1) Naming you upgrades, just name them the effect. Ammo upgrade (+1 damage), just say damage upgrade. Gun upgrade (1+ ROF) same goes.
2) The ramp up scheme is too gentle, introduce more interesting enemies faster. The game became FUN when the purple guys started showing up.
3) I would hope for more varied options. The purple guys would camp one side of the map and I would wait for my shields to recharge to do a dive attack.
4) For the love of whatever belief system you subscribe to for the sound effects add around 10% frequency increase or decrease to every sound effect. Identical sound effect repetitions are very tiring.
Overall great job!
Controls felt tight, and it looked nice. The crunchy sound effects worked well with the pixelish art, and I liked how the screen got sloppy with particle trails when things got hectic! The curved ship that would rotate in place and spray a stream of bullets was the guy who created the most interesting dodge problems for me, that was my favorite.
Nice entry!
