Square One by BeveL

[raw]
made by BeveL for LD 42 (JAM)

Parkour and collect objects to run out of inventory space! This game is a puzzle + parkour! Square One! Enjoy! This is my first ever Ludum Dare! I am BeveL, a beginner game dev, and this is my second game, Square One. You have to parkour through levels, avoid obstacles, and collect objects! There are some glitches and misspellings in the game, but that was a result of me not having enough time rip. I hope you enjoy my second game in the LD42 game jam! Hey! I played your game last night and I feel bad that I wasn't good enough to really play it. U_U Sorry. But I guess my critique would be that it as an interesting premise that could have benefited from some play-testing. Also maybe check out some Unity tutorials for lighting, since even a simple directional light would have made it a lot easier to make sense of things.

@rebecca-kremer I don't care if you did not play my game for a long time, I am still very happy that you actually played it! I will definitely take your advice and ask some of my friends to playtest my game before publishing it. Fyi, I actually did have a directional light in the scene, but I should put more lights in my game anyway ;p. I made a video, proving that the whole game could be done. It is a bit low quality, but it's the best my crappy computer can do. I will definitely heed your advice for the next Ludum Dare! Thank You!

Had a very hard time trying to play this game, the camera was far too sensitive and it was incredibly hard to control. Also I felt like I had no time to complete objectives (for example I was asked to collect 4 objects in 1 second, but I couldn't even see the objects in that time, let alone reach them!).

It seems like you probably over-scoped with this project, in future try to remember that quality wins out over quantity in game jams, and making smaller simpler games with one or two levels that has great polish to the gameplay as well as look and feel are often better received. I don't doubt that you worked hard on this project but it's clear that you needed some playtesting feedback during it's development. I hope you continue to make games and come back for the next jam having learned a lot from this one!

@historymaker118 Thanks for the feedback! I have made the observation by playing LD42 games that people have made really small games, but the graphics were super good. I will remember your advice for the next Ludum Dare. Thank you!

Nice job ^_^. I thought it was really hard at first because I thought I had to get close to the items to pick them up. It got a lot easier once I realized I could just sweep the camera over some to pick them up. I had some trouble figuring out what was causing me to launch on the jump level.

@eric-schmiel You are the first one to actually make it to the jump pad level! I am glad you pushed through and made it far in the game! I hope you enjoyed the gameplay in the end! Thank you for playing!

nice idea for a game. it is pretty hard since the camera is too sensitive (or i'm not that really good!). struggled a bit with the first level since i thought that you should collide with the cube to pick it up.you could have added more color to your game, though i like the music!

Nice work. How do you think the game would feel if you used a camera perspective other than first-person e.g. third-person or side-view?

Why would you put a timer in this kind of a game? It's really annoying to wait 3 seconds between each try. Also it would be nice if you could collect boxes without directly looking at them. And lightning would also help. And some easier levels...

Wow, this one is fast !

I had to retry the FIRST level like 10 times before I could complete it.

The main reason being : it's never written anywhere that I need to CLICK to gather items... xD

You should allow more time in the tutorials levels imho.

Oh and the reset button is hardly visible when your game is played fullscreen using 1920x1080 resolution, just to let you know !

Congrats on your first LD anyway, keep making games !

@maksime Everybody is confused because they never play the tutorials. If you play tutorial 1, it explains to you how to gather items. btw, you don't have to click to gather them ;p.

Nice game, I hope to see more updates and improvments sooner.
If you don't bother take a look at our game when we focused on Graphics and visuals and see the results that we got:

It seems like a pretty cool game with quite a bit of content, but I was just not able to control it properly. The mouse look felt very weird, at the same time too fast and kinda dragging, which made it impossible for me to play. I really tried, but couldn't get past level 3. I'd love to try this again if you improved the controls a bit. Good job anyway!

@erkberg Thank you for playing my game! The bad gameplay was the result of not having playtesters and running out of time to finish the game.
