Maybe add a timer to increase the tension in a post-jam version?
only downside, the jump feels a bit slow, but that's it :)
Only critique is that falling through one platform makes you fall all the way to the bottom and some text overlayed and made it impossible to read.
The art and audio were fantastic, however. It was one of the most enjoyable games so far.
Here's for constructive criticism (I hope):
- It's difficult to notice the window at first, so the player gets a couple of seconds of confusion as to what they should be doing (and what the game is about)
- The objective isn't very clear either: it took me a while to realize I was collecting eggs. When I heard a coin sound I was looking for a counter somewhere in the HUD. Also, I wasn't sure if the game would proceed endlessly or if there'd be a final score at the end.
- For some reason I expected deliveries to be timed (as in, the customer eventually leaves) but it looks like they only leave if you mess up twice. This is probably for the best but I think the flow of customers leads you to believe you're on the clock. I also didn't know at which point the day would end, and what I would miss by losing a customer.
- Some adjectives seem mismatched: is a scythe really lavish? For consistency, "Tool" could also be replaced by an adjective, i.e. "Utilitarian"
- **Bugs**: my second customer (first day) had its last line overlap the previous one instead of appearing under it (1). I believe one customer's dialogue overlapped the previous one's "thank you" at some point, too.
- Not sure how it fits with the theme? Is it because eggs give life, and eggs are currency here?
- This is meta criticism but I would've liked to see your names and roles. As it stands, I can only tell it's a jam game - and I'd like to know how many you were on it, if you produced your assets during the jam, etc.
Still, great work! The game is witty (2) and visually pleasing, so it's a win for me!
(1)
(2) I mean, one guy was going to propose to his wife with an olive.
- I was worried the window would be hard to tell that it was special, we had intended to have some little icon pop up to show that it's intractable but we ran out of time.
- I wanted to avoid having UI elements, I think I added too many eggs that they don't stand out so much. There are 5 days total with a small ending based on how well you did. We didn't have much time for play testing the final product as it came together towards the end, we feel in retrospect 5 customers per day is too much
- A timer was originally planed but was scrapped due to time constraints, the rest of the game worked without a timer so I put a focus on bug squashing though I do wish I had time(pun intended) for the timer
- Haha a scythe is not lavish, we had a huge spread sheet with item properties that I would export to unity to fetch the data, there were a lot of items and properties so there are a few mistakes from miss clicks here and there. I like Utilitarian, I wasn't a huge fan of tool but the only other word that came to mind was 'useful' but that felt weird as well.
- That is correct haha, the chicken is trying to get her eggs back which the farmer sold and the eggs are the life she created. We didn't want to use the theme as a game play mechanic as we were sure a lot of games would take the theme literally, and we wanted to do something outside the box which was hard for this theme. So we tried to tie to into the story, which unfortunately needs to be read on the ludum dare page, I had no time to incorporate it into the game elegantly.
- Yea there seems to be something wrong with the word metallic that's breaking things.
- You mean proposing with a single olive is not normal? :O
The art is cute, gameplay is fun and the song fits perfectly, even taking a little long to finish the game, the end just make it worth!
I made some mistakes and couldn't fill the shelf :(
I think it would be cool if the customer got impatient and leaved and thant rather than a certain number of customer for a day it would be a time in wich you had to sell everything you can.
