Ascii paouf II by shubart

[raw]
made by shubart for LD 41 (JAM)

Second Ludum.

Personnal engine updated.

I choose to mix a Ball Breaker with QTE.

You got 5 lives (sorry, no time left to create a hud for that)

Alone for 2 days (a few tweaks monday).

Thanks to internet for music and pictures

CONTROLS:

Gamepad / Mouse / Arrows : displace the bar

Start / Select / Return : pause the game

ESC : Restart

LEFT SHIFT + ESC : Exit

Whenever a QTE appears, use keyboard/gamepad to fullfill.
In case of success, you get a bonus, in case of failure, it get worse.

Known issue :

QWERTY/AZERTY keyboard not really well supported (fixed in post ludum)

Cheating and tweaks:

* you may edit the game.json file in resource to have more (or less). I will probably tweak myself theses settings soon *

Project compilation

I regret, but due to dependencies, you probably wont be able to compile the source. Let me know if you want more info on that

Post Ludum version

Latest version after ludum submission : 5th june 2018

  • Score / Best Score / Combo
  • Better fonts
  • Refactors (you probably don't care)
  • Life hud
  • MultiBall
  • Better QTE challenge reward/punishment management
  • New rewards/punishment

    Incomming ...

  • Real hand made levels

baby players may play with a gamepad

I like the design. You did a good job with the sounds, informing the player of a time limit and punishments when they did something wrong.

Solid game! A highscore would be cool, and it could be a little harder :)

I miss some hours to tweak the game. i wanted to add manually created levels, a life hud, multiple balls ... and tweak the difficulty. Some bugs stop me for while. A few hours before the end, i didn t even have a game. So i considere myself lucky

for the difficulty, you always can edit the game.json file in resources. variable names are self describing

Fun game idea, but it is a bit difficult to play.

Cool idea! Too bad for the keyboard support, that's pretty crippling for a typing game :/ The gamepad version is actually way more enjoyable! Kudos for the custom engine ;)

I'm not sure what the note about QWERTY keyboards is about -- my QWERTY keyboard worked perfectly fine. I think it's neat that the ball slows down whenever a word shows up to give you time, which especially works well with mouse controls, because you have to take your hand off the mouse to type.

I think either a highscore or a win condition would be a nice addition.

I also think difficulty levels would be interesting, as I found it a little easy.

The french AZERTY keyboard is detected as if it was a QWERTY. This seems to be an issue in GLFW (this is the first time a used keys other than arrows and functions). I have to find a way to fix it. Nevertheless, this can be fixed directly within windows settings. I am going to continue working on it for a few weeks (not at full time this time). I want to add score/hiscore/life bar and the notion of levels (hand made levels and a game that becomes harder throught time). Maybe more 'specials' like multi balls

I like that the ball slows down when you have to type. But do you ever lose or win? I miss-typed and lost the ball quite often but the game kept on going. I also think the game could be improved by allowing to steer the ball more, for example that it bounces to the left when it lands on the left side of the paddle. But the music gave the game a great mood.

I wanted to change the direction of the ball according to the position it bounces on the paddle. I miss time (and sleep) to do so. I am going to add this in a post ludum version.

This is really good! I didn't find it too difficult - got to maybe the fourth or fifth level without issue. I did a typing game too, and your word list seems a lot more interesting than mine; where'd you get it?

I symply searched for a french and an english dictionnary in text. I only keep words between 3 and 10 letters (can be adjusted in configuration file)

As someone who just happens to love typing quickly, that game was brilliant! I've seen bricks before, but I had no idea a game about typing quickly would actually be awesome. Good job :)

It's certainly a cool mashup; I enjoyed the basic gameplay, but I'm not sure the QTE's integrated that well into the overall gameplay. Overall though, lots of fun!

I was bored at first... But then everything got more and more fast and it really got interesting!

The music is nice and the SFX are clean and really funny! Good point on that.

It's simple and silly, nice little entry! Good job :)

Good game, it's pretty fun, and hard. It shame me to admit it, but I tend to look at my keyboard when I type, which is not compatible with catching the ball with the mouse. This could be an edutainment game about typing and it will definitely help me type on QWERTY keyboards ^^. Great work !

Absolutely love it, such good fun, challenging and quick and a nice small well polished game. Also that song rocks.
