Ohh that actually turned out pretty fun. The music is fitting, I really like the graphics and while slightly glitchy if you get hit in certain places, I don't think there's any gamebreaking issues either. Fun gameplay overall. (who put all those ropes there?!)

As for the theme, if I didn't know what your mixed genres were I don't know if I could've figured it out... XD I think they mix a little too easily. But well, this years theme does seem a bit difficult to meet.

@Iak In the unreleased lore of the game, John Treavor went into the temple with several partymemebers and him used this exact route too. They were the ones leaving the ropes. You may guess what happenend to them all...

and yes...the theme's execution is not that great here. But concidering we did something good now I don't even mind.

I made it out! Wooooooooooo! I like the fact you didn't overly punish the player for getting hit. Some game designers would have flashed up a huge **GAME OVER** screen as soon as something touched you and that would have been that, but I prefered the drop down and the ability to rescue yourself. I genuinely enjoyed playing it and figuring out the routes.

Which bit of making it did you enjoy most?

@Temmy Glad you liked it! Guess you..learned the ropes easily eh? : D
As the artist I enjoyed making the sprites :)

I liked the graphics, the gameplay was a bit 'eh' but that's absolutely down to personal preference. Nice work regardless!

@Iak thanks xD yeah the game genres mixed way too easily xD i did not expect this while brainstorming... it is a super hard theme this time, so i'm not expecting that high of a rating on "theme" but I hope all other ratings will be pretty high. I think the game turned out pretty fun :v:

@temmy yeah, i was debating between instant death and ability to regrab, we thoguht abotu having hit points and did have them at first but then both me and @Rik_Thunder decided on the same thing, don't need HP and re-grabbing ropes while falling should be a thing, so player can kind of save themselves.
I think most enjoyable thing to me was making the ropes and switching between ropes and all animations work right. actually thanks to @Iak he helped me figure out how to detect ropes and switch between them nicely and smoothly by just giving me 1 simple idea I didn't think of xD

@Memel06 hey! thanks a lot and good job making it to the top :D I'd tell you about an easier way but then people who haven't played might read comments and see it so :spy: nope xD haha but I tried to make it not too challenging and the sir monkey is the best thing ever isn't it? :D Rik did an incredible job with arts in this game

@gemberkoekje Rik is amazing at graphics and animations for games xD truly loved it! The winning pose was my fav i think :D As far as gameplay goes, I'm sorry to hear that it was 'eh' to you, could you please share what you disliked the most about the game? Thanks

Really cute and simple game! I enjoyed it a lot :)
The sprites are really adorable and the mechanics are easy to learn. As someone above mentioned I really like how getting hit isn't very punishing (though falling far nearly gave me a heart attack a couple times haha!)
Great submission, well done!

+1 for re-grabbing ropes.

I enjoyed this a fair bit. The art was my favourite aspect, but I guess if I had to pick a 'least favourite' aspect, it would be that the gameplay could do with a little more balancing. I felt like I should've died way more than I did... Unless I'm just amazing at your game, which seems very unlikely. Great game and good work!

Definetly much fun to play, I liked the concept of finding the right ropes and the difference between enemies and threats. Just the helicopter boss disappeared after I reached it and fell down a long part of the level, but survived. After reaching its original spawn point, he was gone.

@Darby Costello well, I think the hit box is still messed up and if that would have been right, the game would have been even easier : P
but yes. i see what you mean

First Ludum Dare game that I'm complete. It was very fun. Strange but cute animation of the character. Jump from rope to rope remind me some Hajume no Ippo main character. I don't know why =) And I LOVE games that I can complete from start to finish. GG!

Pretty decent game, it would be good if most of the ropes didn't lead to a dead end, sometimes there's a bug where my character can not move after a fall. good job either way

The game is fun enough that I completed it. As some have mentioned it's hard to tell what the mixed genres are. Also as someone else said, it's nice that getting hit doesn't totally reset the game or anything. Though I did hit one chain of constant rocks/bananas/birds that sent me half way down the map.

The music is simple, but suitable. The art is adequate, but could be better in some areas. The background really stands out as needing the most improvement. It's actually kind of funny how the guy's butt swings back and forth as he climbs. It might just be that everything is so small it's hard to see how nice some of the artwork is.

Anyways nice entry, I enjoyed playing!

A fairly simplistic game...

I mostly took a path on the left and for a better half of the ascent is was just climbing one rope without even the ability to move sideways.

Also the monkey-poop joke is... not to my taste.

