Mother Earth: Failed Planet by NoahRo

[raw]
made by NoahRo for LD 40 (JAM)

The more people there are, the worse the planet is doing.

#### And also the worse the game laggs.

Gameplay

You are Mother Earth and you have a disease: Humans
Try to rid yourself of the infestation with Tornadoes and Earthquakes.

Tornadoes can be activated in the top right corner; the arrows indicate the width of the tornado.
They are great for killing all humans who are in the area.

Earthquakes are triggered by clicking on the gray bars at the bottom.
They can destroy buildings which are spawned by groups of humans.

Controls

| Key | Action | | ----------------------------- | --------------------- | | A, H, leftarrow | move camera left | | D, L, rightarrow | move camera right | | Q | quit the game | Otherwise use the mouse to click on the above mentioned sections.

Win / Lose conditions

There are win and lose conditions in the game, although triggering them is the difficult part.
The game is not balanced correctly at all.

Win condition

Kill all humans.

Lose condition

You lose when the map is filled with buildings (which will never happen, due to a bunch of issues).

Tools used

Development Info

The Game is written in Ruby version 2.4.2 using the Gosu game library. It should work with Ruby version 2.1.9 and up though.

Sadly we couldn't implemented all the features (and almost no textures) we had planned to, I still wanted to upload it though because it was our first Ludum Dare. We had a lot more plans for it but I wasn't able to implement it all, and my partner wasn't able to finish all the textures, so you mainly get placeholder textures.

I still had a lot of fun making this game.
Hopefully I can use what I have learned in this jam to create a better (and finished) product next time.

I hope at least some of you will have some fun fooling around with the (terrible) mechanics and watching those puny little humans get swirled around in tornadoes which will lead to their inevitable deaths.

Installation

I won !! 2120 years for killing them all ! x) The first time I played, I thought I had to save them all, but chen I understood, that became a way more fun ! x)
Graphism are not so good though and it lacks sounds. But the core of the game is well done ! Great job !

Keep coding :)

@magnega sorry about that, I changed the release name and forgot to update the link. It's fixed now.

I won in the 1400, killed about 63 people, destroyed maybe three or four buildings? I like the game for its simplicity, would have loved some tunes to go with it, and some 8bit-ish sound effects for the earthquakes and tornadoes. Also would have liked if the year timer would stop after the win condition is met for screen-shots of when you won!

Nice game, I like the way people flew around in the tornadoes.

Although I hoped to be able to change the width of my tornadoes and use 2x 1-sized ones in a row, rather than spending all my saved tornadoes. Had to try and get them with earthquakes :)

@elfcirynn and @skibisky thanks for the feedbacks!

We had a lot more plans, but we ran out of time very quickly.
I wrote all of the gameplay on the last day and didn't have time for polish (or textures or audio).
The tornadoes and earthquakes were quick and dirty implementations to have something to play at least.
I spent too much time with map generation, especially for a game that doesn't even have textures to go with it.

I've learned some stuff about game dev and time management and hope to release a better, more finished product next time! :)

The first link gives a 404, the executable+source code link immediately sets off my antivirus program. So I'm afraid I couldn't try the game.

@bificommander I've updated the link in the description. Windows blocks executables from unknown/untrusted sources, I don't know how to make my executable "trusted". The source code is available on github, so if you're afraid of malicious code, you can scan through the source. So if you want to run the game you'll have to ignore your antivirus program or manually install Ruby and run the code directly with the interpreter, but it's not really worth the trouble anyway :P
