Cavern Crawl by SpoopsMcGee

[raw]
made by SpoopsMcGee for LD 42 (JAM)

In Cavern Crawl, you play a character that is in a dungeon that is seemingly collapsing behind them. You have a candle with a limited area range, and the rest of the cave is dark. Can you make it out with the least deaths?

The three of us had come up with many different options for the look of our game and eventually stuck on the classic dungeon running game. This is our first time finishing a game jam together and despite taking breaks, some of us waking up later than usual, or just life bouncing us from place to place it's still a game that we had fun making and we have learned a lot just by participating.

I get pushed through walls! Perhaps some continuous collision detection on the character?

@craigduth absolutely! We had a bit of problems with collisions throughout the time we were making it. Thanks for trying it out! :) Is there a way to continuously implement that? We originally thought it was because the walls weren't big enough

@spoopsmcgee Under the rigidbody component for the character there is a Collision Detection variable with a dropdown, if you set it to continuous it might help!

a neat concept and cool lighting. wish there was a bit better controls and collision.

Controls could also use some work. WASD movement didn't seem to work well and arrows key movement felt chopy. Also seems the moving wall can push you right through objects without issue. I rode the moving wall a good 5 mins before death.

Since some of the issues have been addressed, all I need to say is that the idea was there, but wasn't executed correctly. The movement does provide challenge, but it was very hard for me to maneuver around the obstacles. Good try, though.

@popdaddygames @dominic-graziano @darkguardsman @bustosman thank you all for your comments :) I hope to work with everyone on making movements more fluid and def fixing colliders. I’m really glad that other than that you all enjoyed it. Thank you again 😄

As I love dark games I am pretty much happy to have found this one. While there are some control and collision issues I do think this idea is worth exploring further!!! Good luck!

@confituur thank you! I hope we can improve it enough post mortem to make it more responsive because the atmosphere is my favorite part.