28. Apr 2018 · 07:42 UTC
@TheCrittersCove Truth. I do suck at backgrounds. struggled with a few designs..ended up using..this one. xD
and yes, the butt is very intentional : D
thank you

@Hilvon I already changed it to bananas because my partner insisted...xD

and yeah the path left is the safest one. that's the first one i took while playtesting aswell

Nice graphics and I specially liked the way John Trevor switched from rope to rope.
Didn't get what genres you combine.
Keep on!

This game is a great stuff, it make me happy. I love the music and graphics.

but I don't know what can the boss do, it just disappeared when I fell off and climbed up again:)

29. Apr 2018 · 04:05 UTC
Hmm... not sure about the hint on staying in the middle. I didn't read the hint and pretty much stayed to the left the entire time and by passed a lot of obstacles, like the monkey boss, until nearing the end, when I saw the goal was in the middle, then I just went back down a bit to go across. Still a fun game though :)

30. Apr 2018 · 07:56 UTC
@paddywhq the boss was just there to molest you a little bit while you climb, he was timed so he flew off after some time after spawning xD i think i set him to about 30 or 35 seconds.

@Random-thoughts yeah xD the hint was meant to make people want to stay on middle :P where it's harder.
I should've removed the left path D:

This game was very fun. I enjoyed it a lot and I think you managed to balance the difficulty quite well. Maybe having multiple options for different difficulties in the menu would be an idea, but hard to be able to pull that off with so little time.

The gameplay was quite straight forward, but I really wanted to climb up on platforms and be able to jump off them to other ropes. That would be a very nice mechanic to have. Although maybe it was a deliberate choice because of technical details or difficulty balance of the game.

Overall, really well made game. I enjoyed playing around with all the different game mechanics

Out of curiosity, I looked up what "Kinbaku" meant. I don't see how it really applies to this situation...
🎤 vkmicro
01. May 2018 · 03:10 UTC
@niterich AHAHAHAHAHAHAH :D I'm sorry that you had to clear your browsing history :D hahahahahah lmao

Well xD look up DANMAKU "Danmaku (弾幕, "bullet curtain" or "curtain fire"), also known as "Bullet Hell" in English, is a Japanese term for "barrage", as in a barrage of bullets"

whereas KINBAKU means "bind tightly" literally, and relates to ropes.

now, the boss, the monkey boss, has a bullet hell'ish boss mechanics, flying and shooting all the time. I've nerfed him heavy and didn't have time to implement fancy bullet patterns but that's the thing xD

And since we kind of tried to combine bullet hell DANMAKU and ROPES climbing, we thought that it'd be funny to name the game Kinbaku.

The ability to regrab the ropes when you get hit successfully makes it not too punishing, but your first time to a certain area feels like some trial and error is required.

I really like that your credits screen at the end is interactive, that little extra bit of polish is noticeable.
🎤 vkmicro
01. May 2018 · 15:46 UTC
@ultrarat yeah, some people like that the game isn't very punishing, others don't. Can't please everyone. I could've easily made this 1 of the hardest games by adding more obstacles and confusing routes, but decided against it as I was trying to design a fun and quick gameplay not a rage inducing one. Originally thought to have HP and not have re-grab mechanics but decided against both of those pretty quickly and so I made it less punishing xD

What genres did you combine? It's a pretty one-dimensional climbing game.

I enjoyed it though. There was definitely a variety of challenges to overcome, and it ramped up in difficulty pretty nicely. I got stuck around 145m tho. Couldn't advance further without significantly backtracking.

Didn't seem like there was a way to die? Getting hit by stuff just knocks you back, until you grab a rope.

It would have been more fun if there were power-ups that made you able to fight back temporarily. Or a very limited use weapon of some kind.

I really liked the music, I thought it fit the game well and helped establish an adventure-y mood.
🎤 vkmicro
10. May 2018 · 18:58 UTC
@csanyk we aimed for Bullet hell x adventure type of thing xD but well, the only thign of bullet hell is the sir monkey in coco-chopper which may people skipped by climbing on the left xDDD

additionally. yeah, we experimented with instant death and HP and stuff and decided against both of those as instant death would be annoying having to re-do everything to get to the end and I really wanted people to be able to finish the game quickly without closing it after dying once or twice... since my previous games didn't really have an end, I wanted this 1 to be finishable and to be finished by most people who played it during the ludum dare.

Regarding fighting back, it wasn't really planned when we started and didn't have time to implement it anyways.

This game may work quite well with procedural generated content in the style of Doodle Jump or anything similar where you can go up endlessly and just get a score when you're hit. It was fun to play and graphics and sound crated a fitting mood, but without some form of death or real penalty was this game to easy. Nevertheless great Game.
