Love Is A Battlefield by F1Krazy

[raw]
made by F1Krazy for LD 41 (COMPO)

Love Is A Battlefield is (probably) the world's first bullet hell dating sim. Win the heart of your date, Karen, by literally showering her with affection! Thematically, it's about insecurity, and the emotional barriers we put up to avoid getting hurt.

ld41_6.gif

Features:
- A love interest named Karen, who visibly and verbally responds to your actions
- A boss battle with multiple attack patterns
- My first fully-completed PICO-8 game!

Controls:
- Arrow keys: Move
- Z: Select
- X: Go back a screen

V1.1 fixes several serious bugs relating to the boss fight. If you would prefer to play the game in its originally-uploaded state, V1.0 is still available.

gen8's Anime Face Maker was used as a reference for the facial sprites.
Everything else in the game was made by me, from scratch, in PICO-8.

I hit enter on play and get a screen that says 'Continue or reset cart' Upon hitting enter with the selector on continue it brings me back to the start screen :/

Took a minute to figure out the z/x controls in the menu. It would have been nice to see the other side of the conversation; maybe add in pick up lines when enemies are killed or something? Good execution of bullet hell mechanics. Difficulty rating felt good.

@Sharks Menu items are selected with Z. Sorry, I forgot that not everyone will know the PICO-8 control scheme, I'll add that into the description.

Always nice to see another game made with pico-8 and for your first try, it's pretty good! There were just a few things that irritated me like the constant beeping noise when shooting and no sound when scrolling up and down the menu. But overall, not a bad first game :)

Fun game! I thought it meshed well with the theme since reading text is the last thing you want to be doing while dodging bullets. Difficulty felt right, I thought the shot noise was a little annoying after extended play.

Wow, really nice. The whole package comes together: great sound and graphics, tight gameplay, and the challenge level is tough-but-fair with the theme story creating enough suspense to motivate me to keep trying.

I managed a victory, but I think I simultaneously died to the final attack and entered a strange win-and-lose combo state that sent the game a little bonkers. The sound effect of the final attack hitting me carried over into the title screen, where the menu got strange and seemed to move the heart between four slots rather than three, and all of them went to the credits screen.

The boss fight was cool and worked well with the story.

Great job!

The boss fight is superb. I think I could play for hours if the story continued. I had some difficulty identifying the gain and loss conditions of the "love indicator". Maybe an text indicator when enemies die. Whatever, I really really enjoyed the game.

Really enjoyed playing this! It's a unique concept executed very well, and the boss fight was great too! It's a compact but complete game with a good level of difficulty. Well done!

This was fun! The two genres seemed incompatible but you made them fit together nicely.

I loved the simple graphics and the spritework.

A little feedback, it was difficult to read the girl's messages and dodge the bullets at the same time. Maybe if the enemies came in waves and the comments came between the waves?

Also, on the final boss I stood in front of the giant laser to see what would happen. I died (which was expected). but then my life bar went way down off the bottom of the screen. Also, my player was gone, but I was still shooting and eventually it killed the boss. So I both won and lost and got to see the ending.

This was a great little game!

@minibobbo Thanks! I hadn't thought of waves, that's actually not a bad idea. And it seems I should have tested the boss more, you're not the only person who's reported problems with it. Ran flat outta time, though >.< Glad you enjoyed it all the same!

I sucked hard at this so I'm not sure what I missed at the end, but I liked what I saw so far ^^ It's an interesting combination of genres, kinda reminds me a bit of what I saw of the Undertale battle mechanics. Seconding that it would be nice to have some pauses in the gameplay to read the messages. Great entry, especially for your first LD. Looking forward to more of you! :)

That was actually quite an emotional rollercoaster, at the risk of sounding trite! On a simpler level, I loved the combination of health bar / affection meter. I had the same experience with the boss as @minibobbo, and additionally it would be nice to have a health bar for the boss itself, or at least more feedback that you're doing the right thing - when I died (only to win later) I thought I was meant to, since the boss showed no sign of being damaged.

@Lyje I wanted to put a health bar on the boss (or at least, some visual indicator of damage), but that's another thing I ran out of time for. I'm putting together a list of features and big fixes, and once the contest is over I'll be working on an upgraded version.

Oh, sure, Karen. I'll just totally forget about being shot with giant lasers...

Nice game. I love the fact that it's a complete start-to-finish game. The graphics and sounds mix well together, and the bullet hell part is well designed as well. Great work!

Polished little sweet game! Like the take on it, graphics are cool and it plays smooth. :) Couldn't finish it, though, cause I'm terrible at this type of games.

Yup, I've just finished the boss!

A simple and solid core gameplay, although the sounds effects were kinda off, probably because they were too repetitive and there was no background music. Also, It would be pretty cool if the boss battle was a real battle: instead of a time based one, you could have done the boss shield destructible with some shots, it would definitely improve the final battle feeling.

Solid entry, keep up the good work!

@lukbebalduke Thanks! The boss isn't time-based, it just requires a lot of bullets to kill. The lack of health bar is a problem that I intend to address after judging is over.

@F1Krazy oh, I see that. I don't think you need a health bar, just blink the heart when it gets shot ;)

Overall I liked it, but it was very difficult for me, I couldn't win Karen's love lol.
I liked the blend but the text was often distracting me from actually playing, I guess that's an extra difficulty.
The constant beeping was kind of annoying, and although the artstyle is minimalist and well done, I think it could have a more "romantic" mood of sorts to help with your blending...maybe! Good job overall.

Noooo!!! i can't believe she thinks i'm just like all the others! :( This is a hilarious combination or genres in my opinion and i thought it was a pretty neat game. Really simple and easy to understand, and above all else fun! This would make for a great phone game. Nice work!

Cool game, nice to see different takes on the same genre-combo! If you have the time, I'd appreciate it if you checked out [our game](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/ludum-dare-41-placeholder-1) as well!

I feel like the balance is off, somehow. I can never get above half of the meter on the top right, because there are not enough enemies to shoot before it gets lower again and there is no chance that you can shoot one of the shooting enemies that spawns on the left, when you'are on the far right. The player ship thing is just too slow. So I never got to see the boss.

Great genre-combo! Playing it was really fun. The boss fight wasn't very difficult, there are actually several safe points when it uses its 2nd pattern of bullets. Congrats!

I always find everything done on PICO-8 lovely and this is no different. I played the 1.0 version and I don't think that you've got the balance right on this version, still was solid and entertaining. I liked the writing and the art! I disliked the audio, specially the firing SFX. It just gets terribly annoying after a while lol.

Congrautlations for the entry, it's really charming and it's interesting to balance shmup frantic dodging with dating-sim reading haha

If you have some free time, please take a look at mine, it's a bullet hell meets RTS. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/last-stand

I like the old arcade style! The game is challenging, the dialogs are funny and the art and audio effects are good! All except the shoot sound, that in my opinion is a bit too annoying: maybe you could use a quiter audio effect! However very good work!

Liked your game a lot. With the boss I was able to just stay in 1 spot and win but otherwise I liked the premise and the execution was quite good.
