Sacrifice by Dazzleisace

[raw]
made by Dazzleisace for LD 44 (JAM)

Hey all! So, here is my first Ludum Dare entry for several years. You guys changed the website and I can't use my old login :( I intended to enter the compo but was travelling all day on the Saturday and so only spent Sunday working on the game. I then thought, what the heck, use Monday as well and just enter the Jam.

The game is called Sacrifice and you play as a priest type dude that needs to build up the village by creating farms and houses. Of course, to keep the population in check you have to balance between their happiness and belief in you. This means that you must perform sacrifices in order to increase their belief... you get rewards back from the Gods so it's all good you are using their LIFE AS CURRENCY for resources, food and their belief in you .

Controls: - [ ] WASD - camera move - [ ] QE - camera rotate - [ ] ZX - camera zoom

and the mouse (which is seriously goofy - especially the rotate!)

  • [ ] All coding by moi!
  • [ ] All artwork by moi!
  • [ ] All crappy sounds by as3fxr!

Major to-dos: - [ ] Sometimes the game crashes. I think it's to do with the meeple spawning. - [ ] The meeples aren't always being destroyed. - [ ] Make the meeple explode with blood splatter on sacrifice! - [ ] Balance the stats, they are well off! - [ ] Make the meeple explode with blood splatter on sacrifice! - [ ] Make the game more fun. - [ ] Make the meeple explode with blood splatter on sacrifice! - [ ] Make the meeple do stuff. - [ ] Make the meeple explode with blood splatter on sacrifice! - [ ] Make the graphics better. - [ ] Make the meeple explode with blood splatter on sacrifice!

I think that's it. I had fun, I hope you had a good Ludum Dare and I look forward to playing all your games!!!

I really liked the straightforward graphics and the sound effects are pretty good. It would have been nice to have some background music though. Sadly, I didn't really figure out how to play the game though. I was able to make farms and I think I did a sacrifice or two in my attempts to play but I lost very quickly. I think I may be missing something here.

The game wouldn't actually go past the start game button, clicked it and it just froze (the page itself didn't freeze)

Nice Concept, reminds me of Deism. Controlls are verrsy clunky tho.

Interesting concept, not much of a match for the theme but was happy to see a little village management game. Sadly could not seem to get it to work long enough for a good test. Crashed out a few times in firefox and couldn't get it to load in chrome. May I suggest a desktop build as web unity seems to be funky at times. Though when I did get the game working it was not clear how to progress. I could see 3 options to build but sacrifice seemed to do nothing. When I clicked villagers I got a game over after 2 clicks.

I had a lot of trouble balancing everything! My first games ended really quickly. I thought I was doing good in my last run but then I sacrificed too much and ran out of happiness.

I like the graphic style, and the concept is interesting.
It's a bit hard to keep track of all the parameters, and how they evolve.

However, well done !

Great job at the game, I do love me a builder type game! Some things were a bit weird though, it seems no matter how many farms I put down, even with a low population my food kept going down? Also I ran out of population despite there being about 20+ meeple on the screen xD

There was a small bug when going back to the menu after dying, the play button doesn't work anymore, probably some dodgy prefab reference error or something.

Great job! Just needs some polish :)

Not bad for only working about a day and a half on it. There is something there, though it could be more fleshed out.

@darkguardsman Thanks for the feedback. Sorry, it's not very clear, I need to change this. You select the Sacrifice option, and then you click in the game window to perform a sacrifice.

@gear-steak Thanks for the feedback. I've had it crash occasionally too. Like @darkguardsman suggests, I need to publish a downloadable version!

@ausstein Thanks for the feedback. Yep, controls are very clunky! Especially the mouse. I spent most of the jam trying to get a good camera controller written. It needs a lot of work!

@norris-eldridge Thanks for the feedback. I think I need to make a tutorial.

Interesting use of the theme. Kinda tough balancing all the meters, but everything was really well done.

I really enjoyed the concept of balancing all the stats and I found it difficult at first but eventually got use to it. But I also agree some there should be some background music and a bit more graphics to the environment would help

@sylvie @yvanor Thanks for the feedback. I found getting things to balance out really difficult. I think I was very mean with the rate that parameters reduced - I guess I didn't want the game to be too slow.

@refraction Thanks for the feedback. Yeh, I need to fix that. It's very misleading and makes you think you are doing better than you are.

@estuvomuybien Thanks for the feedback. Yeh, I have made it far too tricky to get them to balance whilst playing and the way that the parameters affect each other needs a lot of work!

@christopher-wong Thanks for the feedback. Yep, music would give it a lot more atmosphere. I did start to create some but my music making skills are not the best and so I gave up on that!

For the limited amount of time you said you had this is a great start! I know you've got plenty you want to add to it so just a couple points. I think a text box explaining what each building does when you hover over it might be nice because I wasn't sure what to build at first, as well as showing the amount each meter will go up or down. Also it might feel better to have a system where meters are affected by other meters rather than just time, i.e. food goes down based on how many farms you have vs how many people you have. I'd love to see this again and be able to build up lots of monuments and followers! Good job again!

@rhoka Sorry for the delay but many thanks for that feedback! You are totally right, I need something that gives feedback to the player on what they are doing. I've added a simple message box for the moment as I didn't want to to break any rules in terms of updating the project. Thanks again!

very interesting that to make sacrifices to give something in return we had thought the same thing but we decided to change in the end congratulations

Cool graphics, it also fitted in very nicely with the theme. Some audio might be nice.
