Orcs Must JAM! by AfroAnt

[raw]
made by AfroAnt for LD 41 (JAM)

title_screen.png

Deep into the night, your orcs have gotten groggy. When all of a sudden...SKELETON ATTACK!

  • Man the fortifications
  • Shoot the undead
  • Repair your walls
  • Look for the light at the dawn of the new day
  • And keep to the beat of the JAM!

We combined Rhythm and Tower Defense games, with a healthy mix of Fantasy and Western genres to boot (heh)

CONTROLS

  • ASDF - Orc actions (shoot or repair)
  • Click on Orc - Change tool (gun or hammer)

TutorialImage.png

Change Log

  • Fixed audio muting when restarting after a game over
  • Enabled the sun lighting (had it disabled on accident)

Created by MessinaBrothers - AfroAnt - programming - EvilAsShiz - graphics - Loois - audio - lylefreekz - animations

Post-Ludum Build

  • Orc line flares on a successful beat hit
  • Missing a beat causes a delay in input in that lane (prevents button smashing)
  • Added various graphics (gunshot light, post-processing effects)
  • Fixed bugs (death animation)
  • Altered the intro (countdown timer, target ring flares on first lick)
  • Removed double-mustache from Orc #2 :(

I love the concept! Execution is great too, except it took me a bit to figure out at what point I had to press my buttons.

Thanks for stopping by my stream tonight https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames . I'm not sure if that graphic was in the description earlier, but it does make it very clear how to line up the notes to activate the orc.

Good Game!

I enjoyed every second of this. The game seems simple and easy yet quite polished. Are you guys thinking about upgrading and releasing it?

interesting concept, but needs better balance. Enemies attacks are to often. Visibility is limited you can't plan your strategy.

Man, this game is fantastic! The art is great, the music is great. I had a really fun time playing it! The only problem i had with it was that sometimes the drum beats didnt fit properly in the music, but i can imaginie why you did that way. Great job!

Dancing cactus is the best thing ever.

I'm so terrible with rythim / music games, but this one is very well done. I like how you have two actions and must change between them. It's exhausting though ><

Great entry and rythm defene game is a great idea. The chars are cool and like the ORcs must die-parody. Cool work!

This game is awesome!

Loved the concept, great art style, nice 3D models, cool animations, great music.

It could only be a bit more well polished in the difficulty progression and player feedback, though. The area of effect (where you can press the button to make an orc shoot) could be highlighted - as well as some indicator on what lane the skeletons will appear. It makes the game more difficult not having those, but it doesn't ruin the fun. I sure had a lot of fun with this!

Super cute game! I really love the dancing cactuses and the music is great. I would have prefered to have the rythm be based on the accual beat not the sound waves as I found it hard to time the keystrokes to the visual soundwaves even if they "hit" the orcs in time with the music. It's a bit hard to explain but it just feals wrong to me. The rythm system is also super abusable as there isn't anything stopping you from mashing the buttons wich also is super effective.

A really cool game but the rythm system needs a look over

lovely game..good combo...i think i would change the controls to something like 'd' 'f' 'j' 'k' so you could play with 2 hands

This is really cute, but it's super-confusing that your actions don't actually match the rhythm of the music.

Fun game, and good music too! The only issue I thought was that sometimes there weren't enough "soundwaves" to deal with all the skeletons that were spawning. Other than that, great job!

yoooo the look and feel is so good here! The intro screen alone is great, but then the camera pans and the cactus are all rubberhose dancing too. Also, when dawn starts to hit and the shadows slink away, it creates an unbelievable mood to it while the skeletons are all rushing you. The dawn effect is by far one of my favorite effects I've seen in any LD, despite how subtle it is.

It took me a failed try to realize when the timing for the hits needed to be. I thought the gameplay was also excellent. You had to kinda scan the field and plan out what you wanted to do for the next set of drumbeats. The healing was a bit straight forward, but with more tools or guntypes I could see a player making quick decisions on loadout and then executing it to a beat. Really good entry with lots of post-LD potential!
