Controls are a bit floaty, but I suppose it's because you are a Fishman.
Cool game :)
The story aspects worked well too. I wish there was some way to turn back into a human in the water.
Controls are a bit wonky.
Good job overall and good luck.
But what do you mean when you say that the audio should not be in the competition ? @darkmatther took some sounds on the internet but he did a lot of composing and I really like his undersea musics.
Thanks for the feedback @BytingGames @szabe . The controls are indeed floaty. I added too many effects on them during the last day and kind of messed too much with them.
Graphics, audio and mood all fit incredibly well together and the music change when you transformed was hilarious! Overall a very solid game, took me a fair while to get to the mermaid, great job
Feedback:
Things I thought could be improved
- The controls felt a little strange. I found that my character drifted up and to the right without any inputs. I think drifting just upwards would make more sense.
- Lateral control is a little strange too. The character would rotate when I pressed different directions, and it felt like I could only move along the diagonals. If I tried to move straight up or down, I would be pulled along a diagonal.
- I thought the initial dialogue was funny, and I was a little surprised that there wasn't some funny dialogue at the end when you collect all 3 clams. It would have been cool to get some closure to our strange transforming guy's story.
Things I liked
- The undersea music was fantastic. I loved the guitar track in the "middle depths" (It seemed like there were 3 main tracks underwater. One for shallow depths, one for the middle, and one for the deepest parts). I actually ended up hanging around the middle depths area just to listen to the full music track. That's not to take away from the other underwater tracks though. They all were absolutely perfect to set the "deep sea exploration" mood.
- The shortcut system was so organic and well done. I loved that the hammerhead bashed through terrain making the dive back much quicker.
Great job!
I looked for a long time for a little story that would satisfy me. In the end I just had the time to add the opening dialogue and the mermaid, thinking "now that he can dominate his hypersensitivity he can now fall in love without turning into a terrible shark" Happy ending etc ;) It's the easy path but well inspiration is not always here ;)
You are right there are 3 main tracks underwater. Plus the "island / above water" music contrasting with them. It was my first ludum with a musician (@darkmatther ) and he really took the time to work on the mood. Plus when he wants to relax he plays guitar => awesome
I would have liked the dialog in the game to be voice acted, and for me the voice acting do not even had to be a super well made, to good for the game.
The use of music and sound effects is very well done in this game, and it gives the game an very interesting atmosphere.
For me was the ending, the only really bad thing about this game.
Overall is this game one of the absolute best LD41 games I have played, and I have until now played 168 LD41 games.
Well done.
Excellent audio, overall.
Took me several tries to get to the end! It's a pretty frustrating descent. But I did love the shark's ability to destroy obstacles on it's way up. Clever!
I was a bit frustrated every time I had to retrace my "steps", although the assistance from shark mode helped a lot, but this was minor in respect to my overall enjoyment.
The music was excellent and really set the mood of the each section! The transition between underwater tracks was very well done and matched the increasing challenge well.
No spoilers, but I was disappointed with the ending. After the opening dialogue [quacked](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/motherducker) me up so much, I was really hoping for more dialogue at the end.
The controls, while they could use a bit of work, fit the underwater feel very well. I also really liked the level design; it felt very well thought out.
