The Minstrel of the Kings by Jacoder23

[raw]
made by Jacoder23 for LD 41 (COMPO)

coverart.png

A game created for the LD 41 compo.

In the land of SONGLANDIA, there lives the minstrel who saved a kingdom.

A text-adventure rhythm game.

This is the link to the post-compo version. The original can be found below.

Instructions:

Whenever your music note/dash is over anything of the same green color, hit spacebar. For the text-adventure parts, use your mouse to click options and scroll for the long passages.

The game has a few jokes here and there but for the most part, it's mostly serious. I think. Note: That the rhythm game parts are somewhat lacking as getting the audio to sync took an incredible amount of time, and it only truly worked for the last part. Though the text-adventure parts are fine.

And I'm still quite happy with the result. Especially since I can finally sleep now...

Play time: 5 minutes.

Also, I'm having issues with fallback fonts for the WebGL version. Any tips from other Unity developers? It's the reason why I'm using an "l" instead of a music note since I promised myself everything would be text-based.

There were way too many files in the source code to upload to Github easily so I'm using MEGA. It's still going to take a while until the upload is done.

Looks great, and it's immersive. Good job

Nice, I have one comment: I think there is too much of reading for ludum dare :D

Nice cute game. You did a good job on the sound effects.

The controls are pretty neat. the music was really really loud and had to turn down my volume to continue. The scrolling on the text was confusing and took forever. Faster scrolling or auto scroll would help. sound effects are not bad and the space bar when matching up was interesting.

@kamtar Sorry! I kind of over did it with the introduction text. And there's also a glitch that caused the text to move much slower in the intro. :( Still it's not very long and all you really need to know is that there was curse, princess was stolen, etc.

@BlazeDragon I'm still a newbie at Unity, unfortunately. I noticed the weird scrolling but didn't have enough time to adjust it. :(

I didn't meant that as negative.. just something to consider when dealing with ludum dare crowd.. lot of people who want to just quickly test game and move on :/

@kamtar Nah, it's fine. I guess it does take a little time to get to the text-adventure part.

A nice game, I liked the writing and the twist at the end. The sound for hitting the correct note sounded like a 'you've done something wrong' sound to me, which confused me at first. :)

@Jacoder23 understandable, still an awesome submission and playable game. I too had issues working out some bugs in mine. Lol I was just glad mine finally became something that is "almost" play able :) You did great though keep up the good work.

I spent some time on the first page where I had to scroll to get the options - probably I should have read the instructions :-). Nevertheless, the scrolling, at least with my mouse's wheel, was quite cumbersome since it required a lot of turns to get the text to move. This is a pure technical issue which could be easily fixed for a post-compo-version. The music is nice, that was what I expected by your avatar. I like the combination of the two game mechanics, but the action parts where you had to hit space were a bit underrepresented and basically easy to complete.

I agree the scrolling is too slow. Also, it is a bit difficult to read with this font.

The only thing i would change is the first text because is too slow. Nice concept overall.
And thanks for making it html.

Really enjoyable, the music is beautiful and the dialogue good! Only downside is the scrolling :D But despite that, love it <3

Okay so the scrolling has apparently been an issue for a while, I haven't noticed it (probably since I'm on a trackpad or because my sensitivity is just really high) so I can only estimate how fast it needs to be. I yet again updated the post-compo version though so hopefully it'll be fast enough? I made it about 50% faster and 50% less elastic. Don't have a mouse on me unfortunately.

A cool idea and a good game overall. The presentation is simple but nice, and the two genres combined is a great idea. Too bad it's a bit short. But anyway, good work !

Really like the general atmosphere and the story! You should definitely develop the world out into a more choesive story, you can't leave us on a cliffhanger like that! It didn't seem to scroll all the way to the top when I clicked options though. The music was nice but as much as I love rhythm games I didn't really get the gist of yours. Would love to see it developed into something more cohesive with the story furthered. Nice!

Okay so for now, as I'm not satisfied with the game as it is now, I'm going to be working on the continuation soon (well... soon enough, there's another game jam that I'll be joining so I'm going to have to set this aside for now).

And I want to get some more detailed feedback from all of you so I made a quick feedback form that you can fill out if you have a few minutes to spare:

[**The form.**](https://goo.gl/forms/eyTmB063ln99R19J3)

It doesn't ask much about things that I could solve on my own (fixing the scrolling, normalizing the audio, fixing the effects, changing the font, extending the rhythm game mechanic, continuing the story, etc.) and is more about things I can't understand from my perspective (Why do some people like the writing and atmosphere? How come someone said I did good on the sound effects while another said that it confused him? How long is too long of a story? Should I continue this? Does the game feel too linear?).

And if you answer a few of the questions then I'll be more than happy enough to check out your game (doesn't have to be related to LD41 really) in return and give you some feedback. There will be a little form on the bottom where you'll be able to enter you game's URL.

The music audio and rhythm parts of the game were well done. I'm not the biggest text adventure fan but I would've like to see more of the rhythm parts in between the reading.

Very well written game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgRYnPldaL4
