Cruise & Co. by Blinkenlights

[raw]
made by Blinkenlights for LD 41 (JAM)

Manage your children while speeding! The dream of any masochistic human! See the Jam version for actual functionality! (Play with sound, it helps a lot.)

Screenshot from 2018-04-23 03-51-47.png

Combining the genres Casual Racing/Dodging with Choice (LD41), we come across a businessman up to the ears with stress and multitasking. How far will he make it? Probably not further than 100MPH Controls: 'Ctrl' is start & pause (didn't pick 'Esc' for all the full-screen users) 'w'/'up' & 's'/'down' to steer the car 'a'/'left' & 'd'/'right' to choose a response

Art, Fonts, Coding and Voice-over by myself. Using Unity, GIMP, Audacity & Atom.

As this is my first proper game, any and all feedback would be highly appreciated. I would also like to hear any tips or potential improvements you might have.

I liked playing this game. The controls respond nicely and it looks good. It's really challenging though and I kept mixing up the keys to steer and to talk to the kids. Got lucky on my last run and got a high score of 107 MPH because the kids were quit for a long time and I could focus on the driving.

Wow, except from a few minor bugs this was very well polished :) There is a lot of time in between crashing and starting a new round, so that gets annoying after a while. All in all I would say this is a really good game!

Enjoyed playing the game. The combination keeps you on your toes. It did seem that occasionally, I would find myself flying straight towards a car in each lane that overlap horizontally so there is no possible way through. Other than that issue which made it feel like a force lose when I was doing well, it was a great game.

Welcome to Ludum Dare by the way!

So i was just trying to have a relaxing drive with my family on our way to visit my rich aunt who's intermittence i depend on to make it through next month and suddenly i crashed, but then, it seems like it was all a dream, and then i crashed again, and again, and then this happened

![asdsad.PNG](///raw/37d/e/z/1285e.png)

Well, the game is definitely interesting but i really wasn't able to make it too far without crashing my car nor did i get to experience what happened if my "jerk" got all the way up, in any case, cool game :) great work. also, hello sleepy i am dad xD.
🎤 Blinkenlights
24. Apr 2018 · 00:55 UTC
Originally there weren't any lorries, so you actually had enough space to squeeze between paralell cars.
@Kichex It's not you, it's a feature for added replayability! (I just couldn't get the difficulty right.)
@James-Dunlap I know, RNG. Thank you!
@Q-ro Hahahahaha, thanks! Reloading usually helps, the Jerk actually goes down for bad answers and seconds passed (incrasing the likelyhood of getting a "Can I open my door?" or "Daddy look!" swerve), whereas good answers reduce the risk. (Boring) The difficulty is way too high, see the top half of this comment. Glad you enjoyed it!

Hey, I broke your game lol.

I'm not sure if you saw, but I played your game on my stream tonight https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames

I figured out that if you drive at the very top of the screen you don't really run into enemies, and you can get going over 100 mph.

I did like the combination of genres.

The game is a lot of fun!

**Positive**
- I like your voice acting and the sound.
- I like the realization, the idea and the combination of these two genres
- It makes fun

**Negative**
- Maybe it is a little bit to hard in the beginning. I don't came very far. And it was a little bit frustrating.
- The font is a little bit hard to read.

**Little bug**
- after the 4th restart the game freezes in the "cardriving" scene

Nice and solid entry!

Man I loved this game, its too real, fantastic! Great voice work! I have to agree with @Rahtainka tho, the game is a little bit hard right from the beginning, which is not necessarily a bad thing, the controls work great, the car handles a little too heavy maybe... The jam version actually works quite well, but it's still ridiculously hard. The crashing physics are satisfying, which somewhat lessens the frustration. I liked the voice acting and the jokes quite a lot, but I would have loved to hear more of it before dying. Maybe being able to slow down and in turn getting more annoying comments would be an option to consider? Anyway, after playing this I am both amused and dad.

Haha, that was fun. Played the Jam version and somehow cheesed it with the red lane. Cars didn't spawn there so sat there enjoying the conversation with the kids. Felt like a normal road trip, lol.

The controls were solid but the car itself was super heavy, so getting some tight escapes was tough.
Otherwise it was great. Good job!

