"What is "Bring us food JAMes!"? ##

Bring us food JAMes! is a restaurant "simulator" where you take the role of an waiter. The goal of the game is simple: serve as many customers as you can and try to keep calm.

Tools used: - Programming/Game Engine: GameMaker studio 2 - Art: Aseprite - Audio: Audacity

Credits: - Programming, Art & Audio made by Sebastian "Willisika" Saarimaa

Controls:

  • [W,A,S & D] Move the James and navigate the menu.
  • [Spacebar] Interact
  • [Q] Cancel / Close menu
  • [E] Ok / Make order when menu is open

Known Bugs: - Pressing "E" in the game end screen does not restart the game. (Just close and restart the game) - Sometimes the food menu selection jumps to wrong item if the player navigates left or right.

Space to talk, space to use menu, E to select, then Q to close, then space to pick up/put down item. That's quite a dance with the fingers.

This looks like a really polished game. I just think the controls are a bit confusing, because interact and accept are not the same key. I am bad at games like this but you should've seen my wife. Like she was playing Mortal Kombat.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! @nillard & @kaisean-games there was bug with the menu where it would instantly order the selected food when interacting with the menu stand. Changing the controls was a quick workaround for it. I never actually got around fixing the bug.

Nice game! Controls were a bit confusing, but the art is awesome! My restaurant is the most unpopular.

I liked it! Kind of reminded me of Overcooked :-) which is a good thing. Well done!

Very nice artwork! Loved the dialogue from the customers. Felt a little fast towards the end though.

I was pretty bad at remembering who ordered what, but I still had fun. Nice job!

Great game! the idea its classic but the execution is awesome. Fun and challenging I play it two times, got a Sensational! and 24 customers, my record for now. Maybe you can add a tooltip on the kitchen table, sometimes I remember the "word" but not the icon and I finnish throwing food :(
Nice pixel art, I made old-school game too. long live the pixel!

@nax-89 Hey! Thanks for the feedback! The tooltips were in my to do list but they never got added. I'll be sure add them to the post JAM version. Long live the pixel! ;)

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HARD XD !!
Love it, GG, the mechanics are really good and graphics/sounds work very well !
But really not the kind of games I'm able to play ! ><
You sadics ! No advice from me except maybe : make it a little less difficult at the beginning :-)

It's super hard and super fun.

I like the art style and little footstep sounds, it's missing background music though.

Good job!

@leonlaci & @josscomposer Thank you for the feedback! <3
- I made the game ramp up difficulty very fast because JAMmers have ALOT of games to play so I wanted players to experience the stress (the point of the game) as quickly as possible after starting to play. This way they can move to the next game. I wasn't really aiming for long gameplay sessions. :P

- About the missing bg music.....err... yeah. I suck at making music, so after struggling with the music for a bit I decided to go with high quality audio effects instead. ;D

Yeah ! I don't mind the absence of music personally, since the sound design does the job of both the functions and ambient. :-)

Pretty fun! Really gives me a headache when my restaurant is too popular, hahaha. I'm amazed at how well the different food sprites read despite being so small -- great job with that! Controls would probably have been more intuitive if you split them across two hands instead of having the confirm and cancel buttons be on the same hand as movement.

@ddrkirbyisq I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the constructive feedback! I'm currently working on the post LD version and your suggestion has been added to the todo list. Would you prefer to use mouse when navigating the menus instead of WASD?

Hey! It was great playing as the butler :yum:

The controls were fair and making the orders got pretty hard fast! :sweat_smile: This has real charm!

![Screenshot_23.png](///raw/6e6/2/z/eaa5.png)

The only problem I really found was the woman with the brown hair was really hard to see and she got me :sob: "blent in like camouflage" lol

Something to make the controls abit more intuitive would be that instead of using E to drop plates and answer people's orders - instead double tapping in the direction that the objective is (with the plate or without) (AA, WW, DD, SS etc) would make it that bit more faster to speed through the game and removes a level of unncessary complexity. (With the menu the Enter Button would be better than E for most people)

Other than that - It was great fun to play :sweat_smile: I was surprised I got up to where I did!!

Thanks for popping on stream too :wink:

@Willisika - I think keyboard-only controls are fine, but maybe something like using the arrow keys for movement (both in and out of menus) and Z/X for confirm/cancel might split up the load better. That's just an example though, you should try different things to see what works best!

FUN FACT: You CAN control the player with arrow keys in the game... I totally forgot about that. I was going through the code for the controls and there it was:

```
key_right = max(keyboard_check(vk_right), keyboard_check(ord("D")));
key_up = max(keyboard_check(vk_up), keyboard_check(ord("W")));
key_left = max(keyboard_check(vk_left), keyboard_check(ord("A")));
key_down = max(keyboard_check(vk_down), keyboard_check(ord("S")));
```
I didn't make any alternatives for the "Interact","Ok" and "Cancel" keys though... whoopsie. :P
