Tank Gauntlet: Control vs Power by gamepopper

[raw]
made by gamepopper for LD 43 (COMPO)

LD43-00007.gif

Fight off the red tanks with your own tank through the gauntlet for as long as possible, either by firing its cannon or piercing the metal with a giant knife. The red tanks can vary in strength, but for you it's two strikes and your out. You might find your tank isn't strong enough, so what you can do is sacrifice your tank's controls (weapons or movement) for a speed or attack boost.

In the main mode, you need to survive five levels including a boss. Destroying 20 tanks will progress you to the next level. In endless mode, there is no boss, so you go on until you are destroyed.

Controls (Keyboard or Gamepad): ```

| Keyboard | Gamepad

Run | A & D / Left & Right | Left Stick / D-Pad
Jump | W / Up | Left Stick Up / D-Pad Up Jump Down | S / Down | Left Stick Down / D-Pad Down Gun | Z | X Knife | X | A Jump | C | B Reset Level | R | A Start/Set Functions | Return | Start Back to Title Menu | Space | Back

```
All Developed by Gamepopper. Programmed in C++ using SFML and my own engine, Vigilante. Graphics done with Piskell and Photoshop. Music created in cgMusic with additional editing in LMMS. Sound effects were generated in BFXR and mixed in Audacity.
Minor Update: * The control options will now remain the same when you retry from the game, previously it would reset to all controls enabled. * Linux build is added, but because it was built and tested through a VM it needs testing on proper hardware.
I love how flexible this theme was! People thought of all sorts of ideas for this, and your game pulls off the "sacrifice of mechanics" interpretation of the theme very well. Very retro, in both sound effects and simplified pixel style. Not a bad game by any means- would've sold very well on NES and it was made in a weekend.
Very interesting concept, But I guess it would be more interesting if we have to choose a certain number of skills to enable. because if I disable everything for mobility I wouldn't be able to move. :D Had some laughs playing this. Great Job
That was fun !, reminded me a little of Joust. It would be nice if the tank config persisted across restarts.
That's nice! There are several combinations that can almost trivialize the first level but the second is very, very hard. I enjoyed it a lot.
I feel that 20 kills is a bit too much though.
Bonus points for knife tank.
Good game! The Atari Pixel art mood is very cool!!! I like a lot of the config choice in the beginning, creating a set of abilities to your tank.
Pretty interesting, though I couldn't get past the 2nd round. There were some nice gains when you realize the level wraps around both vertically and horizontally, and it becomes about knowing what the best placement for yourself is in the level. I think it is a bit too hard for me right now, perhaps if you could get more power on the weapons. I could see something like that where you also have a higher tradeoff (like always moving or unintended movement, etc). nice job!
Challenging game! I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/QGU5NZBTfXo
Seriously neat idea, and quite addictive. I mostly tried using only jump/left/fire and it seemed doable, but I only made it to level 3 once. I refused to make it any easier for myself :D
nice screenshakes! Kinda too hard for me sometimes, but I guess I just suck too much in this kind of game, so great entry anyway.
Awesome game, good challenge! I went only right/fire/melee and it worked pretty well. I like the range of playstyle available even though it's fairly simple. It's a well designed game.:)
I like the theme integration. It was way too hard for me tho. Maybe what I would do is make you able to change your controls after every level to adapt to it (I wasn't able to do that at least) and maybe even restart at that level, but maybe I just suck at it.
Theme well used. It all works well and feels good to play. It feels complete for its scale. It gets a bit samey but solid entry.
