Shepherd Sacrifice by aCuriosity

[raw]
made by aCuriosity for LD 43 (COMPO)

Edit: re-uploaded with the song looped

Sacrifice sheep to this creature, or kill em... ShepherdsSacrifice Screenshot2.png

Controls: WASD -move Shift -sprint Mouse -aim Left click -shoot Right click -push <---- this is your primary attack Don't forget to smile :p

There is some static in the beginning, didn't have time to re-record.

Forewarning, there is no win or lose condition, just a sandbox of sorts...

Had to somewhat drastically change ideas at 24+ hour mark, but was able to use a bunch of the existing framework i had built.... eeeeeeek!

Fun game! The graphics were really nice, especially the airborne sheep and the giant rotating mouth. Gameplay was entertaining for a bit, but I assume there's no way to win?

Fun silly little game. Feels really good pushing a large group of sheep into the whole. I did find a bug though. I was not able to die. Regardless, with some bug fixes you got a good baseline here.

Cool game! Maybe it could be better with some points or timlimits, but, still, it's really nice:)

Fun for about a minute. Blowing sheep around is fun, but it kind of loses it's luster when I realized it didn't really do much.

@deathray No way to win and no scoring, I had to change ideas on day 2, and it only came together in the last 4 hours... so tried to make it as playable and entertaining as i could in crunch time... its funny the sheep where supposed to do a backflip when thrown in the air, still don't know why they don't...

@somewhatinfinite There is no death condition, not a bug, just a lack of a feature :p

@erendelous I agree... so much could be added with a simple point system, how many sheep pushed into the hole.. bonus for combos... currently the voice lines of the monster guy are what keep track of combos... he will use a different voice line depending on the combo size... I think if I had just even presented the stat of how many sheep had been "sacrificed" it would have provided some incentive to keep playing... but hey, sacrifices need to be made, and unfortunately for me, it was the scoring system that was sacrificed this time around.... :p

@kbf123 I feel you, it gets repetitive, I tried to amp up the entertainment value with the song but in my initial upload i forgot to loop the song and thats like half the fun of the game, at least for me.... its fixed now, song looped....

Though there's not much to do it's still pretty fun as a sandbox, mechanics feel good. And love the song!

@nkrim Thanks for playing, glad you could find the fun in it... when i realized my original idea wasn't going to work, i was scrambling to find something fun from what I had created... I was so tempted to join the jam instead of comp to really flesh out more gameplay... I wanted controller support, but just didn't get to it... I think there is a good base for a multiplayer couch game, i could see a bunch of fun co-op and vs mini games arising from whats here already...

Very nice entry, the song is great! The controls feel good and the graphics are nice. Too bad there's no real goal, but even if I don't like sandboxes, this was fun. Well done!

@sbeif Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for playing... part of me so badly wanted to transition into the jam and not compo, but in that last 4 hour stretch, when all seemed lost, and so much was lacking, i decided to challenge myself for some strange reason... Ive convinced myself that i was doubly true to the theme for sacrificing the endgame to be in the comp :P

I like this! Took me a bit to get the hang of the controls, so the lack of time limit worked for me!
Love the little sheep skeletons.

04. Dec 2018 · 22:31 UTC
@kris-d the shooting mechanic came from my initial idea, when I transitioned over to the new pushing mechanic i took out shooting for a bit, but figured with everything that was lacking in the game might as well put shooting back in there as it felt good, and didn't have any adverse effects on gameplay... i would have liked to add a way to interact with the skeletons, whether you could push them around, or maybe they would crumble under the stampedes of hooves/feet.... but again... sacrifices must be made!

Despite not being win/losable, it still looks nice, the controls feel tight, and I liked how the sheep get a hole in them. The music is also pretty sweet, did you make it?
🎤 aCuriosity
04. Dec 2018 · 23:18 UTC
@dining-philosopher yeah wrote the song in the last 45 minutes.... didn't have time to re-recored the static that sounds eerily like a metronome in the first verse... after i realized shooting the sheep was kind of fun i wanted a little gore, so quickly threw a hole in em... would have like multiple stages(visuals) of damaged sheep, but you know, the compo struggle if real.... Thanks for playing!

Visually very crisp and appealing, and the game mechanics work well. A shame about the rush - this looks like with a little structure it could have been really fun. But I had a good time wandering around harassing my ovine neighbors. Nice job.

I love the song.. this is the most awesome soundtrack i have seen in this jam so far! A++

And the mechanics work very well with pushing the sheep around (it feels responsive and like you are actually pushing things, which i guess is thanks to the programming + animation). I also like your art style, it has a very positive vibe and is drawn very nice!

Would love to see more! And keep making songs!!!

Edit: One thing - maybe include a screenshot or a clip of your song at the main page, i guess it would help to reach more people!

@fzillo So glad you enjoyed the song, this is my second time participating in LD, LD 42 was my first and it was also my first time composing a song for a game, its become one of my favorite parts...

I know what you mean about screenshots, my page is kind of barren... Ill have to throw together a few screenshots... I like keeping the song in the dark though, I think there is a bit of a shock value when people first start it up which makes it a bit more humorous.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ..

Relaxing! I really enjoy it! The controls are well adjusted. I can easily push them together and make the sacrifice together. Great job!

But I still think scores are needed, or let me know how many sheep sacreficed.

Was hard to make out some of the audio. Would have been nice to have some way to win or end the game. It was still fun to shoot lasers and gusts of wind, though.

@dk5000p yeah, didn't quite get around to balancing out the audio... It can be difficult to hear the monsters voice overs upon sacrificing sheep to him, you have to get right up close to him... Thanks for playing!

Flying sheep around and throwing them in the pit is fun for a few minute, but then having a simple counter or even a "sheep sacrified by minutes" would have been a nice improvement !

You should have switched shooting/pushing at the last minute (beacuse pushing is the core mechanic) but damn, this was fun. Song is awesome, herding sheep is awesome (shooting sheep is meh... ditch that bit!). Herding is so satisfying. Scoring? Timers? Meh... random herding is where it's at!

I loved it!

It's fun to mess around! But yeah, it lacks that feeling of danger and the possibility to lose. It's a good idea though

Love the song and the sheep falling in sfx. The camera aim/shoot/deflect abilities all work and feel flawless. I would have loved to see more of a game here, but this is a very fine start!

@gwinnell This was my second LD, and I thought I had a plan going in, I sketched out the game i planned to make, and then proceeded to implement it, only to discover what had seemed so fun in my mind, lacked balance, and thusly fun, recognizing there was not enough time to find the balance, plans changed... 24+ hours lost... in the last several hours of day 2 I switched to just programming my stream of thoughts as they came into mind(my default style, dont know why i tried differently), and so quickly something fun arose from the game...
Thanks for playing, glad you could find some fun in it!

The game is a fun base for something more. The first thing it needs is a win/lose state. It's a cute little idea, I enjoyed it :)

I liked this game, it has a really nice feel to it, also the song set a nice relaxed tone and was quite funny. Good job ! The animations, sound and juice are there, if you add some more challenge to it, it would be a very nice game.

Looooooving the background song, I wish SFX were turned down some so that I could hear it better while playing

Even though there was nothing to do I played for almost ten minutes. It was just fun, and the camera movement was very pleasing. It's also pretty funny when things pile up and you start getting chased by giant balls of sheep.
