Pixel Town by automatonvx

A Miniature Town Building Game
Grow your population to reach the scenario goals and fight off the mysterious local creatures.
Controls
Mouse - Click on buttons to select object to place and then left click to place. Right click to cancel. Cursor Arrows to Move camera around map.
Hints
Roads - These auto rotate (turn into the correct bit of road) when you put them down next to other bits of road.
The highlighted object you are about to place does not position itself exactly where the cursor is, for larger structures it might be a little bit to the side and above. In case its not obvious - you have to build mines on top of the strange gold bits of the map and farms on top of the 'flowers' that look more like blue crucifixes.
Each of the structures cost some money (but i forgot to tell the user how much anywhere).
Structure Costs:
Roads, Houses : 10 Archer Towers, Farms, Mines : 50
Was originally aiming for the compo but life got in the way so I didn't make it and submitted to the jam instead. All 'art', music, programming etc was done by myself in the 72 hour window, so compo in spirit at least!
Tools
- Unity
- Aseprite
- Tiled , Tiled2Unity
- Music - Reaper using Kontakt factory library and Rounds Synth
- sfx - bfxr
- Font - Silkscreen

Post submission Edit
Updated with a couple of bug fixes for the following issues:
* Game breaks if archer tower cleared
* Graphics glitch: arrows were colliding with gold/fertile ground (made it seem they were not working)
* Population not decreased when housing removed (without this player can get stuck with no money and no way to stop population sucking it all up so forced to restart)
* 'No money' feedback not displayed when trying to buy an item without enough money.
* Game continued to be playable after game over
Original version before this bug fix update is also still available on itchio site.

I really enjoyed this game, a management game with enemy wave coming to destroy your carefully build settlement.
The music is really fitting the art style too, making the full package consistent.
I would have love more building, more enemy and more map in the game, but this is a good thing, it just means I love it so much that I want more of it.
This is a game I can only recommend! Try it yourself and have fun :)
(You can see me playing this game for the first time on the vod https://youtu.be/34z-nBWKdEw?t=3h15m44s )
Simple but effective. The music and graphics are cool, as I said : simple but effective.
I know the time is a big matter but as @togis more content would be awesome. I hope you will have the time and the motivation to make it a full game :)
The thing I could reproach is that there are no information about the costs of buildings but maybe I missed something ?
I had fun playing this game, will come back to rate it ;)
Good work !
A detail I felt was missed - it wasn't clear to me how happiness was generated. I guessed that it was making sure monsters didn't get too close to your houses, so I put down a lot of archer towers. In hindsight, I'm not sure that was how that mechanic worked!
The game definitely needs more/ more visible information. Things like building costs and more visible indications for why something can't be built. I know that there is some text at the bottom explaining why, but when I first started playing I didn't immediately realize why my clicking had no effect. You could even add some sound to indicate a failure to build something.
I'm always blown away by the entries that can create a balanced strategy game over the course of a weekend.
Very cool. I wish it were easier to see what each individual building costs!
Nonetheless I'm a sucker for townbuilders and the addition of light towerdefense really made the game even better in my opinion. Honestly, and I don't say this often in gamejams, but this would be my kinda game to play on off-hours at home. With added buildings, polish and content ofcourse.
Either way, nice entry and getting through scenario 2 was just enough time to explore all the mechanics and still being excited about the game.
cheers~
Thanks everyone.
Well done!
I'll come back and defeat scenario 2 when I have more time to spend on it for sure!
Anyway: amazing work, well done!
Just one detail maybe, it would have been great to have something to remind you the goals.

It took me a wile to figure out how the roadbuilding works. I tried all buttons because I wanted to turn the road...
Anyway, great work! Neat mechanics, and solid gameplay!
Great job
Actually it plays so well, the only thing I'd like to see in the future are some UI improvements and more variety (monsters, buildings etc) that would allow for more scenarios. Of course that would need some balance work, but I'm talking about a longer development :)
Cheers mate, really solid job!
It certainly needs some balancing and probably a few other things. Until a couple of hours before the deadline it didn't even have any playable scenario though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
One thing: The creatures are just too cute, I don't want to kill them. :slight_frown:
Still really good job!
Scenario 2 map has a tricky enemies spawn on the left side, that was a bit unexpected.
Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/oeXQOvdnl8I
Thank you for the game!
Scenario 2 is a big leap in difficulty from scenario 1. If you don't go straight for a gold mine you're screwed!
Also, the building GUI could look nicer with some icons. Nonetheless,
I loved this entry a lot! I always liked strategy games, and this is a charming one!
Good job! Keep up the great work! :D
There are a few minor issues that I came across.
First, I didn't see you display the price of the buildings, e.g. in the form of a tool tip you already have in your game. That would help a lot with planning.
Second, I didn't find the placement of buildings very intuitive. Once you try and put something down, you get a message telling you why it didn't work. I think it may have been better to indicate this by using a red overlay over the building as that would allow for quick checking about where a building could be placed. The reason why it couldn't be placed in a certain spot would then be displayed next to the overlay.
Even so, I noticed that the position the building finally ends up being placed is a little different from the indicated position before placing it.
Another improvement in my mind would be to allow setting down buildings without being connected to roads. That would make organizing the city easier. If a building wasn't connected with a road, an icon would appear, marking it as inactive. That way you would retain the functionality you already have in place but the controls may be a bit more agreeable.
Overall you made a very charming simulation game that worked pretty well in my eyes and could be improved with a little tweaking.
The graphics are pretty cool, especially for the really limited amount of pixels you used.
There's some pretty nice music, and sound effects too, which is great.
Minor points:
- The roads took a lot of space.
- It was possible to get "stuck" in the beginning by not having money and also not having enough money to buy something.
- There was some help in-game, but some more would've been nice.
- A pause function would've been nice.
- It wasn't very clear what the maximum happiness was, if there was one.
- Having some more buildings would be cool!
- I liked that there were two scenarios, great to make that in the limited time of a jam.
Overall, lots of minor points that could have been better but no big ones in my opinion, so great entry!
(And oops sorry about my glitch in my game, I was a fool and made the game too big and ran out of time for general polish and bug finding, and thanks for enjoying me music! I used FL studio with a couple of plugins, as it's the quickest thing to make music on when jamming.)
This was really nice. Even the music fit the game really well. Only thing I would maybe complain a bit about was the placement of the bigger buildings. A surrounding box that shows up green/red or something like that, so you know where the mine and the farm will end up when you click.
