Artifact by notpresident35

made by notpresident35 for LD 40 (JAM)

Artifact is a 3D first person alien survival horror game, where you must hunt down four artifacts (a gun and three batteries to power it) and then kill the aliens, without getting caught. However, the player has limited stamina, and everything he picks up weighs him down, making it harder to survive.

Effect of the theme: Each time you pick up an item, you add weight. You start to move slower, run for less time, and eventually cannot run. Also, for each artifact pickup, the aliens find you more easily. Once you pick up all of them, they know exactly where you are, and your only choice is to fight, if you can.

Me playing, for those who cannot play due to lag (Please don't watch if you are going to play, the video spoils the game): https://youtu.be/hsf3LT-rwpA

Controls:

Escape - Pause game. Can return to home screen and quit.

WASD - Move character.

F - Pick up nearby item.

Left Shift - Sprint. Careful though, you have limited stamina

Left click - Turn flashlight on/off. You have limited battery, so conserve it

Right click - Fire blaster. Blaster has no charge, but the artifacts provide ammunition

Unfortunately, I cannot claim credit for most of the beautiful art work in the game. The asset store is my friend, at least until I get a dedicated artist. A detailed list of asset names is in the credits, which are displayed upon victory.

EDIT: Thank you Rybro for taking the time to play my game! Here is his video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH7bhxlr4gI

Also thanks to Pixel Prophecy/Phil Motion Video for playing my game! (My game begins at 45:08, he plays lots of games) https://youtu.be/Hh-8vviv5_g

Looks nice and its great to see a FPS game here.

However, I never encountered any enemies and quickly got lost in the woods with no way of finding civilization.

Reminds me a lot of that old slenderman game. Didn't feel the effect of the theme too much, but nice entry nonetheless!

@JackIsaacs - I should have mentioned this ingame or something, but you have ammo for your gun. The other three artifacts power the gun. You start with no ammo. Sorry this wasn't readily apparent, I now have added it to the description. Thank you for the feedback though, I'm glad it does what it's supposed to! (scare the life out of the player.)

@Evan Overly - I haven't created a reason to wander off into the wilderness, so you should be fine just sticking to the path, unless you get attacked. Also, the aliens do not spawn until you pick up an artifact, and they don't know exactly where you are, only generally, until you pick up the last one, in which case they always know your exact location. However, they always know a general location around you, so you never get into a situation where you can't kill the aliens. Thanks for pointing this out, it is now in the description.

@Darkgrisen - Sorry it lags. It's a pretty laggy game. I'm not sure how to do graphics quality control, and I didn't really have time for that. I'm glad you liked the quality though!

@Arcadia - You're right, it does feel sorta like slenderman, although the relation isn't on purpose. The effect of the theme in this game is that when you pick up more artifacts with more ammo, you slow down and the aliens find you more easily. This is mostly behind the scenes though, so it's not really apparent. Should've said that somewhere. My description is now updated to include this information. Thank you though!

@Kapura - Success! Good to know it does what it's supposed to do.

Good job, environments look pretty creepy, and sound/image is great.
One weird thing - when I picked first artifact and alien killed me, i looked at "Thank you for playing" text and thought that it meens that I have seen entire game.

Player makes really large steps. Because of that it is sometimes difficult to manoeuvre inside buildings. But other than that it is actually a really good game. Really well creates a creepy/horror mood and graphics aren't lagging behind either.

That was creepy. I really like the lighting for the aliens. The first time I picked up an artifact was great. Nice work.

Nice job, got a good jump out of me at. I got lost for a while though not staying on the pass. would benefit from having some barriers I think.

I like the mood! Wish there was a stamina indicator so I could manage my running. Congratulations on the entry!

Well themed. I really like the vibe of the game, running around with a flashlight in the dark is always fun. I did find the head movement while walking a little extreme, and I had some trouble aiming the laser (assuming I was meant to shoot the glowing aliens). The game was a bit laggy, but nothing unplayable. If I had to guess about the lag I would say lighting, but I am willing to give up frames to get the environment of this game. I also really liked the ambient sound of the game world. Great game!

@Almost-Panda-Studio Thank you! I didn't add an indicator on purpose, because it was intended to feel natural, and any status indicators would break it. I also did not include an ammo indicator and a flashlight battery indicator.

@Smilewood Thank you! The game does not have crosshairs or anything, so it is hard to aim, but I was trying to avoid indicators to make it feel more real, and having difficulty aiming adds to the effect of difficulty in killing the aliens, making it scarier.

I'll admit I do kind of hate "Find random shit while monsters chase you" games. But I still reaped some enjoyment from your entry. I relate on your art struggles, I usually end up using some stuff poorly cobbled together in blender and gimp, or just stuff ripped from other games.

@red-fan-games Thank you for the rating, although I can't help you on a personal preference matter. Also, please please PLEASE do not swear! I prefer a safer environment, and swearing doesn't help in the slightest

I like the concept but I sincerely can't deal with the atmosphere. The moment I picked up the gun and got the creepy alien message I was like "NOPE NOPE NOPE" XD I did restart and explore the whole environment, though.

Nailed it on the atmosphere for the time limit. My accuracy with the gun wasn't nearly good enough to make the balance work for me, but the death animation more than made up for it. A+ would get anally probed again.

I actually managed to miss the gun the first run and then got lost in the environment :)
I liked the game, however the movement is a bit hard to control. Inside buildings it seemed like the player would take very large steps, making navigating them a bit hard.
Overal a good game. Keep it up.

There are many entries using "weight as burden" interpretation in this jam. But slowing down player usually make the game depressing. But for horror games, such design is good, though.

@Beanslasher Thank you!! I'm glad you appreciated it!

@Charles-Cox Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately, I used a lot of free art assets from the unity asset store, so I opted out of art to give others a chance.

@Guoboism Yeah, the theme does fit pretty well here. I'm glad you thought so.

@Thijs-tak Lol. This seems to happen, where people miss something, or run off into the wilderness and get lost forever. Maybe I should have gotten rid of the flashlight... Anyway, glad you enjoyed it!

### What i liked more :
Whoa, very frightening game! The titling torch is very effective ! The ennemies as well.

### What can be improved:
The mouvement disturbed me a little : the camera is blurry and the character still walk a bit before stopping.
The gun seems to dont hurt the ennemies (if it does a return would be nice).

- Thanks!

@Louspirit Thank you! As far as the movement, it does need some work for sure, but I ran out of time. I also need to figure out how to remove that camera blur. Now, the gun takes 5 shots to kill. I should have specified. I also need some feedback both for the gun firing and the alien being hit, but (again) I ran out of time. Anyway, glad you enjoyed!

PS: I made the comments completely empty, but I'm not sure how to delete a comment. I don't think it's an option.

Scared me the first time an alien attacked. Got lost in the woods the second time, flashlight glitched out. Start running around randomly because I couldn't really see the aliens coming. Found a house that had some weird glasses or something, not sure what it did. Died before really figuring it out.

@MrPhil Thanks for trying out my game! Sorry that it was confusing and had lots of bugs that I intend to squash in a post jam version. The "glasses" were batteries, but the textures broke, so they look ridiculous. They fill up your flashlight's battery. The flashlight has battery level, so maybe the glitch was you running out of battery. Also, the game is kinda open world and easy to get lost. Maybe I'll try adding a sci-fi compass or something...

Ah! I didn't see a battery level on the flash light and it definitely stopped working eventually.
