Snakes and Ladders: A Texted Based Adventure Game by argowen

So its a mash up of a classic board game and a text adventure game; whats more fun that actually rolling a dice and physically moving pieces on a board, I’ll tell you: typing “roll dice” and having no visible board or pieces but a short description telling what square you are on. And for hilarity I added the ability to fake a dice roll but be warned if you try and fake too many rolls your opponent will force you to roll a dice like a normal person.

After a long time trying to come up with an idea that would be doable in the time I had along with combating my own procrastination; I eventually restarted and came up with the above idea. For my own fun I decided I would steer clear of loads of the other programming languages that I know and just throw something together in vb.net without really planning it. In fairness I got sick of this project & theme like I did the last one I submitted (I think that was around 35, "That Blue Square"). Anyway with all that said and done I've uploaded the source in zip format to my gdrive link below. the exe has been compiled and is available within the bin dir.

I actually had a lot of fun with this  The descriptions of the squares, coupled with the console output added a surprisingly existential feel to the whole game.

Plus major props for a well implemented theme - text adventure + boardgame is a pretty incompatible mix!

Interesting take! I never thought text-based snakes and ladders would be so funny!

You've chosen two exceedingly incompatible genres and made it fun. Congratulations!

Unfortunately it's not working on my computer. Windows 10 here.

Keep working on games to make even better ;)

This is quite a funny premise. I love the hilarious writing. Many other games like this would probably repeat lines quite a lot, but every square here seems to have a different line, which is impressive. It did get repetitive after a while with how many snakes I landed on, but I made it eventually. Also, I'm not sure if the examine function works; it never seemed to do anything. That aside, I had a really fun time with this game. Nice work!

I just LOVE this game! It follows an Approach that I had in mind while Brainstorming for this LD, but I threw it away because I didn't dare to try. It is hard making such a board game in text-based form interesting, but you did it really well. Nothing really to improve (unless you want to bother with Sound some time), so Keep up the good work!

Thanks guys for the feedback; I really wasn't too sure about this one and as I stated I really started to not like it while I was finishing up I guess more so than my last LD entry I'd guess due in part to the theme being a tough one this time around. I know for a fact that the code in this is really bad too as I was trying to rush to get it working and complete before the submission time for jam. I might actually go back and re-write the entire thing a lot more cleanly and add a few extra random features, I did like the idea of adding some sound into it potentially voice work for the room descriptions and/or dice roll sounds for well you guessed it the dice rolling. I like the idea of making it a bit more Dungeon's and Dragons-esque also but I guess we'll see what happens as so far of all the entries that I have submitted over the past few years I've not actually gone back to a single one of them LOL.
