Blood, Sweat, Tears by falstro

made by falstro for LD 44 (COMPO)

2D top-down adventure game, gain health by defeating enemies - pay for upgrades and ammo with your health.

Clear out all enemies in each area at least once to unlock the final boss battle at the ocean front.

Use WASD to move around, and shift to run. Left mouse for melee attack, right mouse button for ranged attack. Escape to bring up the menu, which will also pause the game.

There's a shop in the center area, where you may buy ammo, as well as permanent upgrades, using your own health. You may need to purchase a max health upgrade (and regain enough health) before you can afford other upgrades.

Clear the countryside of the cursed Bowelfoot monsters to summon their tyrant king from the ocean! Then strike him down too! ;)

This is my very first LD48 attempt, and I'm happy with the result in the sense that the game is playable, it has an end that can in theory be reached, and I think the the game mechanics are interesting and could be developed further. The game itself however, is obviously severely lacking :)

Twitch VODs are available for a couple of weeks at: https://www.twitch.tv/falstro/videos

I did an HTML5 export as well, however it gets messed up when there are particles on screen, so I removed it again.

The game is well balanced in terms of upgrades, but the fights seem a little hard. I've tried a couple of times to kill the first critters just with melee but they always got me first, it feels like it could use a buff. So I was forced to kite them with my ranged attacks. Overall I found the game relaxing, probably due to the simple graphics and color choices.

I feel like the battles are a bit too hard for me. Although kiting is a strategy, it's not very easily executed because you can't aim with your mouse. The map is vast but very empty. I would also love to know the cost of upgrades in the shop.
