Space Bobble by japes

made by japes for LD 41 (JAM)

Capture.PNG

We've decided to not only combine 2 genres (space shooter, and puzzle), but to actually combine 2 classic games.
Presenting SPACE BOBBLE: a mashup of Puzzle Bobble and Space Invaders!

Controls: Mouse to aim & shoot, A/D to move your ship.

To survive, match up 3 or more bubbles of the same color to pop them. Pop the bubble with the monster inside and all other attached empty bubbles also pop.

Enjoy!!!

Fun! Based on one of my favorite arcade games. I wish there was a stronger integration of the Space Invaders elements though.

Nice idea! I think your game would benefit from a few background elements (and more audio), but overall, it is a strong and fun entry with a good mashup of genres!

Congrats!

Simple but effective, it seems hard to program though. It'd be more espectacular if you add some fresh sprites. Nice entry!

score 870 ;)
I would have perhaps liked less speedof the balls and 4 varieries.

Interesting mix, and congrats for entry!

Simple but fun. Definitely needs polish, but hey, that's the standard issue for most LD entries (mine included :D)

It was an interesting idea. It took me a min to get the hang of it but once I realized I can just shoot colors I don't want into space I got a lot better at it. The faster speed makes it pretty hectic in a good way :)

Love the idea for this one! I think if you tweak the pace and polish the graphics it would be an awesome game!

Fun game, nice idea. I very bad in these types of game and that was not different, it would be very nice if it could have bonus stones, or powers stones to get more health or clean the screen, also i liked the soundsm I wish there were more, Great entry.

The idea of this game is really great and well executed. I think the game would be more fun if the balls moved slower as I died rather quickly. If you expand upon the game I would love if you added music. I'm interested to see how this game evolves. Good work.

I liked it!

The idea is interesting and well served by the graphics. I missed some music track over the whole thing, but this is still a good entry without it.
I had fun playing it, and this is what is important.

Good work!

I really liked the concept, it's fun to play, the record is 640.

Maybe add a parallax background of the star sky to add space atmospherics

I like the idea, but I feel like your implementation does not work quite well. The pace is maybe a bit too fast and the result is too random. I had a game where every space invader where blue at the beginning, and I couldn't be fast enough to defeat them even by throwing away all the other colors as fast as possible. Maybe using hand-made levels could alleviate the problem and allow for a smoother difficulty curve ?

@draklaw thanks for the feedback! We've actually addressed both of those issues in the post version by 1) making the enemies start off slower and 2) generating their colours pseudo-randomly, so you don't get annoying situations like what you described. We're also planning on making some hand-made levels at some stage. So we agree fully with your feedback :)

Cool combination of genres!
The theme was well implemented and the movement/shooting mechanics felt right.
Some difficulty progression would be nice. Adding colors and adjusting ball falling speed would really help. It was a little frustrating not getting a needed color or being able to find what to do with a solitaire ball while the rest were rapidly approaching.
Graphics could have been more consistent.
Solid entry!
