything. Cool sounds and art, some more levels could have been fun. All in all good job!

Nice little battle racing game. Reminds me of R.C. Pro-Am on the NES. I really liked seeing the blue wall take out all of the cars. I did seem to get some slowdown when there were a lot of cars colliding with each other.

One of the most fun games I've played this Ludum Dare. The simple controls and mechanics worked great.

I like how quickly the 'rounds' go, it makes it easier and less frustrating to play multiple times. I wish at the end it would display your final rank or something so that you could track how well you do from game to game easier.

I liked it, pretty hard though! Maybe a bit hard to control. Great concept.

fun game my only complaint is it seems near impossible to win when you spawn towards the back so maybe if you could force spawn the player towards the front it would feel better but then again then there is little challenge.
