The Coffee Quest by sommerlilie

[raw]
made by sommerlilie for LD 40 (JAM)

Welcome to our first LD participation:

c86a.gif

You are a small and insignificant intern. Your job is to bring coffee to everyone and do insignificant tasks.

HOW TO PLAY / TRICKS:
- sometimes other interactable objects (like other NPCs) block the ability to interact. Just try pressing e and find the spot, sorry ;)
- You will need to interact with various things, like the coffeemachine to fill your coffeepot.
- For the first quest, you'll need to pick up the watering can by pressing e.
- On the right top corner all active quests are listed. - At the beginning, you only work on the ground floor. As time passes, you will also have to do jobs in higher floors. This is also reflected by changes in the music

CONTROLS:
- use a, d, w, s to move left, right, up, down (elevator). - use e to interact. - use q to swap the inventory items.

Gameplay: - Fulfill the tasks, before the time runs out. Therefore collect items like the broom or wateringcan with "e".
- On success will get another task.
- Two more tasks on failure.
- If you lag behind with your tasks or your colleagues run out of coffee, you get fired. Have fun!

As in real life, there is no end to your internship. Just try to keep it as long as possible …

Background info:
- All assets / audio were made during the game.
- We used Unity3D as the gameengine and had some struggle while trying to sync our project with git (seems like gitignore doesn't like spaces in betweem foldernames or i just dont know what went wrong).

Post-LD Bugfixes/QoL changes:

Inventory
- LetterBundle will now be deleted if empty
- Can't pick up an item twice

GUI
- Added indicators to dirtspots - Added "Jobs" above QuestList - Added a background to the counter to be able to read the counter - MainMenu items are now responsive to screen size - Deathscreen dark overlay also responsive - QuestList now adds, removes and positions items correctly - Added coffee low warning text - Added timer sprite to quests

I loved the art style, but couldn't figure out what my quests were or how to complete them.

It was really fun once I understood the gameplay. A bit more warning on when you're going to get fired would be nice though!

I liked the art a ton, especially the people. Simple, but hard!

Thank you, we had two people who were making those sprites the whole time. All props to them.

Wow this is some of the best art I've seen so far. Very good pixel art and accurate animations. The gameplay also followed the theme so far. According to @rargrave you should have had some kind of interactive tutorial. Otherwise a very good entry!

The item collecting and hand switching seemed odd. I think just the core game of delivering coffee to all employees was pretty decent on its own, especially if you could have incorporated obstacles or setbacks. The graphics are great, and the music definitely sets the right tone! Congrats on your first LD!

I like the concept. Had some problems figuring out how the elevator works (it only works if you've completed some quests first?) and how the item swapping and the delivering of mail worked. Nice graphics and nice music. I liked how it changed to elevator music when in the elevator and (I think) how it changed a bit on the second floor.

@harark Jeah we pretty much wanted to add some hints like "Press e to interact", but that had to fell over, because the time was keeping us busy.

@saibotk Not sure that was the problem (I pressed e on pretty much everything all the time). Not always sure what I was holding in my hand, though, so maybe I was using the wrong objects.

It looks easy... And at the end I was running and very into the game. When you make feel like that, it means that the game is working. Nice game!

I has some problems taking the objects I don't know why.

Well done

I think it has an original idea! I liked the pixel graphics too. But I couldn't understand what was going on, lol. Maybe it could use a little more feedback to the player. But good job nonetheless. :)

It's a fun game. Just one bug though: I got off the elevator while it was moving towards the next floor. That left the elevator on a different floor than me. When I entered the elevator shaft, I fell through the level into the void.

At first, I have to say congratulations for your game's title, as a coffee lover, it would be a shame to not play this game. :p

Then, your art is pretty nice and polished, everything goes well together and every item is clearly recognizable / identifiable, which is important in a game like this. The UI is pretty intuitive / understandable.

The music and sounds are nice, the music giving the "be dynamic" vibe.

I didn't encounter any bug with the web build. I was quickly overwhelmed by the tasks to do, and didn't make it too far after the first things to clean-up, but it was fun.

As for what you said about Unity+Git, using Unity since LD38, we've had our share of problems too.^^ Unity being a bit of a pain sometimes. To be fair, we had a lot more problems with Game Maker Studio + Git. The only times we didn't have much problems with Git was when using Monogame. (other problems appeared anyway ~~)

If it can be of any help, here is the gitignore I use : https://gist.github.com/anonymous/bde4fcafe5a0d32e30df1819b2bc262c I'm pretty sure it can be optimized / improved but it works.

**edit :** I didn't see the part about the space in folder paths, well it could be the culprit. In IT it's advised not to put spaces in your folder names, even in "modern days" it can cause some conflicts or problems. Maybe escaping spaces with backlashes would do the trick?

Great job! :)

Great job with the art, music and overall game. I much prefer to use the arrows keys on these kind of games or at least expect it to be interchangeable with wasd. got some bugs with the famous .exe stopped working and crashing the game twice. Didn't tried for the 3rd time, sorry.
About GIT I agree with @ogma, you should try to avoid using spaces, you could use CamelCase or Lower_Dash for your folders and files. It can save you a lot of problems.
Good job!

Awesome game. The art and animation are nice. The multiple little games built on each other. the progression of difficulty opening up more floors is a great mechanic.

I like the pixel art, simple yet perfect with the game, I wish the movement were with the arrow keys instead

dont worry about the bugs, we all have them in a jams, feel free to fix them when you can ! good luck !
