Adrift by Brendan Engelman

adriftscreenshot2.png Your name is Allen Wrigley, mission specialist aboard the Apex II Space Station. When the previous crew of the station disappeared with no explanation, you and two others were sent to determine what had transpired on the station. An asteroid collision has left your team adrift in space without a source of power or an escape vehicle, and now another strange occurrence has left both your fellow crew members dead. Your are now completely alone...

Or are you?

Rebuild your spacecraft and escape the station while conserving power and avoiding the... "thing," or perish alone in space!

Gameplay notes:

Use WASD to move, and Q and E to ascend/descend.

The door at the start stays locked until you read the opening dialogue (use enter to move through dialogue).

Doors will keep the alien from moving between rooms, except for the door to the command module, which must be sealed using a button to keep the alien out. Sealing the door uses power, so only seal the door if you can hear that the alien is right outside the module.

A banging sound cue will alert you when the alien enters the vents. From the vents, it can attack you directly in your command module, but you can use the ventilation controls in the module across from the command module to turn off the vents. The alien will then immediately exit the ventilation.

This game was created using Unity, Paint.net, Sketchup, and Audacity. This was my first game jam, my first time creating a 3D game, and my first time using Unity... I think it turned out pretty well, considering the circumstances. I realize that this game has a name similar to the game "Adr1ft," which is also a space survival game with a similar premise, but I actually didn't know it existed until after I uploaded my game :p. I hope you have fun playing :)

Execution failed on Windows, saying "There should be 'adrift_Data' folder next to the executable"

Yes, you need to include the unity data folder provided when you made the build.

As others have said, all you have up there is the Adrift.exe, no supporting data, so the game can't be run.![error.png](///raw/c66/z/7fcc.png)

I'm guessing you're having a good sleep after the event. Looking forward to playing when you upload the files to play.

Thanks for all your comments, guys. This was my first time using unity, so I didn't realize I needed the data folder. I've updated the build on game jolt so it should be working now

This looked and sounded good. Unfortunately I couldn't play beyond the opening, since the game wouldn't let me into 'command' to see Commander Sheffield. (There was a door with a prompt but it didn't do anything on right-click or left-click.)

Good effort though!

@winterslice I'm sorry to hear that :(
The door only opens if the opening dialogue has been read through completely, had you read through all the dialogue, including all the control explanations?

For anyone wondering, the first door won't open until the dialogue is finished. Also you can press Q/E to float up/down.

I'm not sure what sealing the door is supposed to do though, it doesn't seem to actually, er, keep anything out. My game always ends while I'm typing at the command console.

Love the sound design though, and listening through the doors adds something special to the atmosphere.

Oh.... the sound of alien! It scared the hell out of me. Definitely a good entry! Storytelling one. I really like it.

I had a hard time understanding what I was meant to do, and seeing where I was going in a few areas of the station was a challenge. The idea of listening through the doors really increased the tension and made the feeling a lot better.

Love the game, I would disable the text in the beginning if you're playing again. Great game!

This was like watching doom the movie - terrifying. Gameplay-wise its really well made, hope you will work on this in the future (if you would like to polish this game after LD and need help with unity lemme know)

@brendan-engelman There was nothing left on the screen from the opening dialogue. I did use RMB to skip some of it, because it was very slow to change. Maybe that caused a bug?

@winterslice No, skipping dialogue shouldn't affect the door opening. However, enter is the key to skip dialogue, not RMB - did you map your controls differently from the default settings? Because that would make it so that you need to use a different key to open the door. Other than that, I'm not sure what could've happened.

This was quite a tense game, and I was really into the sci fi vibes it gave. The story reminded me of the movie that came out earlier this year called Life which I thought was wicked! A couple of things to consider - For some reason it kept getting flagged by my antivirus (Avast)?? And gameplay wise only a couple of things, I think the player collider should be a lot smaller as I found myself running into doors as I was going back and forth to turn the ventilation on and off; and I also would have loved it if the 'thing' presented a bit more of a threat. Still a great game, I had heaps of fun playing it! Awesome job!

Nice music! Loved the hearing through doors mechanic! One suggestion: Placing the gui elements in one place can help you read what´s happening on the screen easier!

@brendan-engelman No, RMB skipped it by default, I didn't change a thing!

Don't know why or what is wrong (I suppose some problem with resolution handling) but I was unable to get out of the main menu - I could't click anything.

The music was quite atmospheric, but the story telling felt a bit lengthy with the bottom subtitle mechanic, but otherwise it was quite good

Good game! It definitely played to the tension-horror. The story was well-written. I like how you portrayed that alien thing. I couldn't beat the game because it attacked me and the first time I ran out of power/oxygen before I could execute all the commands. There were a lot of commands. The music was central to the feeling of horror.
