DvZ by TRGoodhue

[raw]
made by TRGoodhue for LD 40 (JAM)

This is DvZ, it stands for "Dave versus Zombies". You play Dave, you must fend off the waves of zombies coming towards you, the waves get bigger and bigger the more time goes on. The way that the theme ties into the all, is because: The more XP you have at that moment, the more health the zombies have, you need XP to level up your gun though, but don't worry, their health resets back down to 100, every time your gun levels up, and then, the cycle starts all over again!

There are currently 10 guns. 1. Pistol 2. SMG 3. Sniper 4. Thompson 5. Scar-H 6. M1 Garand 7. Neon Pistol 8. Uzi 9. Neon Thompson 10. Mini-Gun

I do plan on updating this even after LD, so that I can make it more of a complete game!

How to Play

Controls: WASD to move, move mouse to aim, LMB to shoot, Space to jump. Waves: The amount of zombies per wave, starts of as 4, and grows by 4 every time a new wave starts. You will also heal 1 HP every wave you survive.

XP: The number underneath the XP number, is how much XP you need to level up your gun.

Good work! You've got a lot of space on the screen that you don't seem to be using, though, since there's only one level of platforms to jump to. I'd suggest some way to use all of that space, either by making your HUD bigger or extending gameplay into those regions. Still a pretty good effort all the same!

I think this would work better as a top-down game or if there was more room to move. I didn't have much room to shoot the zombies after the first wave.

Nice job! I like the graphics and the style of the game. One problem I had was that death seemed inevitable after some time, as there was nowhere to go to dodge the zombies. The platforming engine had some problems too, but otherwise I enjoyed myself.

This was a nice game, with a good concept. The controls were simple, the premise too. However death was imminent with the increase of the zombie number.

The splatter animation was really nice, it remembered me of the splatter animation on an old game called Bio Menace.

I do think that the game doesn't have much connection to the theme, as the connection "the more time you have the worse it is" is not really clear here as you don't have time, time is spent. Also, the background music is a little off from the game theme (too bubbly).

But overall it was enjoyable, good work :)

Weapon changing mechanic is interesting (even though I haven't maoved past weapon 4). However transition from SMG to Sniper and then to autgun is i bit disorientating as you have to quickly switch tactics to really opposite ones.

Also weapon variety is a bit low... All the differences between SMG and Thompson seem to be erased by Zs having more HP now.

Mixing in odditional features like recoil, splash damage, knockback on enemies etc would make a game more interesting.

Also some hint to what would the next weapon be and how soon it would kick in, would be helpful

Nice start to a cool shootem! Liked how the guns change up as you go - would have been nifty to announce the levelup more in the game.
To mix things up a bit a few more platforms would perhaps also add some diversity / tactics, or things like headshots doing more dmg or giving more XP.

Unfortunately I only got up to the sniper, I am curious how the other guns work. :)
