Courtyard Madness by X Budsterized X

[raw]
made by X Budsterized X for LD 44 (JAM)

Another game created during a 72 hour GameJam! This time, it is Ludum Dare 44.

We have worked in a team of three programmers on this little game.

What's the game about?

You are an adventurer with a laser gun, who woke up in a courtyard of a medieval castle. There are many evil zombies appearing in the area and your only option is to shoot your way through.

1.PNG

You may also come across various items that will make slaying your enemies much easier for you. However, you will eventually find yourself in need of more items, but you can not longer find any more items around the place.

2.PNG

That's when you resort into your only hope. Using some of your life power to bring a sacrifice to a fountain in the courtyard. This will grant you another item. It is possible to return to the fountain every once in a while for another item, once the water clears out and the fountain expects another sacrifice.

3.PNG

Do not let this fool you. The game starts out slow, but the speed and difficulty increases as time goes on!

4.PNG

What's the end goal?

The goal is to become strong enough to be able to challenge and slay the greatest evil that's hidden in the courtyard. However, once you are done with the challenge, you might find yourself wanting to pursue even further, beat more waves of enemies, collect more items and test the capabilities of the game itself.

There are secrets you might come across in the game. However, will you be able to find the right answers?

Thank you and we hope you have fun playing our game! :)

The sacrifice to the fountain was a good idea. Maybe you should have put more of it ! I died against the dragon.

Nice game with a bit of roguelike feel. Fighting enemies turns a bit repetitive after couple of waves so would love to have some variety earlier.

Nice game, also found the dragon, and got killed by it.

I would suggest maybe kicking the difficulty in a bit earlier, as I never really needed to use the fountain. Still a cool game though; shooting works nice and there is a good variety of powerups and the like to keep up the motivation to explore.

REALLY really cool!! I was quite addicted to it. I really loved the sprites. For feedback, could turn off filtering for the player character, he is blurred in my screen. Other than that, yeah, really cool game. I really enjoyed fighting that [SPOILER] dragon from the cave.

Good work guys! I think the art looked nice overall, though a bit inconsistent / mismatched styles. The sounds were also pretty good but a bit repetitive, I'd say looking into randomizing the pitch of the sound effective a bit per play can really make your sounds that much better and easier to hear over and over again. Overall, good job :)

A really cool little shooter combined with what could be considered idle systems. I think this has great potential to become a full length game!

This game would better belong in the ridiculously overpowered theme. The laser gun is ridiculously overpowered against all enemies. The dragon has a ridiculous amount of health, but can't get past a simple tree, so I kept shooting at it for like 5 minutes.

It feels like someone took a perfectly good medieval fighting game and bolted a laser gun on it, even the inconsistent art style supports this assumption. I'd give it a big dose of humor rating for the gun animation and the ridiculous idea, but that has been opted out of.

The level design on this is great. I had a lot of fun exploring and looking for the secrets!

A couple recommendations: Using Nearest Neighbor image scaling (rather than Bilinear image scaling, for example) when using pixel-art sprites will prevent the pixels from blurring. Also, to improve the enemy path-finding (so they don't get stuck behind walls), check out the A* search algorithm.

Great work!

I'm no good at this type of game, but it was alright. I did like the growling.

You did a great job on the level design, shot and movement of the player making everything fun. The whole game plays smooth! I know that you din't ask for art review, but being an artist as my main role in development, I would sugest you to donwload a unique asset pack with just one art style incluse, this could make your game feels better. The sound is one point!

I really like the visuals and the sound effects. They felt well suited for the type of game this is. The controls were pretty good. I did find it strange that I couldn't fire "downhill" or across gaps (like the stairs). It felt unfair sometimes when the enemies spawned right on top of me. I didn't have enough time to get to safety and avoid taking damage. Overall though, this is pretty solid. Nice work.

I really like the idea here - stave off a demon invasion with laser guns. I wish that there was more to the upgrades instead of just upgrading stats - having different weapon types with different advantages and different graphics would have made this way more fun. I would also have lowered the sfx and added music, but it sounds like you made the sfx yourself, so that's a plus one.

I also found the dragon, but couldn't kill him. Nice job!

I really liked this game, this one had the best controls out of all games alike that I played in this LD. I liked the sounds and art too!
