A Binding Contract by Kyrio

[raw]
made by Kyrio for LD 44 (JAM)

A Binding Contract tells the story of a poor lad rendered into a detached soul, who now has the ability to steal LIFE from moving objects and use it to bind inanimate items together.

I wrote a postmortem on the making of this entry. Check it out!

This is a prototype which I made solo for the compo, and used a couple of jam hours to finish. This was my first Ludum Dare, and with my limited art skills I struggled to find enough time to both make nice assets and implement my initial ideas. So what you'll play is a nicely wrapped point-and-click scene that should hopefully represent what I wanted to make.

Regardless, I'm excited to share it. As a complete pixel art novice, I made all the assets during the compo and tried to give them a uniform style (thanks to Daniel Linssen for the font!). While there's not much in the way of a game, I successfully bent the free version of Construct 2 to the weird wills of my project, which is something!

I'm attaching the source as well since most assets and systems were made during the compo. The project is a bit messy since I did a few things that C2 isn't really made for. If you do check it out, feel free to ask questions in the comments!

:warning: Bug: You can go back to the menu after playing, but it turns out I'm not resetting some variables properly. This means if you hit "start" again, you won't get a proper new game, so I suggest you hit F5!

even though the game was a prototype, i still enjoyed it. the idea was smart, and the graphics fit the game really well. nice work.

graphics assets were incredibly polished for a jam entry.

Maybe too much! Remember to be in scope, and to give the right weight to every game part

I wanted to play more and with other objects connect, it was really too short!

I had fun, thanks for your work

@matthew-hrehirchuk @memel06 Thanks for the kind words, really! I believe there's a lot of cool things to do with this idea, but as I kept working on the presentation I ran out of time to think about what interactions I'd put in the compo version, let alone implement them. So I'm glad you liked what you did get to play  I'll try to fight my overpolishing habits next time to ship a more complete game.

I'm not sure to entirely get your initial thought for the project. It seems like having a couple of rooms would've helped to better understand the subject :)

Anyway congrats for coming to Ludum Dare and actually challenging skills that are out of your comfort area!

@ekilibr Yeah, that was the plan. I wanted the house to be a tutorial, but that alone turned out to be a lot of work. Thanks for rating the game, and for your advice!

Right now puzzles that you've created are kinda confusing, but I really love the core concept of the game. If you develop this idea into something bigger, this can be a great puzzle game
