The IMPossible escape by Marsheleene

[raw]
made by Marsheleene for LD 44 (JAM)

You are dead! And cast to hell!

Fortunately, an imp offers you a way out to escape eternal torture. It's a bet: can you reach the exit before you lifeforce expires? He's even willing to allow you certain powers, but at a price: your lifeforce...

The IMPossible Escape

My Ludum Dare 44 Entry. The theme is "Your life as currency". It's a timed precision platformer. Your healthbar represents the timer, and you can buy any power charges you want in exchange of a bit of health. Try to finish with the maximum health remaining!

Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to add more levels, nor sounds, nor to polish. Maybe in the future!

How to play

Keyboard and Gamepad are supported.

  • Move: Arrows | Left joystick
  • Jump: Space | (A) button
  • Dash: X key | (X) button.

Really nice visuals and concept :)

Maybe consider having a first level without the shop, because I had no idea what I was buying before the level started.

Fun game! I feel like the shop maybe muddled thing a bit, as I found I could just but 20x double jumps to cheese every level.

What if instead there was no shop and the double jump/dash cost health to use ingame?

i really like the way u used the theme in a jump&run.
I also liked they way u wanted to go with your graphics.
It needs some content for the flow, but has a really good concept.

I liked the main mechanic of the game, I would have loved some music and sound effects though. Also the jump feels a little bit fast to me.

I liked the mood of the game :)
I just think that it s sad you just dont know what to expect in the level when you have to buy things in the shot, and so you sometimes have to do the level and be stuck, then restarting it but this time by buying the items you need^^"

GG to you anyway!

Fun little game. The concept is simple, yet cool.
Some audio design here would be really nice, and the transition time between scenes felt too long. Congrats!

The concept of spending health/time for upgrades is a good one, but it is strange to do it without any knowledge of the level you are going into. At least on the last level, there is no way of knowing that you will need dashes and double jumps before already trying and failing at the level. Furthermore the character controller itself felt a bit off. Especially when using something like Unity, unless there is something unique about how you want to handle player movement, theres no shame in using previously created scripts such as the ones from Standard Assets; theres no reason to reinvent the wheel for that.

Criticisms aside, the conceit of making a deal with an imp is a good one, it adds a nice implied layer of story to the game. Also the art is nice, and I feel was very cohesive. Good job!

Fun concept! Graphics are cute and the theme is well interpreted. The controls are a bit clunky i would have enjoyed them a little smoother. The jump is really powerful and the gravity a little low, you maybe should control the velocity yourself instead of using built-in "AddForces" functions.

Great work! And I see it is your first game posted in ldjam so : Bienvenue (from Lille ;) )

Really fun idea here, I love the mechanic of trading health in the shop for items/powerups. I thought the double jump 'feel' wasn't quite right, but with some work could be really dialed in. Some music and sound design would really make this pop!

Nice idea! :) I liked the idea of first buying stuff without knowing whether you'll need it or not.

Cool game! The control of the character can be a little bit tricky . I think with a bit of polish it will become something really amazing!

I had fun with this game! Graphics was really nice and overall this was a great concept for a game. Personally I would prefer moving on WSAD, but like they say, improvise, adapt, overcome XD So I managed to play on arrow keys. In the first place i didn't know what to buy, but it is easy after one try. Didn't find any bugs. Good job!
