A score attack FPS about defending the Pentagon from power-hungry viruses

AIMS shot 1.png

In a cyberpunk 1980s, you are a new recruit to the NSA's Advanced Infiltration Management System (AIMS) program, which develops and operates a manual firewall. The Pentagon owns a valuable plot of cyber-space; the network situated there is constantly under siege from malicious (probably communist) actors. Recent political events require the Pentagon to direct all of the network's power externally, leaving no resources for self-defense, and only enough power for one sentient agent to use the network. Your job is to patrol the network for viruses, keep them from stealing resources, and ensure it never runs out of power.

How to play:

  • Shoot anything that moves; if it moves, it's a virus

  • Defend the servers from virus attacks

  • Any time a virus spawns, the network loses some power

  • If a server goes down, you lose a lot of power

  • Servers recover health if they haven't been attacked for a bit

  • If you protect a dead server long enough that it recovers all health, you regain the power it cost you

  • Keep the network up as long as possible

I really like the Tron style theme. Not clear if you can actually win, or how much map is reachable.

I liked the art style but didn't get what I had to do.

thanks for the feedback so far! basically just shoot anything that moves and prevent the orange viruses from hurting the servers, which are the octagonal things with health bars. it's a score attack, so the goal is to last as long as you can and beat your high score.

so it was a bit confusing at first, some more ingame instructions would be good, and i did mark a little lower for graphics, the initial look was bad but once the snow starts appearing it hurt my eyes to play so that gets a down i am afraid.

Glad I read comments to figure out instructions first. I do think though that's a quick fix if you decide to polish it a bit. Amazing work for a compo!!! Gets pretty hard when those viruses start piling up on my servers!

Added some more explanation in the description. should be less difficult to figure out now

Nice style and theme. Makes me wish system admining is about shooting stuff. I love the two phase jump feel, and how it gets more dramatic towards the end.

Great game! I found it a bit difficult at first to get around and shoot properly since in some cases I couldn't tell if there was a boundary in the way, but I was soon able to figure out how to get around faster and double jump, which was a very helpful feature to have. The graphics were very good and the audio was fitting as well. I liked the overall idea and with a little polishing it would be even better, but this is still amazing work for the compo. Overall, great job!

The game had a nice feel to it, but since you cannot shoot through the floors it adds unnecessary difficulty.

Nice, simple first-person shooter. It ran smoothly, and despite the simple graphics I actually really liked the visual style -- it reminded me of some of the first-generation playstation games. I had trouble figuring out how to regain energy, and while I managed to do it a few times I'm still not sure I understand it. I found the slowdown when the server is near death pretty annoying... I wanted to move fast to try to fix things, but it felt more like the game was already over. Overall this is a solid compo entry. Thanks for sharing!

I wish more games went with the '80s-computer style instead of Unity's terrible default point lighting!!! This was such a great experience. Shooting felt pretty tight (even if the floors were more of an obstacle than I would have liked). The fact that the game slows down as you lose power...so perfect. I used a similar effect in my game with the music track.

EXCELLENT WORK. Seriously.

I love the effects when you start to run out of power! Great game!

The slowdown is really cool and it feels great to shoot a ton of bullets in slow motion, but when you're at 2% and the game is taking five minutes to end, it's easier to quit out than to lose. Also, a small bug where at slow speeds firing two bullets close in time to each other causes them both to disappear.

@will-walters, the two bullet thing is intentional, but yeah, it isn't very clear that it's meant to be that way

There is a lot going on in this game, and the graphics were an okay stab at the 80s retro. The Shooting mechanic felt nice, and the gameplay was pretty simple. so good job

Simple but fun! I really like the graphical style and the slow down effect when you're running low on power is a nice touch. Good job!
