ASTROPOVER by puppetmaster

[raw]
made by puppetmaster for LD 41 (JAM)

Story

Your one your way in the space, and than you run out of power for your car. You take a stop over in this alien world and search for batteries.

You have to survive until the last level, pick up as many batteries as possible and go back in you car to continue you journey.

!!!! Attention !!!!

Astropover is not an easy game to run through. It's important to remember where your opponents appear. In the LudumDare version there is the possibility to start a level again or you can even jump to the next level.

Couldn't control the player with the keyboard. It just kept walking right and the direction of the shoots depended on wich side I positioned the mouse. Couldn't get past level 2 :(

Can be improved:
- Performance is really bad (newest Firefox version, could be because of old Godot version)
- It's really confusing that walking direction isn't shooting direction. I don't think using the mouse is a good solution here.
- There is either something wrong with the player collider or there is input lag. Try timing a jump right at the end of a platform, I always fall.
- Like it is the case with nearly all LD games balancing needs to be worked on.
- The background looks really nice but it doesn't suite the foreground. Maybe try to use a more flat look on the foreground.

Good:
- The background effect of the start menu is really really good
- Music is solid but too much for this game. It distracts from the experience.

I'm not sure how well the mix of genres worked out here - it felt like a platformer. All in all it's a solid entry but with lots to improve. Until next time!

Well polished game! I like how the alien worlds feel and the look of the enemies. It's a bit difficult to dodge when they start aiming at you, but we were warned that it wouldn't be easy :) I also like that the batteries give your gun some upgrades.

Great job! The art and music was good and I thought the controls worked pretty well. I found myself wishing I could shoot up sometimes though. It would also help if the enemy bullets were a different color than the player's as I found it difficult to distinguish them when rows of enemies were firing and the player was decently upgraded. Also, not sure if this is just me or the web version, but restarting a level will crash the game after a little while. Overall, I enjoyed the game and liked the varied levels and enemy types. Well done!

Interesting game. Even though Super Mario Bros was the first game that I've ever finished, I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to 2d platforming and ASTROPOVER was a bit too difficult for my liking. Other than that, it's a very solid entry. It might not be the most innovative game that I played this LD but it certainly follows the theme, it has good graphics, nice sounds and it's fun to play. Good job!

This was a nice entry! I made it to level 3 easily but the difficulty takes a huge jump. The first encounter with the green guys puts you in a little corridor where you can't jump and dodge its shots, which was a little frustrating. The game requires a lot of memorization (like you mentioned in the description) and I generally don't like that type of game.

The music was good and the sound effects fit in well with the mood. The graphics were nice also.

I think that since you had the mouse aiming for left and right you should have just allowed the player to shoot in the direction the mouse was pointing. It would have been nice to be able to shoot enemies above me.

Unfortunately the game froze on me twice, both on level 3. Each time the music went into a loop and the input froze.

pretty fun idea! I found a weird glitch where I was jumping while entering the first door and I went in and out of a few doors before I landed again heh!

Graphics need to be polished but looks atmosphere. The idea is nice too, but it would be cool to improve the realization.

I like the game, had fun playing it, although it requires a lot of playing for searching safe spots to the enemy waves.
Nice touch on letting us skip levels, I've learn from this jam that if your game is frustrating you're gonna have a bad time on the ratings :P

Congrats on the entry!

i like the game. I think the difficulty spikes up on the third level quite a bit. I could barely get past it because of how overwhelming it was. The controls need a bit more work to them. Maybe if they were based on keyboard controls only instead of using the mouse for rotating the gun. ( ex. moving right makes the gun face right. moving left makes the gun face left) In my opinion i think that would increase the game overall. The music was nice. Had some charm to it :). The graphics department looks good. Overall a fun game to try.

I love the music! As other people have said there is a huge difficulty jump, but it's Ludum Dare, so if the game isn't perfectly balanced who cares. Good job!

Nice, gameplay reminds of Rush'n Attack! Cool that it's possible to skip levels, but I'd love some checkpoints or medkits!

Well done!

As I am not really good at platformers and shooters I had to skip most of the levels after dying halfway through, but the music is great and fitting the visuals. Also the sound effects being generated from the enemies' position was a nice touch.

Tip: it might be nice to include an "outro" - an animation of flying away from the planet (if the player collected enough batteries).

Since only 2 mins are left to rate the game. I am rating it first and then I'll play it. Hahahah! I hope that is fine with you! xD

@MacDoom I'm sorry it wasn't playable for you.

@Anudin Thanks for the detailed comment, we have deliberately set the direction of the shot depending on the running direction.

@gatinmnsok, @Hadik thank you :smile:

@minibobbo Thanks for your detailed comment, I had the freezing in the html build once too. I guess it has something to do with the background music loop. Thanks for testing.

@McCordinator Congratulations you found a very funny level skipping bug.

@Rombus you are totally right, as soon as it is visually a difficult game nobody wants to test it and the remaining ones are not patient and give most a poor rating

@fashionbatman thanks for the uplifting words

@IgorsGames from level 3 up there is a heart that you can pick up

@kittyinthestudio We will rework the controls for the post jam build.

@M-1 Thanks for the latest last-minute testing. The idea with the Outro is great, we will put one in the post jam build.

@Aditya Shukla I appreciate it. Thank you!! You have the honor to make the last vote.
