Sneaky by The_Icy_One

[raw]
made by The_Icy_One for LD 41 (COMPO)

Game is unfinished but definitely playable, although nowhere near the outlandish thing I planned for just 48 hours ago. I also completely messed up the theme, I was going for an arcade-style stealth game, but I think what I have is closer to a bullet hell with fewer bullets.

Sneak past the scary blue things and try to reach the stairs. Use the arrow keys to control your black dot thing, and get as far as possible. If the blue things see you, they'll give chase, but they really aren't that smart. The stairs always happen to be in the bottom right, as far from you as possible. How convenient.

Maybe you could go for a high score! They really aren't worth much though, the game doesn't even track them yet. Here's mine, anyway. My high score in the Ludum Dare release.

Made with Godot engine, with textures made in paint.net and sounds on beepbox.co

In my defense, I was learning absolutely everything from scratch here and had a pretty hefty chunk of distractions ;)

Does not start for me. Windows shows in a flash and closes right away.

You listed macOS and HTML5 links but there only seems to be builds for Windows and Linux.

Same for me. Game doesn't load. The window for it briefly appears and then disappears straight away.

Hope you can fix it. It doesn't matter that you think your game is unfinished, it would still be awesome to play it and you deserve it for the effort you put in!

Also doesn't start for me. The error is "Error: Could not load game path '.'."

Sounds like you may have missed some game files or a map which should've been packed with the game. Poke me when you fixed it and I'll definetly give it a whirl.

I tried to play your game, but it crashes immediately after clicking it. IDK why!

Weird, the thing was working last night. I'll have a look and fix the launch if possible.

@gemberkoekje I think the linux build should be functional now, not certain about the others.

Game started fine for me! My score was 18100 though I suspect I could have achieved more fairly easily.

With a little more level design this could have been an interesting little game, as it is though there isn't a lot to it, I'd like to know more about what you had initially intended! certainly a good start especially considering you were learning as you went!

Hi there - this loaded fine for me. Congrats on submitting even if unfinished - to be honest I am pretty sure every game here is unfinished :) It's a pretty basic avoid the baddies game, but it works and doesn't crash. One thing I couldn't figure out is how the scoring worked. I am guessing it's based on time or distance moved but not entirely sure.

@morphine It's actually twofold, a small amount from time that rises quickly as you go up in the levels, and a large portion from completing the levels which falls off as more and more levels are completed.

@The_Icy_One very clever - I love hidden mechanics like that which aren't necessarily explained

Works now! Fun and simple game. The only thing I felt was really missing was a bit more feedback. A little exclamationmark when the enemies see you. A little circle or cone to have an indication when the enemies would react. Little things like that could really make this even more fun. Still, thanks for the game!

@gemberkoekje I was actually working on both of those, but my schedule got the better of me. Fortunately, the skeleton of the code and some of the effects are lying around so they'll be easy to add later.

Pretty interesting game, I think the audio made it good for me.

a good base to build a stealth game I think. The mechanics seemed solid enough but there was no real reward for being stealthy vs just running for the exit.

@bentglasstube You're certainly right there, that'll be one of my main aims when I get back to working on this.