@phi Hi dad! Certainly an interesting concept, I'll fiddle around with that.
@gi11 *No* cars spawned there? Well lucky you, there should be a 1/100 chance each time a car is spawned that it gets put on that stretch of road. Or I messed something up. Or the children sabotaged it. I plan on making the steering more responsive, but I guess until then, it's just another expensive car with heavy gold plating underneath. Glad you enjoyed!

Googd job with this!

Perhaps it would be nice if the car would be able to turn faster (to make a tight scapes with the cars). And there is in some points where cars spawn perhaps ¿so close?

Anyway, I feel in the most part of the gameplay that I can avoid the cars and answer the childs but I dont feel childrens annoying in the gameplay (perhaps they could affect on the controls of the car?)

It's a solid jam submission.

Good job!

28. Apr 2018 · 16:41 UTC
@Ethereal-Psyche-Games The lower your Jerk is, the more likely the children will make you swerve. I admit the swerving isn't very strong when it's there, but it's there nevertheless. I plan on making the steering tighter, but I just ran out of time (as you do). Glad you enjoyed!

This is a fun little idea. I really like the voice acting. I wish there weren't so many cars so close to each other so soon. It seems like I always end up being in between a rock and a hard place since there's no speed control and only 3 lanes. Being your first proper game, though; very impressive! It's very well put together.
🎤 Blinkenlights
01. May 2018 · 20:14 UTC
@Aim Thanks, was a lot of fun! I didn't get to fiddle around with the RNG or anything around it, so the difficulty is very badly managed I'm afraid. But that was mainly because I was trying to get to grips with things like "leftChoice.transform.Find('Line2').gameObject.GetComponent<UnityEngine.UI.Text>().text" XD

### What I loved
- love voice acting in the game wish more games did this
- the conversations were great
- car turning felt good

### :thought_balloon: My Thoughts
- try cleaning up your audio recording with audacity it's easy and makes the game sound much more professional, also have all the sound files be faded in and out at the ends to remove that popping noise from files.
- I found some times where it looked like 3 cars in a row and it was impossible to get out of the way

Geez Daddy, have you not heard of slowing down or hitting the brakes?

This was quite an enjoyable, but quick game. I didn't really go over 75 MPH, or if I did, I never acquired a screenshot as proof. I loved the dialogue, and when Dad jokes are paired with actual voices doing the talking, it's such a perfect match that I can't help but be amused. What I really like about the voice acting is that even though I can tell it's the same person doing the voices, the tone and inflection suggest different characters, making them a bit more recognizable from each other.

I do agree with some of the other comments that the font was overall pretty hard to read. Combined with the fast paced gameplay, I often had to quickly guess match because I couldn't quite pick out what the choices were. That, however, did make it kind of fun, as even choosing the general nudge towards the answers would lead to you saying something I should have expected, but didn't. And that was kind of funny.

I also noticed that sometimes, the game would easily lose focus whenever I started a new game - the steering controls would cause me to scroll down the entire page rather than steer in the game. Strangely enough, the times those happened, I didn't actually run into any cars, so phew. :relieved:

One thing I did find quite annoying was that it was pretty easy to die in the game, but there wasn't really a fast enough respawn. I would have liked it if, when you hit the "Ctrl" key, that the game just automatically starts you from the actual game itself rather than going back to the titlescreen, which will make it more engaging for players to immediately start replaying the game the moment they die. Then, you could perhaps have another key that brings up the instructions/intro again in case people need to reference them again.

The idea was very funny, and I think the fact that you have "Dad road trip" dialogue combined with somewhat chaotic gameplay, which in turn affects how well you drive, there is a really nice formula here for a humourous, fast paced game.

13. May 2018 · 05:49 UTC
Cool idea! I found that in general, there was far too much RNG to feel as if I could realistically survive for very long, but with some balance changes I could see this being pretty fun.

Some other minor criticism:
- The audio starts/ends are pretty noticeable and abrubt right now; having some background audio and putting the dialogue through a noise reduction pass could help fix that.
- Occasionally the restart would break the game (it would start, but the car wouldn't move and there were no other vehicles); I'd have to do a full refresh of the page to fix it
- Given how difficult it is, having a couple hits of tolerance before losing the game would be nice

Having said that, this is really impressive for a first proper attempt at a game. Well done!
