ld43meleemedium.gif

Twin-stick Arcade Melee, with a dash of Demon Pong. You're huge, the enemies are tiny, so have fun stomping around and knocking them all the hell over the map. Sacrifice the Grand Vizier of the house that has lost your favor, or just take the head of the winner because you're a demon that's what demons do.

Cultists get progressively more devout and come up with ever greater methods of trying to get past you and throw themselves into lava so that they can die for you. But don't let your guard down, if they expose you as a false idol then they will die but in a different way which somehow is less good. Or bad.

Controls

Left Stick / WASD : Move

Right Stick / Arrows : Aim/rotate

Fire / Space,Z,X : Hold to bring up your shield and charge your hammer.

When you release the fire button when the hammer is charged, you'll smash your hammer down knocking enemies back. If enemies touch your shield, you will drink their souls. Drink 5 souls and you can throw your hammer, killing enemies for points. Bounce your hammer back repeatedly to increase the score multiplier.

At the end of every wave, select one House for sacrifice. They will grow in their passion to jump in the lava, and you will get a reward.

Crazy demon pong! I died when the tanks unexpectedly showed up. Who let those tanks into hell?

Really fun game, I wish that for rotating the character when using PC controls it used the mouse location instead of the arrow keys, but I had a blast playing it and the particles, graphics, and gameplay all mixed very well.

PS: I really enjoyed watching your stream throughout the process. Today, the last day of the Jam, it felt like something was missing. I'll have to stop by again.

The gameplay was a lot of fun. Graphics ok, Sound simple. Loved the neverseenbefore-feature: If you die, see your score and you play again, that you will take your old score and start from there. Very nice feature! Eh ... yes. Anyway. I was stuck in wave 4 once. Dont know what happend there. But everyone was gone, but the end-stage-panel was not triggered. Well done Jim!

I like this idea, it felt like an arcade game I'd use to kill a few hours online but still fit the theme. Nicely done!

Really cool! I played this game on stream, if you're interested in a live reaction! https://www.twitch.tv/videos/345179013 (1 hour 18 minutes in). I also got the current high score, though I suspect it won't last...

@benburgh Thanks for streaming it! I see that wasd/arrows weren't moving you around during the menu, that's messed up. I'll look into it.

Hey, great job, Jim!!! The character feels really powerful, especially throwing the hammer around and all manner of enemies being trashed by it. Well done as always!

Nice idea. It's looks good, but the control makes me tremble. WASD + mouse would be much better. Played it on keyboard, not gamepad.
And i saw the menu and some kind of arrow after mission, but have no idea how to control, wasd and arrows does not work.

- The throwing axe mechanic is pretty impressive!
- The graphics are nothing to laugh at either.
- Player going on the X axis and being able to turn 360° feels kind of a waste, but I appreciate the possibility.

Good game, well done!

Great arcadey action with imaginative mechanics. This makes pong/breakout much more interesting! I also had the menu wasd issue, and would have preferred M+KB, but then hooked up the gamepad and all was good.

Very satisfying to throw and bounce the hammer around. I wish the buttons for the shield and the hammer were separate though.

Very solid arcady game. Good job.

This game is a cool idea. I like the concept and execution but it would have suited control pad so much better. Nice job though!

This is really catchy and complete for a compo game. I like it. My one suggestion is that there should be more feedback that the hammer is ready to throw. It shows when it's powered up but I think I just have to remember to hold it for a few seconds before it can be thrown. Good work overall!

This is one of the most addictive games I have played so far.

The visual and audio effects play very well together and it's a joy to play.

I wasn't entirely sure when I die, I assume it's after three hits, so that could have been communicated better by adding a lives indicator. The rest of the game is communicated very well, though, so it is immediately clear what this is about, that you collect souls to enable the shot, how the hammer windup mechanics work and so on, great job!

I also love the upgrades and the decisions that go with them. This leaves a lot of experimentation to get a particularly good high score. The score board adds so much to the experience, it's such a pity that the score does not reset upon dying. I would have loved to try getting to the top, but it feels like cheating now, so I quit. I think fixing this minor bug is allowed as per LD rules and you could reset the scoreboard to make it fair again. Should you do that, shoot me a message and I'll definitely play the game again to see how far I can get.

It's a very good entry, and I had a lot of fun!
