Turn the Fight by Andreas Roschal

[raw]
made by Andreas Roschal for LD 41 (JAM)

Cover 2.png

This is our first time participating in a Game Jam and also our first time creating a Unity 2D game.

"Turn the Fight" combines the game genres "Turn-Based Game" and "Beat'em Up / Fighting Game".

Gameplay

In this game, two players are fighting each other by alternately performing randomly generated button/key-combos. When combos are successfully performed, the executing player pushes the other one back. Once a player is pushed to the edge of the fighting-platform, the attacking player gets the opportunity to perform a hard (long) finisher-combo. If succeeded, the player wins. Otherwise, the other player can counter with a slightly easier (shorter) combo to turn the tide and get back into the game.

Features

  • The game supports up to two players
  • Keyboard and Gamepad (X Box) inputs can be used
  • You can fight against an NPC (or even let two NPCs fight against each other)

Technical Details

  • The game was made in Unity 2D
  • All sounds and graphics were made by ourselves

What we would have added or changed if there was more time

  • More playable characters and a character-selection screen
  • Multiple stages
  • Difficulty settings for NPC players
  • Special effects (e.g. camera shakes)
  • More animations for attacks (currently only one per character)
  • Background music and UI sounds
  • Rework some sounds in general

That was actually quite a lot of fun! It's very difficult against the CPU, but the AI actually does seem rather natural. The visuals are pretty sweet, too!

Good game, small adjustment and that game can learn to type without looking at the keys :D
Good job!

Amazing game! I only had the chance to play against the CPU, but I'll try play with a friend as soon as can. If I had to add anything to this game is a difficulty setting. But I think this project could easily become a full comercial game with just a little work.
Great work!

I could not for the life of me play without a controller, WASD really messes with me because I don't think of W as W but as "Up". With a controller it was fine though.

I for the life of me couldn't get anywhere in this game. I would get in nearly perfect inputs but the AI still beat me. I think you may need some difficulty levels to get people up to speed on it. Despite that the game is quite solid and looks great.

Didn't expected such funny game after first look at the cover. Fight is amazing...ly hard, but we had a lot of lulz with the team. Great job! :3

Very charming game. I liked the design choices you made with this, like the comeback after your enemy fails their finished combo. Those kinda things show you put a lot of thought into gameplay. I thoroughly enjoyed it, great take on the theme!

This is a clever concept, but I apparently am not aware of which keys are WASD when I am playing games. They are up, down, left and right to me, so I couldn't for the life of my get any attacks that had more than one letter in them off. The arrow keys worked fine for me, though.

The character art is cool, with basic but well executed quick animations. I wish the background wasn't so very grey, though. Good use of different audio tones to separate effects.

I wish I was good enough at this game to play it. 😆

Beauty, especially the close up hand drawn animations. I'm sure you would do better background if you had more time, but that statue, with its muscle detail and facial expression is quite funny. The game itself is inventive and well delivered, however for me it is quite hard to play. I have learned that thinking about ASDW as letters while playing the game can be a mind bending challenge. Good job on finishing the combat system that you intended to make, some of the stuff on the would-do list that you posted are not very realistic for a LD entry. I'm glad you focused on the two character quality and gameplay.

If LD has a rating field for "feel" I'd totally give it a 10 out of 5. Who doesn't love a responsive, fast pace fighting game? The difficulty level is very nicely designed and it keeps me tightly engaged for a very long time. (Actually played for one round before I barely beat the opponent).
I wish there was more visual indication on the keyboard icons though. Perhaps shift the "w" and up arrow key upward to give a visual indication of where the key physically is? I personally find it a bit exhausting to read the icons and translate them into where the keys physically are.
Great work guys!
